Ok but the question of why do some celebs get away with this or worse? Because the man was a Wife Guy! He'd been on TV with his sons. Heck, he was in commercials WITH his wife up until this erupted. The drugs are one thing, but not THE thing I've heard people talking about. When your entire image is that of a sweet family man and suddenly the media's saying you frequent the most exclusive room salons in Korea... I cannot imagine the mental toll of the whole country talking about that.
It's still hard to fathom how taking your life negates whatever shame you supposedly incurred, but the media cycle is always like this in Korea. Air every dirty allegation, people talk shit about you, and then when someone does the unthinkable, charges and investigations are dropped and now everyone's saying, "How could this have happened, what a shame." As if this is the correct way to clean up after having been discourteous enough to make a mess. All your peers who distanced themselves line up now to pay tribute, and how many of THEM use drugs? How many go to room salons? That kind of thing is an open secret most of the time.
We need to stop both sides of the gossip/media cycle, the demeaning of every mistake AND the glamorizing of this kind of tragic choice. Was Lee Sun Kyun a terrible person or a saint? Neither, probably! Those kids would be better served having their flawed father help them make sense of this as they grow up than having people eulogize a version of him that we all pretend was perfect.
South Korea's Role in Lee Sun-kyun's Death
“I keep thinking about his wife and children. They will continue to pay the price of not only what he was allegedly doing, but also how he died. So much pain and sorrow. And for what? What is the lesson? Don't do anything to bring shame to ‘us’"? — Joy Lieberthal Rho, LCSW

This... was not about marijuana at all. The conversation has been about wealth, sex work, designer drugs, and double standards based on gender. These are issues that very much need to be discussed, which makes it doubly unfortunate (and predictable) that it all ends up getting reduced to celebrity gossip, with tragic results.
RIP to Lee Sun Kyun, and may the media grant his wife some peace.
The way Korea vilifies people for something as harmless as fucking marijuana that then leads to destroying their careers and their lives needs to stop. You deserved so much more Lee Sun Kyun

You know what else feels deeply relatable and in character about this fight? "I like this guy, I'm gonna take things slow and- Oh shit, I slept with him immediately. Goodbye forever, I'm going to be a fisherman or walk into the ocean or whatever."

an underrated kink is corruption. i want to make you worse. i love to coax it all out of you and make you admit how hot you really think it is. don’t worry, no one’s going to find out. no one’s going to judge you. it’s okay, you don’t have to fight it anymore. just let it get to you. you need this.
