Saotome Aki | Rankane’s kid
My exam was canceled so the brainrot set in. Here’s my old concept art of Ranma’s and Akane’s kid, a tomboy named Aki.

I mean, look at her!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akane in the anime is almost always relegated to a damsel who can't get anything done without Ranma while Akane in the manga actually has agency and can get things done and when she's kidnapped she pretty much saves herself and probably ends up in a situation where she needs to help Ranma out.
She's not just there to be a plot device in the manga, she actually has her own will and agency which is something the anime writers would neglect to try and make Ranma look really badass and cool.
Why sideline our badass female lead just to make Ranma look cool? There are plenty of arcs where Ranma looks cool why do you have to try and take Akane out of the arcs where her agency is in the spotlight????

Daily Reminder: Even love rivals acknowledge that Ranma and Akane are commited to each other
Ryouga specifically used the term 「ふられる」 - being dumped by your lover.
Shinnosuke took Akane “going back” with Ranma as her rejecting him, just like Ranma misinterpreted Akane “staying” with Shinnosuke as a breakup.
Ranma himself used the word 「ふられる」 multiple times and even called her 「うわきもの」 - ‘unfaithful person’.
And I think the last panel is enough to sum up Akane’s thought.

Making someone drag your tired ass to where the drama unfolded and inviting them in your latest scheme? If they aren’t friends then I don’t know what they’re 👏.

Daily reminder: Akane is actually super chill compared to how fanon depicts her.
Beside fanfics, I also blame some, if not many anime eps for flanderizing her 😑.

Rankane | Switch! Now!
A silly crack fic that’s stayed in my draft file since forever. I first intended it to be a fluff piece but my brain had other ideas.

About Akane Tendou

one of the most telling things abt how ranma views akane vs how all her other potential suitors see her is how she’s portrayed in his dreams. everyone else pictures her being affectionate towards them, usually in an apron or overly cutesy outfit, sometimes with long hair…. but ranma just sees her as she actually looks, and these sequences are always about him being the affectionate one, because what’s important to him is akane feeling loved, not what akane can do for him in return
and in reality too- ranma’s too shy to tell her directly that he loves her, but he makes it very clear through his actions that he wants akane to know, and akane also pretty obviously DOES know
can we just take a moment to really think about how in a world where akane tendo was seen as a possession to be won, ranma dreamt of moments where he just wanted to offer akane love and tenderness
just the idea of someone looking at akane and thinking 'she needs tenderness in her life' is something very personal to me ... also the fact that ranma is supposed to be this unromantic guy but whenever he had his delusional daydreams about akane (only), it was always just quiet moments with her in a valley surrounded by fireflies where he tells her they are just like a pair of romantic figures who are always destined to be together .. or simply in a hospital room where she clearly knows he loves her ... even his nonsensical daydreams where he pictures her begging him to stay, it's always with this idea that she knows how much he means to her and he doesn't want her to suffer over him ... and like HE'S SUCH A TEENAGE GIRL I LOVE HIM
but i think the most telling moment (besides all those obvious examples from before) .. is the moment he thinks she died and his reaction to when they remove her clothing from his frozen hands ... when we finally see how ranma really sees akane tendo in his mind .. and it's not extravagant or wildly romantic or her being a 'violent' tomboy ... it's just her turning back to him with a smile and it just breaks your heart because it's such a simple moment that you realize probably means the world to him
Tumblr media
and if that doesn’t tell you how ranma sees akane and what he thinks about her and what she deserves, then i think you missed the whole point of their story

the fact this scene was not included in the anime was so disrespectful to ranma as a character !!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s these little moments where we see the real ranma behind the flash and brash and ego he’s always got on full display. to have ranma seek out shinnosuke and thank him for basically being akane’s hero when they were kids, it’s so monumental. not only does it acknowledge how chaotic akane’s life pre-ranma was but it shows a softer ranma admitting the importance of akane to him.
this story was basically ranma going feral and then depressed at the thought that akane was leaving him for someone else. he’s jealous and rude and depressed and doesn’t understand why she would treat him this way. then at the end, he finally gets it and he takes the time to find his ‘rival’ and we get this small scene which is so fundamental to the core of ranma’s character. underneath the martial arts prodigy and goofy idiot, he’s kind and respectful and understands there are more important things than being the best .. especially when it comes to akane’s life.
akane means a lot to ranma and this really illustrates that. she is alive because shinnosuke saved her when they were kids. ranma’s literally thanking him for setting akane on her path to meeting him.
it’s just so wild to me this was cut out because it showcases how tender and grateful ranma is to have akane in his life. and it also sets up the final scene where he walks with her, holding hands, so much better … because you truly get that for ranma, everything is better with her, even if he can’t say it outloud just yet.

This is why I love her so much. Best thing I’ve read today and it’s nearly midnight here 👏
can we just take a moment to talk about akane tendo ...
Tumblr media
loud, brash, angry, 'violent', tomboy, kind, funny, goofy, loving .. akane was literally such a well-rounded character that even though the manga was called ranma 1/2, the story was truly about both ranma and akane.
her character arc takes her from dealing with her femininity to accepting her own version of what a girl can be. we see her being constantly attacked because of it (literally attacked by a horde of boys wanting to 'date' her) or criticized for her 'lack' of it (by her own family for being passionate about martial arts). then as her story continues, it leads to her accepting who she really is and not caring what others called her (except ranma and that's just because he loves annoying/flirting with her and it adds to the loony toons aspect of the story).
we see her recognizing this change from within at the beginning when her hair was cut during a battle right after having a brief, intense moment with ranma in female form. besides akane starting to realize she was attracted to both forms of ranma (bisexual queen akane tendo forever! .. and yes, she does deny it at first but she's the only one who never truly pressures ranma into finding a cure, she likes ranma just the way he is!!), we get to see a teenage girl feel sadness and grief and anger over losing a part of herself she tried so hard to become.
she was desperate to be this picture of womanhood (long hair, quiet, docile) because she was constantly reminded how she was nothing like a 'normal girl'. and in one fell swoop, she loses the one thing she tried so hard to change about herself and yet, she never blamed ranma or ryoga over it. she might have slapped them at the moment but afterwards, she cried in the arms of an unrequited crush she knew could never happen and finally let go of that aspect of herself. she took her sadness, she expressed it and then she moved on and said 'it's okay now'. DO YOU KNOW HOW AMAZING THAT WAS?? DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW WONDERFUL IT WAS TO SEE A TEENAGE GIRL EXPRESS HER EMOTIONS AND SAY CRYING IS GOOD?? TO SAY IT'S OKAY BECAUSE IT'S TIME TO REALLY BE ME???
akane tendo's story truly begins from there because she DOES become the loud tomboy martial artist who expresses her anger, jumps to conclusions, is irrational, just lets herself FEEL without really overthinking if this is 'ladylike'; and it's the best parallel to ranma's journey of discovering his 'curse' isn't really a curse at all. ranma and akane are both saddled with these gender roles/norms from everyone (family, friends, rivals, wannabe lovers) and are told if they are not JUST LIKE THIS ('man amongst men'/'quiet, demure'), then they are not whole. but throughout the whole manga, their story was how that was not true at all ... how in starting to accept themselves and each other, they became exactly who they were meant to be.
ranma, at the end, chooses love over a cure. akane, throughout the story, continues to choose herself. by accepting everything they said about her, akane expressed her anger and then let it go and continued being herself. she was the tomboy, she was 'uncute', she was silly and prone to violence, and she was also kind and helpful and a friend to someone who desperately needed one. and to not acknowledge her friendship with ranma and how it truly changed both of them for the better, is to completely miss the whole point of the manga, of the story of ranma 1/2.
yes, it's a silly manga with curses and gags and goofiness galore but it was also just a story about two teenagers who were told over and over again they needed to be MORE to be accepted. but when they meet, they cling to each other and fight with each other and care about each other and always choose each other because they know .. they know they finally found someone who understands. the reason ranma's character is so funny and goofy and egotistical and kind and caring was because it was so intertwined with akane's. she was the one who always kept him in line, he constantly wanted to hang out with her and asks for her opinion, he learned how to apologize so he could apologize to her when he hurt her feelings ... he goes from thinking winning is the only thing that matters, to giving it all up if it meant losing her. akane was the reason he becomes an even better fighter and she was also the reason why he realizes his 'curse' is no longer a negative factor in his life (because she will always accept ranma). and ranma made akane realize she can be silly and goofy and not 'the ideal of femininity' and still be considered fun and important and worthy of love. being herself was all ranma wanted her to be and it made her shine even brighter because she was accepted for being herself.
akane was a major influence on myself because she opened my eyes to teenage girls being angry, to being bisexual, to being goofy and silly and absolutely imperfect. SHE WAS NOT PERFECT AT ALL!! and she was still the hero of the story .. she was still the love interest .. she was still the girl who accepted the parts others said were unfeminine and said 'so what if i'm not cute' and was unabashedly herself. being a girl meant being yourself and whatever that means to you.
akane tendo, you will always be famous to me because you showed me that gender norms/roles mean nothing when being yourself, being kind, and being goofy was way more fun.
