Possibly to think on his naivety, but not his idealism. I don't think the show ever painted that as a flaw, just a another perspective to be use wisely or unwisely.

I am sincerely sorry that we never got to see more of Thomas Hamilton both in London and Savannah. I thought it pretty fitting that after debating all of those big ideas he was forced to live out all the injustices of the lives of the people he was making choices for. Wisdom along with that idealism would have made him a powerful character indeed.
