Genderfluid Mastermind
“Observe her scales. Every other RainWing we’ve picked up turned instantly green — the color that seems to indicate fear. But this one — I don’t know what it indicates, but I’m seeing shades of red and orange, perhaps a little black here and here.” The NightWing used a thin stick to point to spots on Glory’s wings with clinical detachment. She could have been describing a moderately interesting beetle for all the emotion in her voice.

[Image ID: Sketches of an original character, numbered from 11 to 20. He is a Nightwing, a kind of dragon from the Wings of Fire series. Each sketch depicts him posed differently. In the 11th sketch, he is standing and holding some scrolls with his foreleg while looking disconcerted. In the 12th, he is standing and holding some scrolls with his wing while looking happier. In the 13th, he is laying on his back with his legs in the air. In the 14th, he is walking. In the 15th, he is sitting and looking at an Icewing, and the two of them are tied together by some sort of force. In the 16th, he is sitting with all his limbs held close together and his tail wrapped around them. In the 17th, he is eating cheese. In the 18th, he is sitting facing the camera. In the 19th, he is eating an apple. In the 20th, he is depicted flying from above. /.End ID]
More random sketches.
Hey open question: is putting the image descriptions in plain text like this a good thing? I started doing this because when someone asked me for an image description I didn't really know what that meant, and in the tutorial I found by googling it, it said it was better not to use alt text. But it seems like most people actually do use the alt text for this? Is there a consensus on what's better?
Part [1] [2]
11-12. More "carrying things" stances. Holding stuff with your wings just makes more sense to me.
14. Referenced a dog walking for this and I think it ended up coming out a bit weird because of that.
15. The Icewing is a friend with whom I was playing the third Legend of Spyro game at the time. In that game, Spyro and Cynder are stuck together by a cursed snake necklace thing. I'm not sure I did a very good job drawing him but he seemed ok with it. One of my other friends told me "It looks like you are about to get thagomised", which was NOT my intention. Oh well. That game is not good at all btw, I can't really recommend it to anyone. It's too bad it's a terrible game, because I do like it. Just like, for the concept I guess, and the thought of what it could have been. But the execution is a total disaster.
16. This was supposed to be "getting pushed somewhere unwillingly", but I think it ended up being more "sitting right on the edge of a cliff".
17-19. Bob Ross grant me absolution for I am NOT experiencing the joy of painting right now.

wow i love your jma designs!!! your art style is very pleasing, i love how you diversify the dragons while keeping them recognizable and readable as the same species :]
Thank you. This compliment means a lot to me because "keeping them recognizable and readable as the same species" was the exact result I was hoping for. The ideal outcome would be to have a bunch of dragons that look true to their descriptions/depictions in the official media, while you would still be able to pick them out of a crowd.
This project started because my partner @flamebringer0 once joked that a lot of characters I like or otherwise reference often happen to be green Seawings. So I wanted to figure out a way for them to all look distinct from each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It'll be a long road until then, but perhaps one day I will have drawn every dragon in the series. Or I will have lost my mind, whatever happens first.

IceWing tribe sheet!
Tumblr media
icewings actually happen to be my favorite tribe, they're a little messed up but i love them. enjoy my headcanons!
Physical Appearance + Traits:
-IceWings live in the cold and barren arctic north, and have developed very specific adaptations in order to survive. Rather than being warm-blooded and keeping themselves insulated, they kept their reptillian cold blood and slowly adapted to a consistently cold internal body temperature. As a result, they require no warmth at all for their bodies to function; they do not insulate themselves with fur or fat like mammals do.
-Their scales are pale, usually with a bluish tint although other colors are not unheard of. When well taken care of, they gleam and sparkle like ice.
-They are naturally cold to the touch, giving off a chill to anyone close by. In warm environments, especially humid ones, the cold will sometimes cause moisture from the air to condense on their scales, letting drops of water settle on them and drip from them. This, at first glance, can sometimes look like they’re “melting”, and has made some believe that IceWings are literally made from ice, and they can melt in the heat. (This is another headcanon that didn’t originate with me, it comes from @flamebringer0. If you see this, I adore your headcanon, I hope you don’t mind me including it among with mine!)
-Sharp spikes bristle their necks and run along their spines and tails. This can make it difficult for other tribes to gain the upper hand in fights without being wounded by the spines. They can also use their tail as an effective weapon.
-They can summon a storm of tiny shards and crystals from the ice that tends to coat their throat and produce frostbreath, which can quickly deliver frostbite to any dragons who aren’t well adapted to cold.
-Icewing horns are sometimes straight, resembling icicles, sometimes jagged, and sometimes branch off into something more antler-adjacent. They are always sharp, but just slightly more fragile than other horns.
-Some IceWing scales tend to get a bit darker and more silvery as they age, and likewise they tend to hatch with bright, snowy-white coloration. Some will have speckled patterns and general variability between colors across their bodies.
-Their dark eyes help absorb light and allow them to see past the bright glare of sun on ice.
-Their bodies are long, slender and elegant, especially among royals. Their faces are long and pointed, and they are more agile and maneuverable than most tribes expect. They are generally smaller than SkyWings but taller than MudWings.
-Their serrated claws help grip ice, and make their attacks more punishing. They have a sharp and sturdy point on the end of their snout, which can be used to crack ice without harming them.
-They are not a very physically varied tribe, but the royal and noble IceWings have a look distinct from those on outskirt villages. They often have fewer spines, straighter horns, narrower wings and paler colors, whereas lower-ranking IceWings have more practical antler-like horns, more spines, and a more muscular appearance. (Sketch displaying this below.)
Tumblr media
Life Cycle:
-IceWings are hatched in small clutches of one to three. Parents will carve out a nest in the ice, lay the eggs, and then allow them to freeze over again until the dragonets break through the ice. It is believed that the colder the eggs during incubation, the more powerful the dragonets will become.
-They take around 5 months to develop and are hatched strong enough to free themselves and big enough that most predators aren’t interested in them. They are also hatched with a delicate layer of spines all across their bodies that resemble frost crystals, though these later shed off. Dragonets can also go several days without eating after hatching, which is unusual for dragons.
-Most parents are available to watch their dragonets, so these abilities simply serve as precautions for the case of missing or neglectful parents.
-They grow somewhat slowly, reaching maturity a bit later than other tribes.
-IceWings, especially those of high rank, are expected to be strictly monogamous, and their marriages are usually more of a formality than a real union of affection. They aren’t incapable of love, certainly, but marriage is not treated as an act of love among nobles and royalty. Sometimes even lower-status IceWings marry out of societal expectation and not for their own happiness, but things are generally less strict.
Society + Culture:
-IceWing society is strictly ranked by class and birthright. There are seven divisions, referred to as Circles; the Seventh Circle is made up of dragons of low status, living in small villages on the outskirts of the tribe and scorned by those in higher Circles. The First Circle, meanwhile, is almost entirely comprised of royalty and other dragons of high honor and status. In the palace, dragons are expected to greet and interact with others differently depending on their relative ranking. The system is extremely strict and ruthless, and disrespect is one quick way to be lowered down the ladder. During her reign, Queen Snowfall tore down the wall used to keep track of the placement of each dragon, and made great steps toward lessening this aspect of their culture, but it continued to subtly persist long after her death.
-Lower-circle IceWing society is simple and straightforward. They live in communities quite detached from palace life, hunting for themselves and helping each other raise their dragonets. As all IceWing animus dragons were strategically kept in royalty, most animus gifts did little to improve the lives of those outside the First and Second Circles. The best way for a low-born IceWing to rise in rank would be through military work; otherwise, the groups remain fairly stagnant. Protests and revolts, though, are surprisingly uncommon. Most Sixth and Seventh Circle IceWings are simply too detached from royalty to be concerned with wealth differences, and royals likewise rarely bother to interfere with Sixth and Seventh circle dragons.
-While in the palace, during the worst of the class division, all dragons were commanded to wear necklaces made from a heavy metal that matched their rank. First-Circle necklaces would consist of one ring, Second-Circle necklaces would have two, one inside of the other, and so on. The more circles, the heavier the necklace, and Seventh-Circle dragons, on the rare occasion they visited the palace, would be forced into a constant bow by the weight of the metal.
-IceWings are quite superstitious, not unlike SkyWings. Their beliefs vary by region, but a generally common one is that the deep, impenetrable ice cap they live on harbors some ancient, powerful force, and that if it ever were to break or melt away, that power would be unleashed and cause havoc; they see the ice as a protective field that froze over at the dawn of time, and if it unfroze it would be the end of everything they know.
-IceWings will sometimes wear polar bear fur or the pelts of elk and deer, though not for warmth. Lower-Circle dragons will wear the pelts and sometimes even antlers of their own prey, for bragging rights. Higher-Circle dragons simply wear them as a fashion statement and a show of wealth.
-IceWings are educated much more about their own tribe than others, and generally prefer to stick to their own affairs. They have few exports to trade and little interest in those of others. They are not the most diplomatic tribe.
-After the perceived theft of their last animus, they not only blamed NightWings, but also harbored resentment for every other tribe with animus magic, believing themselves to be the original carrier of the gene and therefore the rightful possessor of it. They are extremely protective of even the least useful of their animus gifts.
Diet: Carnivorous. IceWings eat arctic mammals like elk and polar bears, and aquatic mammals like seals and even sometimes narwhals and orcas. They also eat fish and, rarely, a few species of birds. They have no way to cook food and no desire to. Other than a few types of berries in the mountains near the SkyWing border, no plants grow in the arctic, and IceWings live on meat alone.

3000 AS character drawings
(Clearsight, Listener, Thoughtful)
I suppose this might be a new collage? Probably not a complete one, but I would like to draw some of the characters from this time period that I liked or found otherwise notable.
I wanted to include Clearsight's parents in this post, but the prospect of drawing five full-body pictures of dragons in one post filled me with some kind of emotion, so if I do that, it'll likely happen later.
Clearsight
Tumblr media
The mother of pantaloons herself. She is described as slender, beautiful, and as having purple eyes. The graphic novels so far have one depiction of a Nightwing using future-sight and it shows her eyes glowing an eerie white while she does it. Clearsight's method of using her clairvoyance is very unorthodox, but I like to imagine she still gets this effect when she looks ahead at future events. Only in her case it looks less ominous and much more casual. I picture her sitting at the dinner table with her eyes lighting up every few minutes, until her mother finally goes "now dear, we've agreed; no future-vision during meal time." So she sighs and silently continues eating her beet salad.
Also, obligatory mention that the silver scale in the center of her forehead is, once again, a reference to my partner @flamebringer0 's theory about Nightwing powers and indicates the presence of prophetic powers, like eye scales would mark a mind reader.
Listener
Tumblr media
Clearsight's bestie is described as large, long-necked, and curvy, and seems like a good extroverted foil to someone who spends most of her time cooped up inside her own head. She comes across as a bit of a romance-obsessed airhead, but some of the things she tells Clearsight are actually pretty reasonable, and I like to think Clearsight becomes more appreciative of Listener's ideas and influence once she departs the continent and they are separated.
Apparently she later writes a scroll about Clearsight being the most brilliant prophet who ever lived. I would like to know how that affected her life, considering the Nightwing tribe probably remembers Clearsight as "that lady who was fawning over the crazed warlock we all ran away from". Did Listener catch push-back for publishing a laudatory script about someone like that?
Thoughtful
Tumblr media
Here is glass boy. The book describes him as handsome with circular glasses. I accidentally drew him a bit more chubby than I intended, but honestly, I think it suits him. He looks very pleasant and friendly, which seems to be in line with his general character. I am actually very happy with how this drawing turned out.
Also, he is not bipedal in this picture. He is resting his weight on his two hind legs and tail. I think of this as "tripod stance"; it's a body posture a dragon can assume to free up their front legs to do precision work. It is relatively stable, but grows uncomfortable if you stay that way for too long (tail cramp).
Also, you can't really walk like that. To walk on their hind legs with any kind of proficiency, a dragon has to place both of their wings on the ground to substitute their front limbs.

Office Visit
I drew this overhead sketch of an office space and showed it to a few of my friends, and they responded by drawing themselves into the picture as well. Whoops.
I think I like this kind of angle. It makes me sad that there isn't a game that's like The Sims, but focused on dragons. I think that would be really fun.
Tumblr media
I might or might not draw more of these pictures some time in the future. They are very cozy.

(youre making me think you're a wof rp askblog unless you are of course :) )
Tumblr media
I am not an RP ask blog, nope. :)
I do sometimes slip into character and pretend I exist in the canon setting, but that's just because I am a silly person who should only be selectively taken seriously.
Which, mind you, I am open to the idea of answering questions about the character. But I figure most people are here for the art and the WoF headcanons and analysis over my self-indulgence.

Some of you may be aware of this new fad that is going around. The kids refer to these newfangled things as "blooks"; they are kind of like scrolls, but rectangular and heavy.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you that this is dangerous and wrong. I don't know what kind of warped mind looked at something as wonderfully elegant as a scroll and decided to fashion it into an instrument of bludgeoning.
If you see someone who tries to get you hooked on "blooks", you should run away and stay inside for the next three days. They probably drank the Seawing pond water.
----------
I had a bunch of friends twisting my arm and telling me to draw Cricket. All right already, geez, here she is. Hivewings do not have an official graphic novel design yet, so I tried to do some kind of homemade interpretation of what it might look like. It's not the best concept, but for a first attempt it seems adequate.

Have you seen those new(?) cutie cuffs? The Starflight one actually kinda looks like Flawseer!

I'm famous!
Or maybe Starflight is part Sandwing, and there's something about Mastermind's ancestry that he didn't disclose.
But really, that's funny. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
Heyyy publishers, if Wings of Fire is in need of more things to turn into merchandise, here is my reference sheet. Have your people call my people, we'll work something out.

Not sure if you’re taking requests but can you please draw Orca? The murder mystery (the murder mystery sister) if you’ve already drawn her I’d love a link!
I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm taking "requests" as such, since offering that can be a rather precarious slope on the internet. What I am certainly open to though is suggestions! If it's something that intrigues me at the time, or I was already planning to do and just haven't gotten around to yet, I may give it a shot.
Incidentally, drawing Orca was something I already wanted to do at some point in the future, so...
Orca
Tumblr media
I imagine Orca was very similar to Tsunami in looks and physique; both would be fairly large and well-built. Strong. Swift. Good at fighting. Orca might have had the edge in raw physical strength (as a sculptor she would be accustomed to moving large stone blocks around) while Tsunami has better reflexes and instincts.
They're still very similar though; if you were able to put them next to each other at the same age, they'd likely be difficult to tell apart (if one wasn't green and their markings weren't different). I picture Orca with two prominent and large luminous patches over her eyes, which is where she got her name from.
If she had lived, she might have had a potentially interesting dynamic with Tsunami. But in terms of causes of death, there are certainly worse ways to go than decking Coral in the snout.

3000 AS character drawings
I appear to have developed an addiction to drawing dragons. There is no known treatment, so I have been advised to just ride it out and see where it goes. Here are some ancient Seawings:
Prince Fathom
Tumblr media
Fathom is said to look remarkably similar to his descendant Turtle, or at least Darkstalker seems to think so. He could be an unreliable narrator who assumes all green Seawing lads look the same though, who knows.
When I picture Fathom, I imagine him as looking visibly marred by what he experienced. He is careworn and looks tired most of the time because, at night, spiraling thoughts and stress dreams are interfering with his sleep. His general physique is a bit oddly proportioned, with some areas of his body (face and extremities) looking more gaunt than others, indicating that he has rapidly lost weight.
Hoping he was able to return to some form of normalcy and make a recovery after the conclusion of the Darkstalker book.
Indigo
Tumblr media
Fathom's childhood friend, bodyguard, and numerous other things. I have no idea what the plans of the graphic novel adaptations are with regards to the Darkstalker book, so I don't know if she will get an actual depiction any time soon.
I gave her a forward-swept, somewhat wild-looking head fin because I thought that was fitting for her character. It contrasts with the more put-together, rounder, or rigid appearances of the royals she is surrounded by.
Princess Pearl
Tumblr media
Fathom's uptight sister and future Queen of the Seawings. As far as I know, the books never go into detail with regards to her color scheme. I imagine that, in terms of looks, she takes a lot after her grandfather, resulting in a light blue coloration. Some of these traits would then later be passed down the royal Seawing line until they resurface in her ancestor Anemone.
I do sometimes think about what happened after the Darkstalker book. Does she believe her brother is dead? Or is it assumed he evacuated with the rest of the Nightwings? Did Fathom ever try to reconnect with her in later years?
Prince Albatross
Tumblr media
Fathom and Pearl's grandfather and person of historical infamy. The graphic novels draw him very blue, but he is described in text as unnaturally pale, almost white. Really minor detail in his luminous patches: I drew them that way to suggest he passed his spherical markings on to Pearl (which she then got her name from) and the crescent markings were inherited by Fathom.
Also, his ear is frayed and worn. I imagine he developed a nervous tick where he squeezes and yanks his ear whenever he is upset due to his sister's constant abuse.

It's late and I should be asleep, so here is a silly half-conscious anecdote:
I am absolutely obsessed with this Tsunami face.
This one... I post this face at my friends all the time. It's such a versatile expression; with just one look it says "Ah, whatever do you mean?", "No, I'm completely innocent.", "You must be imagining things.", "I've had another great idea, you wanna hear it?", "Hey, are you gonna eat that?" "Noo, but I want that!", "You can't be mad at meee.", "May I bug you incessantly for the next half hour?"...
Ok, I realize most of these sentiments are about being a nuisance. I guess that means I am blessed with wonderful people who put up with my annoyingness.
But anyway, this is a great face. I use it as an emote and it's been a permanent resident in my #2 most used spot. Very good.
