There is a point in “Oppenheimer” Christopher Nolan’s treatise on not just the creator of the atom bomb but the confluence of events that led him to his fate as the “Father of the atom bomb”, where you realize Nolan is most definitely not doing a movie about white guilt, or a three hour bit of revisionist history with the hope that we all think kinder of the man. It comes about midway through the movie when one of the great loves of Oppenheimer’s life dies, and Oppenheimer (or “Oppy” as his friends call him) seeks solace to drown himself in guilt. His wife ( a rattlingly fantastic Emily Blunt) finds him off in the woods folded up like a baby in the cold ground of a the land he is in the midst of destroying and immediately runs over to grab him. What one would expect here, what usually follows- a pep talk from the wife who understands his genius, a loving confidence boost from the woman that acts as a kickstand in the mans moments of weakness - is not what's said, instead we get a viscerally livid Emily Blunt all but slapping him before she utters the magic words “You do not get to commit sin and make us feel sorry for you”. It is arguably the thesis of the film, and it was at this exact moment that what had only been hinted at, what felt like it could go either way, became definitive in a movie about a man that was anything but.
...there can be no other conclusion, but that this film is viscerally angry at Oppenheimer, while in recognition, that not only was he not alone, but was not fairly treated, even as he got what he karmically earned. [x]

at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.

Looking for a fun activity to do this week? I recommend sitting your loved ones down and having the uncomfortable but necessary discussion where everyone makes sure everyone knows exactly what life extending measures people would and would not want so that so that in the case anyone is in the hospital needing these extreme interventions in order to keep living, you don’t make a hard situation all the more difficult by having to guess what bad option is the one your loved one would want. I also recommend bowling. If you’re brave enough, these two essential activities can and should be combined

One of the most important survival skills as an adult is internalising the idea that other people being rude or dismissive towards you for no apparent reason, is most often a reflection of their problems (shitty attitude, bad day, work stress, family stress) and usually has nothing to do with you.

There's a difference between:
"I take vitamin c when I have a cold, I know there's not much evidence around it working but it makes me feel better and it's not something that risks making myself or others sicker"
And
"I take vitamin c when I have a cold, maybe you should try it...I hope it helps!"
And
"Why don't you take vitamin c when you're sick? Don't you know that it's proven to work. It always works for me and a friend said it saved her life as she always got colds and now she doesn't. It's this big conspiracy big pharma doesn't want you to know about so they can sell more vaccines and medications. It's even been proven to save people from snake bites that's how powerful it is."

Kentucky had a trigger law. Abortion is now banned with no exceptions made for rape, incest, minors, or fetal anomalies. Kentucky is a poor state, and the rural and Appalachian regions of KY are remarkably so. One of the biggest barriers to care in these areas is transportation–we dont have any sort of real public transportation, and most people do not have cars or reliable access to them. Attempting to get to another state to have an abortion is not feasable for the poor. By enacting such a complete ban in a state where so many residents are quite literally trapped in their current location, you have not only completely stripped females of their right to control their own body and future, but have ensured the worsening of numerous socioeconomic problems in a state already riddled with so many. The state will force pregnancies and then refuse to lift a finger to fix the messes it causes (being things like poverty, homelessness, abused or abandoned children, and drug addiction) or care for the life it forced into being. From the very bottom of my heart, I want every pro-lifer to know that you are unworthy of the air you breathe. I want every politician to know that you are worthy of even less.

One of my passions is adolescent health and reproductive health.
I used to teach sex Ed in schools, but it has become more difficult especially since I now live in a state where abstinence only is key.
Since knowledge is power, I’m going to start sharing more on this blog in attempts to put some good information out there in a space where there is so much misinformation. As always I will not be giving medical advice, only education, anyone with specific questions should see their physician.
