P. 1 (sorry this is long, feel free to ignore it if you're not interested) : I often find that people seem to lack nunace when it comes to sade. Personally I think it could be argued that in some ways and in some instances he was quite modern (for lack of a better term) I.e. His view of homosexuality being normal, him mentioning female pleasure in PitB (was very surprised at that the first time I read it), his opposition to the death penalty, as self-serving as it may have been.

Yeah, Sade is a very fascinating person, and I definitely think he should continue to be researched academically and portrayed in fiction. I just find him a very relevant personality in terms of a childish, powerful, abusive man in a corrupt society archetype. Then taking into account the other complexities you mentioned in the first part of the ask, you get a very interesting character and/or study subject.

I just think there’s really a lack of nuance in a lot of people’s perceptions now, idk why. But I think most people would agree with that statement. The contradictions in Sade are fun to explore. PitB is a great example, at the start of a paragraph he’ll defend homosexuality, by the end of the paragraph, he’s defending rape. Which raises the question if anything he says has value, or if he was just throwing darts randomly and some happened to land on things that make sense. Interesting stuff.
