So uhh today I was chastised by my sociology professor when I said that FGM and child marriage are inherently wrong and constitute human rights violations regardless of where/why they’re practiced. He said I “can’t think like that” and that I wasn’t using the sociological perspective of cultural relativism. I’m amazed that I managed to stop myself from screaming, but somehow I did and now my blood’s just been quietly boiling all day instead. so, i was reading dworkin’s pornography, and while everything she wrote was a wonderful commentary on pornography/prostitution/etc, this specific paragraph really stood out to me.

Men of the Right and men of the Left have an undying allegiance to prostitution as such, regardless of their theoretical relationship to marriage. The Left sees the prostitute as the free, public woman of sex, exciting because she flaunts it, because of her brazen availability. The Right sees in the prostitute the power of the bad woman of sex, the male’s use of her being his dirty little secret. The old pornography industry was a right-wing industry: secret money, secret sin, secret sex, secret promiscuity, secret buying and selling of women, secret profit, secret pleasure not only from sex but also from the buying and selling. The new pornography industry is a left-wing industry: promoted especially by the boys of the sixties as simple pleasure, lusty fun, public sex, the whore brought out of the bourgeois (sic) home into the streets for the democratic consumption of all men; her freedom, her free sexuality, is as his whore—and she likes it. It is her political will as well as her sexual will; it is liberation. The dirty little secret of the left-wing pornography industry is not sex but commerce.

it amazes me how we’ve supposedly made tons of progress (and yes, we have made progress, obviously), but this just goes to show how some things have stayed absolutely the same since the time she wrote this. in all honesty, it’s scary.

On tumblr, a site that supposedly doesn’t have porn, will literally keep porn posts as long as the porn is in a reblog instead of the original post.

And yet this post not only has all the images deleted, but all of the reblogs are deleted in the notes and op is deactivated. This post got more of a thorough response than the porn posts that have already been reported to staff. That’s where tumblr staff see the real issue: a singer pointing out that men can get cosmetic surgery before women’s health needs.

(I’m gonna delete the post after a few reblogs/posts on archive links because I’m not trying to get termed but the level of hypocrisy is insane)

unrepentant tiktokers who haven't thought critically since 2019 will hear a criticism of tiktok and be like "how are you gonna hate a whole app 😂😂💯🤡" I do hate tiktok. yes all of it. I don't care about whether the content is good or bad, I hate the fundamental function of that app which is to get you addicted to the zero-effort dopamine hit you get from consuming shortform content algorithmically tailored to you, erode your attention span, and promote consumerism. this is true regardless of whether or not you "found your community" on tiktok or use it as an escape or a coping mechanism. this does not add nuance to the discussion the way you think it does. i do not care and i am not obligated to care and I hope that app one day gets class action lawsuited into oblivion
