It all started when Jon asked you to be on On The Spot; the infamous Rooster Teeth game show. You’d agreed only after he promised that Cow Chop wouldn’t be there, and the Golden Gus would be staying in tact.
So you agreed, thought he wouldn’t tell you who he had secured to be your teammate. He only said you’d “find out” in an ominous way.
The minute you stepped onto the stage, you saw Lynn Marquis. A hand flew to your mouth as he gave you one of those cute smiles and a wave.
“Jon, are you kidding me?”
The one who’d introduced you to Lynn through a ridiculous game night involving you three, Cole, and a few other friends. And he was very, very aware of what you thought was your very, very hidden crush on the other Marquis. But apparently nothing got past Risinger.
The host was laughing from his desk and you sighed, sinking into the chair beside him. You and Lynn had become very teasing with each other, baiting each other like kids.
“This is going to be fun, don’t worry.” Jon added before Broadcast sent the call out that they were going live. You prayed that Jon didn’t completely embarrass you, though it was unlikely he wouldn’t.

“The game is Come Again.”
You two were losing to Chris and Aaron, who had dubbed themselves Team Plaid 2.0, and this was your final chance to get ahead.
“Team Twitch.tv/JonRisinger”, you two are up. Let’s see their prompt!“ The prompt appeared and Jon read it aloud. "Lynn and (Y/N) are bank robbers, driving away with the loot from their latest crime. However, (Y/N) decides this is the perfect time to express their feelings for Lynn, who’s completely clueless.”
You watched the smirk grace Jon’s face and you gave him the most unamused face you could muster.
“Alright, if you two would stand in the spot and please act this out; you have sixty seconds. Listen for the bell. And go!”
You and Lynn were standing now, and you positioned your hands to make it look like you were driving.
“So glad we got out of that bank in time.” Lynn started.
“It’s pretty great. The way your eyes sparkled under your ski mask was enchanting–”
Ding!
“The way your hands opened the safe—”
Ding!
“Your ass looked awesome in those pants.”
Laughter erupted from the audience, Jon, and the other two.
“Why thank you. I try to get very form fitting pants.”
“Well, you did a great job—”
Ding!
“Does that hurt your–”
Ding!
“Look, there’s something I need to say.”
“Okay,” Lynn looked at you. “Go ahead.”
“I just gotta say I like—”

“You’ve got a really nice—”

“So sometimes I feel like I wanna make out with you!…Is that a friend thing to do?”
The buzzer sounded, ending the game, and you felt frozen. You somehow made it to your chair, unaware of the words passing between Jon and the three men.
At least, you had until the Golden Gus was being pressed into your hands.
“We did it, (Y/N)!” Lynn was grinning now.
You realized the credits were rolling now, and you tried to smile and hold up your prize. Lynn nudged you so you turned to face him, and he was smiling again.
“And to answer that question, it’s definitely a friend thing to do. Especially if your friend likes you back.” And that’s when Lynn Marquis tilted your chin enough to plant one on you.
“Finally!” You heard Jon and Aaron chorus in the background.

(inspired by the limited edition shirt they sold for Extra Life!)
“You want me to do WHAT?” You practically shouted this as you stood outside Stage 5, modeling the new Cheese Master shirt the company had designed in preparation for the upcoming Extra Life stream.
“Lift your shirt a little and let me draw a hand print in sharpie.” Jon’s request wasn’t crazy, but it was the fact that he wanted you to lift your shirt in broad daylight in front of multiple people, armed with cameras.
With a sigh, you pulled the shirt up enough to expose your stomach, Jon crouching in front of you, the sharpie tickling your skin. You were giggling a little now.
“Stooop. Your giggles make your stomach clench and I’m gonna fuck up tracing my hand—(Y/N), you’re gonna have a fucked up hand inked on your skin, I swear to god.”
You had to really suppress the giggles now, especially with one of the guys filming this-no doubt for an RT life-right next to you.
After a minute and a half of drawing, Jon moved back and you looked down at his handiwork-the slightly crooked looking hand to match shirt Gus’.
You laughed, adjusting the shirt so Gus and his hand could be seen with yours, and you heard the click of Jon’s camera.
“I told you the hand would be fucked up. But it suits you.”
And you dissolved into laughter again.

You were a little drunk, but then again, who wasn’t? The Rooster Teeth Christmas party was in full swing; ugly Christmas sweaters and spiked egg nog as far as the eye could see.
You were standing in the doorway, making another drunken attempt to hang the fallen mistletoe, giggling to yourself. Meanwhile, Miles was practically leading a tipsy Cole in your direction.
“Go help, Cole. You’re all limbs anyway.” He teased.
After failing again, you spun around, determined to return to the party, until you bumped into Cole, your forehead hitting his chest.
“Cole, hey.” Your voice was a little slurred, and the taller young man grinned at you. “You, uh, need help?” He gestured at the doorway, and you practically shoved the mistletoe into his giant hands. “Yesss, we gotta hang this up.”
With ease, Cole managed to place the mistletoe where it belonged, and you smiled, staring at it. Until Miles swooped in again, walking by. “Look at you two, caught under the mistletoe~” He waggled his eyebrows and disappeared from your vision, though he was probably now watching with bated breath, expecting you two to kiss at any moment.
Without hesitation, you grabbed Cole’s collar and pulled him close, your lips barely touching.
“Merry Christmas, Beanpole Boy.” You whispered, before closing the space with a kiss.

Um…does this thing work? You scribble onto the back of your hand quickly, before you lose your nerve. You’d noticed an exchange of marks before, gaining strange bruises and odd paint splotches so you thought, why couldn’t you talk back and forth?
You’d gone just about crazy trying trying to find out who your soulmate was - but it was kind of hard when there wasn’t any obvious identifications following the marks you received. You glance down at your hand and gasp.

“Do you mind showing me your tattoos? I’m interested in getting some myself and those look cool!” You grin at him as he turns around, though he ducks his head and pulls absentmindedly at his bun.
“Ah, they’re not tattoos, I was, uh, writing on myself?” He says it questioningly, as if he’s not sure himself. You stare at the man for a long moment before you tilt your head.
“Jon?” You ask.
“Y/N?” He asks back. When you nod excitedly, Jon breaks out into a grin then almost immediately frowns down at you.
“Where’s all your marker leftovers?” He asks, pouting. You laugh lightly.
“I used eyeliner.”
“Eyeliner!” Jon laughs, smacking himself in the head a little. “That’s brilliant!”

Novels don’t have Author’s Notes
I think one of the problems which fanfiction authors face is the fact we are one of you. We are a fan. We love the work. We recognise the faults. We want to be a part of the community and contribute.
Because of this, however, there’s this mentality that fanfiction authors, who do everything without getting paid and often without recognition, owe it to people to write things the way they want it to be written.
Don’t like something in a novel? Put it down. Walk away. That’s it. That’s the end. (I mean, unless the novel turned into a craze and then it’s okay because you’re supposed to hate things that are popular, right?)
Don’t like something in a fanfiction? Let’s tell the author. In detail. Let’s be condescending about it. Let’s insult them at the same time. After all, they owe us for reading.
Not updating fast enough? Complain. Updating too fast? Complain. Don’t get the exact right details? Complain. Omg, there’s sex/death/murder and I wasn’t warned? Doesn’t matter that fanfiction gets far more warning than most. Complain anyway. Don’t want to wait until the chapter’s released which explains it all? Complain. Omg, these two characters are underage, they shouldn’t even be kissing let alone having adult conversations about sex. Complain. Loudly. Call the author a paedophile.
Pick up any novel off the shelf and there’s nothing in terms of who the author is and what work they put into the story. You pick it up, you read. There’s no notes in the middle to explain something that people might not get. There’s no notes saying “Hey, this might not be historically/culturally accurate.” There’s no warnings. It’s fiction. People get that things may not be the same in the real world. Yes, a story is expected to be at least believably accurate but it doesn’t have to be.
People don’t seem to understand personal preference vs facts and interpretation vs critique.
By all means, critique a work. People like to know if they’re getting grammar wrong, or overusing words, or breaking rules. People need to know hear “hey, PTSD isn’t quite what you think, would you like to discuss it?” or “That gunshot wound isn’t realistic, I can help”. But please understand, people who write fanfiction do so for the love of the work. A lot aren’t professional and they shouldn’t be expected to be. Do we want to improve? Yes, absolutely we do. Offering guidance and gently nudging is so much better than; “You got this wrong. You’re terrible. I don’t like it. Die in a fire.”
You wouldn’t say that to a published author. Why say to a fanfiction one?
We are far more approachable than the average published author and a lot more fragile. We don’t have publishers and editors backing up our work. We’re unproven and our egos are often not strong. Authors are given the benefit of doubt until the book is finished. Why can’t fanfiction authors be given the same benefit?

It was another late night when a beaten half to death Michael Jones showed up at your apartment door, something that had become a known habit in the time you two started dating: he fought, he came back to your place, and you patched him up, good as new.
“You have to stop coming back like this. I worry,” you murmured as you cleaned his face and hands, bandaging and wrapping every cut and scrape you found, making sure nothing would become infected.
“I swear it won’t happen again.” Michael said this every single time, and that promise, that swear, was broken every single time, but you didn’t mind all too much: simply because you were always the first one to make sure he was okay, and he was always giving you a brave face when he recounted his battles.

HOW DID I EVER MISS THIS OMG ily Bex
When you had told Jon you were cold and he had told you to get a sweater from his drawer, you’re shocked to find a particular red-and-yellow garment, which you pull out to reveal a Gryffindor Quidditch sweater and ask, “Hey, Jon, what’s a Slytherin like you got a Gryffindor sweater for - is there someone else I should know about?” you add an exaggerated tone to the last part.
Jon rushes in to the room, mumbling curse words under his breath to lean against his doorframe in an attempt to appear casual, “I, uh, I saw that in the store and it reminded me of you…I was going to give it to you later on but I couldn’t find the right time, and then I guess I’m not good at hiding stuff,” he laughs.
You tug it over your head and wrap your arms around, hugging the sweater and Jon smiles, walking over to kiss the top of your head, “I felt dirty buying that with my own two hands, but it’s worth it for you.”
