Have to say I'm loving Marble Sky. It's clear you put a lot of thought into the story and I'm excited to see where it's going.

Figured I'd weigh into the Oscar commentary going on and I think honestly the shirt he was wearing in the flashback when Ward was talking about how he ended up in space might say a lot about his character as a whole.

If you don't look at the shirt closely it says "the earth is fla-" and naturally people will fill in the missing 't'. A shirt that seems to support flat earthers is particularly tone deaf given he'd just walked into a building dedicated to science and specifically space. It's the sort of thing people would instantly react to and think lesser of Oscar for. Much like the fact that he comes from a rich family. Or the fact that he seems to embrace the world with puppy like enthusiasm. It creates an image of someone who is ignorant, who doesn't pay attention, and is careless to the point of being arrogant about it.

However looking closely that's not what the shirt says. it's just the text for the rest of it is small, harder to read and purposefully arranged so its divorced from the rest of the larger letters.

And I find that fascinating.

So reading the shirt properly it says "the earth is FLA-bergasting". This message I think has a lot of layers especially combined with Oscar's established fascination with aliens, biology and stuff that we have seen with him previously. It's a message that celebrates the world and all life in it. It's a message that acknowledges that understanding that world is impossible but compelling none the less. It's a message that says the earth is confusing and hard to understand and Oscar is not pretending to know everything about it. Some of this might be just my interpretation of the message so take that with a grain of salt. Still the difference between the first and second is interesting because in the first its a person asserting they know something as complete truth while the second basically admits they don't know anything at all.

Now apply this to Oscar. We're presented with a chaotic lovable doofus who is brimming with childlike wonder at the start of the story. We're presented with a "rich kid" who got into space because his parents paid for it. We're presented with a guy who seems okay with the slaughter of others in order to protect himself. A lot of people are looking at Oscar and seeing "the earth is Fla(t)"

However we've barely scratched the surface of this story or this character not to mention the situation as a whole. So I'm staring at the smaller hidden letters (metaphorically) and wondering exactly what is actually going on with this guy. Because I'm pretty sure "the earth is Fla-bergasting" and so is Oscar.

Thank you for indulging this long ask. I felt like ranting because I love Oscar and this story.

There are three things in this world I can look at forever. How fire burns, how water flows, and how someone carefully analyzes a character in whom I have invested a lot of time and effort.

I find it funny how everyone in the comments are freaking out about Oscar complying here.

Honestly this is the smart move. Oscar himself clearly understands the situation he's in at this moment. He has been a goof this whole time but he also has been talking to and learning the most about how these guys work. We all wrote him off as an idiot but he probably understands how impossible it is for him to do anything in this situation.

I mean what is he supposed to do right now? Try and trick them by acting like there aren't any dark marked teegardians there? The might just mean the hunting party starts killing indiscriminately or he loses credit and value as a sight hound. Especially if they do find one by accident while he's pretending they're not there because its not like they don't know the bird guys are there they just can't distinguish the tastier ones.

Oscar lays this out pretty frankly with his statement "its either you or me and it can't be me" Oscar is choosing his survival over his empathy. If Oscar was the one brain celled idiot we all thought he was he'd have probably chosen empathy and gotten killed. However by choosing his survival he not only gives himself a shot at living but he also gains more credit with the scary aliens and starts to assert himself as not prey but useful. Which secures his position all the more.

On a more optimistic note him making himself useful now might help him do something more later. At the moment though, he has no power to affect this situation except to save himself.

Its very human and I love it.

One of the most life-changing things I ever learned came from Mythbusters, where they tested and proved (with cognitive testing puzzles and reaction time tests) that lying down and resting with the intention to sleep STILL provided significant mental benefits over just staying awake, even if a person couldn’t fall asleep in the amount of time they had. 

It helps me to actually sleep to know that just lying down with my eyes closed is still doing me some good, and helps me to not freak out/beat myself up when I stay up later than intended. Any amount of rest is better than no rest!

So if you didn’t know that…now you do

I also find it low key unfair Raph picks on Leo for flaking out on training. Like what Donnie and Mikey don't have independance and agency? They didn't also just pick Leo's fun over Raph? I mean Leo's leader sure but this has never stopped any of them from doing what they feel like: waves at entire series. Given season one I totally see why Leo is like "no screw this" and clearly to an extent Donnie and Mikey AGREE.

Leo is known to be jokey and stuff when stressed. This is established episode one and it seems like even when he tries to be serious NO ONE LISTENS TO HIM. So yeah Many Unhappy Returns rolls up Leo is the least serious likely because 1) panicking would not solve the problem. 2) he's trying to raise moral. 3) he is in fact just as terrified as everyone else and hiding it the only way he knows how. 4) once splinter comes up with an idea Leo determines in an instant that: splinter shouldn't do it alone big mama is dangerous, his portals will enable them to do it faster, he is technically the weakest of the group and likely wouldn't contribute much (wasn't in fact managing to contribute much) to actually directing stalling Shredder, and has faith his family will manage as he speed runs dealing with someone who outwitted everyone but him last time they dealt with her (April excluded). All he gets is everyone yelling at him about it except for some validation from Raph.

More than that though the timing for Splinter to make Leo leader is outright UNFAIR as the one who got them through the crisis rallied everyone together and lead them to save the day WAS RAPH!!!! Raph helped everyone unlock their ninpo. Raph lead the damn charge to save their family. Raph was the one who understood the need for a tactical retreated. Raph was honestly fully being the heroic leader he has been trying and wanting to be ONLY FOR SPLINTER TO PASS THE TITLE TO LEO!!!

So flash forward to move and maybe Raph isn't just scared maybe he's a little resentful because now he's basically in Leo's shoes in season one. A leader in Leo who is just playing around when the situation is serious none of his brother's listening to him but listening to Leo instead. Leo probably is upset too because as a result of this shift Raph now is no longer acting like he trusts him. Constantly questioning him or trying to get Leo to do things his way. Which is why Leo just dials things up to eleven because again THIS IS HOW HE COPES.

That's what I think Leo means during his speech to Raph "I though you yelled because you didn't like how I do things, but now I know you yelled because you were scared." and he gets it that they can't exactly screw around and be safe at the same time doing this stuff. Literally the way these two handle fear causes conflict.

And I'm sorta rambling now but I also find it annoying how Splinter can just ruin the whole dynamic and relationship of his son's with stupid ass comments and not even realize or apologize for it. Why does he get to decide who is leader? Why the heck don't they just say "y'know... how 'bout no?"

I have problems with them acting like they're a team rather than a family sometimes.

Here’s a thought-

When Splinter says Leo’s the leader at the end of Season 2…pretty sure he was joking.

After so many high stakes and high emotions, he (a bit cluelessly) makes a joke to add some levity, just to make things a bit easier for he and his sons to digest everything that happened. It was a lot that happened, so it makes sense that Splinter wants to make things that much softer for everyone.

But- making a joke like that, after everything they all just went through…I can definitely see how the events of the movie pave out in response.

For example, by joking about Leo in particular having the responsibility of a leader, that puts him directly in the sight of Raph’s building anxieties. Because after everything, it’s clear that Raph really started taking the hero name seriously to the point that he started undermining his own fun and childhood in the process. So in the eyes of a Raph who is so worried about what could happen if they’re not prepared again, Leo in particular kind of stands almost as a point of danger in that aspect.

And with the joke of Leo “leading” in any capacity ringing out over them, it’s easy to blame Leo and Leo alone whenever he goes and goofs off with Mikey and Donnie. I think as well that the concept of a leader being spoken after the Shredder just pushes more weight on Raph’s shoulders and makes him realize how much goofing off they did before when they should have been better heroes (despite them all just being kids...)

Raph knows his brothers are good, he knows and has pride in them and himself in turn, but it terrifies him to know that they won’t be ready for the next big threat, and Leo directly going against this caution even more than usual just pushes Raph to want to try more.

As for Leo- keep in mind what happened all throughout “Many Unhappy Returns.” Keep in mind what happened all throughout the series in general. In the former, Splinter more than once points out how he would rather have his other sons with him than Leo, especially because they “would take this seriously”…even though Leo was taking it seriously. (Not that Splinter should be expected to read what Leo was doing when Leo wasn’t making his plans clear, but that wording sticks with kids.) Even after Leo’s plan pulled through, Raph’s the one who spoke in trust of Leo, not Splinter.

As for what happens in the series in general…well, we see Leo mess up a lot, apologize a lot, get his brothers out of messes a lot, and even when he does well or is responsible it’s either glossed over or still seen as goofing off (no I will never be over that moment where Leo almost got Gus’s tags and got screwed over out of pure bad luck.)

So imagine hearing a joke like that as Leo, who for a good chunk of especially the start of the series has been a lowkey voice of reason. The idea that Leo being responsible for the team is nothing but a joke…? It’s understandable that it could feel like a blow, that it could push him to want to try less.

Especially after everything they just went through.

They’re heroes. | They’re kids.

Why shouldn’t they care? | Why should they care?

Various pieces of information from the Rise Q&A back in February

It was revealed that there are other Hidden Cities other than the one seen in Rise & there had been plans for the Turtles to visit the Hidden City beneath Tokyo.

2. Splinter was able to use Leo's mystic odachi so easily due to the fact that Splinter had spent a lot of time in the Hidden City & because of this Splinter has a great deal of mystic knowledge, with Splinter also having developed his mystic abilities but he has stopped using those abilities until the events of the series.

3. More information was given about the missing Turtle Siblings & it was stated the Frida, Big Mama's Assistant would have most likely joined her brothers during the future timeline, it was also stated that the other missing Turtle Sibling would have possibly been named Camille after Camille Claudel.

4. When asked on how a Dungeons & Dragons episode would go it was stated that April would be the DM, Raph would be a fighter class, Mikey would be an illusionist, Leo would be an assassin or their & Donnie would insist on being a scientist since he's sure that there was 'at least one sensible person back then'.

5. The Rise version of Renet could have possibly been used to explore different timelines that might have happened if certain events in the movie had happened differently.

6. After the events of the movie Casey is traveling around the world fighting remnants of the Krang & the Foot Clan.

7. When asked about the Turtles relationship with Draxum it was stated that in contrast to Mikey who accepted Draxum the most easily Leo is the most skeptical however it was also stated that Leo would have eventually 'gotten over' his grudge towards Draxum as there were multiple scrapped episodes planned where Leo & Draxum would have been forced to work together.

8. There were plans for the Turtles to eventually go to the Krang's original dimension meaning that it would have been likely for the Turtles to encounter the traditional dimension X/Z stuff such as the Neutrinos.

9. When asked about Casey Juniors relationship with the past/ present version of Leo it was stated that despite it being slightly different due to them being around the same age now Casey Junior can't help but still view Leo as a father figure.

10. It was stated that Splinter has never celebrated the Turtle's Birthdays in the past due to it being to closely related to his negative feelings towards his own mutation however it was also stated that after Splinter's development in the series he would start celebrating the Turtle's Birthday with them.

11. The reason that the Future Version of Leonardo was the one who raised Casey Junior it was stated that it was due to the fact that the Future Version of Leonardo had a special affinity for Casey Junior & also felt particularly responsible for Casey Junior after his mother was gone.

12. When asked what the Rise version of Miyamoto Usagi would have been like it was revealed that a possible plan for Usagi was that his home dimension would have been overrun by the Krang causing Usagi to travel to the Turtles dimension for help due to them being the only one who have ever defeated the Krang.

13. When discussing crossovers between TMNT iterations it was stated that a crossover between Rise & the 1987 cartoon or the 2003 cartoon would have been a possibility due to them also being 2D animated series.

14. April & Sunita were planned to have more 'girls night' episodes together.

It was also stated that Casey would have possibly have developed a dynamic would both April & Sunita so there is a possibility that Casey would have been included in the 'girls night' episodes with April & Sunita as well.
