ash’s jeju house

ash hadn’t been specifically seeking out a house in jeju. he’d been looking for a place he could stay to get away anywhere more secluded than seoul. his search did have to be limited within korea, as leaving the country would be bad optics for him and the company. at first, he was looking at a little bit of everything: airbnbs, guesthouses, places to rent, and places to buy. he stumbled upon this place by chance and upon visiting it, fell in love and decided it was the right place.

ash is renting the placet, a decision he came to against all financial advice he’s ever been given (since he could have afforded to buy it) because it’s harder for sasaengs to track him down that way since his name is less formally attached to it. he’s willing to throw a few million won out the window with no return every month in exchange for more privacy after everything he went through leading up to his hiatus. the owner mentioned potentially planning to sell it fully in a couple of years when they retire and had offered the option to ash expressly as a potential earlier sell, so it’s an unspoken option on the table for ash to buy it then, but that’s not something ash was considering when he lived in it. he’s considered it since because he grew attached to the house, but has yet to buy it officially.

the house is located in the south of jeju, in one of the more secluded parts of the broader area outside of the seogwipo. it’s a two-story one bedroom house with a private garden/orchard area on ground level and a terrace off of the bedroom. there’s also an office area on the second floor that he eventually made his makeshift studio.

the studio isn’t as extensive as the one he has at home in seoul since he didn’t anticipate using it as much, but he made it as productive as he could while he was there since ideas started coming to him at the end.

the house is a short walk from a beach front and the garden houses a variety of flowers as well as a mini tangerine orchard. the tangerines technically belong to the house’s owner, but they gave ash permission to pick them for personal use when they’re in season if he wants/

upon moving in, ash discovered a number of stray cats live in the area and set up a portion of the yard where he leaves food for them.

blacklight comeback interview

a series of questions answered by titan’s taeyong at the press showcase for his blacklight comeback.

how would you describe this release?

“blacklight is an album that’s hard to describe concisely. all of my albums are about feelings and experiences, that’s what i always focus on as a writer, but if the ret of my albums were more... outward, looking at other people, blacklight is more of an inner reflection.”

what is your favorite part about this release?

“how involved i got to be in it. blacklight, for the most part, is exactly what i wanted the album to be and look like and how i wanted it to be presented. there are things i might have done a little differently in a perfect world, but budget and normative constraints are hard to avoid entirely.”

what were preparations for this release like?

“i didn’t know i was writing a new album when i first started working on blacklight, so the actual preparations for the release, knowing it was going to be released and how, started a lot later than the work started. at the beginning, the process was hard. there was a time last year when i couldn’t write at all. it wasn’t even that i couldn’t write songs i liked. i couldn’t do it at all. there was nothing in me. during that time, i wasn’t thinking about an album, but i found my way back eventually and worked on getting back into music again. that time when i was getting back into writing was when the idea of the album started to come to me, so i pitched everything i had in mind to the company a little while after that.”

what do you hope to achieve through this release?

“rather than charts or wins, i wanted to focus on delivering an album that was personal and spoke to a specific experience. i wanted to release it and feel like i’d been more honest than ever. whatever happens now that it’s out, i’m happy.”

what is your favorite song on the album?

“writing for this album was such an emotional experience that i can’t pick one and call it my favorite. it would feel wrong. every song is like a piece of me, so they all play an important role.”

what is the most memorable lyric from this single/album for you?

“i wrote all the lyrics except for what minjung wrote in no blueberries so this feels a little... [laughs]. but... oh, maybe in the song ‘welcome to the show’, where i say, ‘so turn down the lights, they'll see you now’. that line sums up the album, i think. it’s the feeling of stepping out of the spotlight and having to live with yourself when people can see the real you.”

what inspired you creatively for this album?

“my experiences, the things i’ve been through. fame, social media, insomnia, anxiety, stress, the lows and the highs — my own internal world, really, and the unique mix of influences on it. obviously, that affects anything i write and create, but this time, i came at it from the perspective of more of a mirror inward instead of everything just filtering through that.”

the music videos for the album seem to be connected. is there a story there?

“there is. mostly, it’s the story of different characters who make up parts of me. i don’t want to give it all away, though. there are a lot of easter eggs throughout. i worked closely with the directors to tell them what i wanted to show, and how i envisioned it, and what the meaning was, so a lot of the easter eggs are really personal and i don’t know that i’ll ever talk about them directly. but as for the story? i’ll say that blacklight may only be the first pages of that. ”

Taeyong has made his solo comeback with the release of his fifth full-length album Blacklight and the music video for its promoted single “Instagram”.

Taeyong last promoted as a soloist over a year ago with the release of his fourth album Lovesick in 2020. Last year, he released a handful of Portal singles, including three that are included in the track list of Blacklight. Last week, the album’s pre-release “Paranoia” was released, following up on the dark visuals of “So Beautiful”, “Nerves”, and “Scaredy Cat” released previously. “Instagram”, the promoted single off of Blacklight, meanwhile, strips back the instrumental and visuals for an ode to modern loneliness in social media.

Taeyong will be promoting “Instagram” for a week. His comeback stage will be held later this week.

Platinum has made their comeback after nine months with the release of their new mini-album EXIT: E and the music videos for their dual title tracks “Baby Baby” and ”Sentimental”!

Platinum’s last comeback was with “Remember That” last April and their title tracks off of EXIT: E hold a similar sentimentality, but with a more palpable loneliness. The five-track album includes one additional full-group song, “Immature”, and a solo track from the group’s lead vocal, “I’m Young”, and a duet track between the lead vocal and main rapper, “Pricked”.

The music video for “Sentimental” sees the members bored, lonely, and sentimental in isolated rooms and then coming together in a garage band-style setting, while the “Baby Baby” music video captures the feeling of night loneliness. An additional music video for the solo track “I’m Young” was also released.

Platinum will give their first comeback performance will be held later this week.

instagram is a song about feelings that are hard to describe. we have a lot of times like that, no?

to be honest, this album didn’t come to me easily. in the end, i couldn’t be anything but honest.

i once thought i wanted to make music to comfort people. this time, this isn’t a song or album that provide comfort or a solution to your problems, but i hope they can be beside you when what you need is to hear someone say “i’m having a rough time, too”.

“paranoia” (january 23, 2022)

“paranoia” is the pre-release single off of ash’s upcoming fifth solo album blacklight. though he’s previously released three other singles off of the album, “paranoia” is the official pre-album single release and the first song released off of the album that is in korean. “paranoia” continues the visual darkness of the preceding music videos, this time ramping up the horror elements. the lyrics of the song were based on the paranoia largely caused by fame and mental illness that he’s previously addressed in songs such as “noid” and “scaredy cat”. interestingly, “paranoia” is also his first choreography-intensive release since “noid” (and earned him his first choreography credit).
