Amy had never actually been inside Alouette’s office and hadn’t even caught as much as a glimpse of it; he always kept it shut whether he was using it or not. And she knew right now that he was not.
The lights were off, and despite the overcast sky making it hard to see, Amy left it that way to not draw attention to any light that may creep through the nooks and crannies of the door. The maid was always wandering nearby.
Stacks of magic tomes were on the floor, the desk and more were stuffed into the bookcases. There were even stacks on top of an terrarium, housing a snake that slithered around inside. The magical tomes brought Amy some relief. At least he was still going through spell books to find her a way home.
A large portion of the room was taken up by the desk and Amy walked around it, running her hand against the stained wood and the elegant designs carved into its sides. A newton’s cradle sat on top and she couldn’t help swinging the marbles to clack back and forth.

Amy rolled over to face the window. On a clear day she could see far into the distance at the remains of the Windflower castle. At night she kept the curtains shut because that’s when the nightmares returned and the memories of the dancing flames and the burning flesh haunted her. Today, thick clouds and heavy rain were all that were visible. It suited her mood just fine.
Alouette had left. He was supposed to help her learn more about her newfound ability but after her ascension and their discussion on the balcony, he was gone even after promising nothing should change between them. It was for important business, he said. Amy thought she was supposed to be important; that’s why he shared his own blood.
The last time Alouette went away for business was when Robin disappeared. She was essentially kidnapped and locked in the basement. Was he out there kidnapping someone else right now? Is this why he didn’t talk about his business much? Though even if he had, Amy was just as much interested in it as she was her own father’s so it’s not like she would have paid much attention. But she could always learn.

With her face down into her pillow, Amy could barely breathe. Tightness spread across her chest as her lungs yearned for a satisfying breath of air but it was still nothing like the desperation Robin would have felt in her last moments. There was a knock on her door and the handle rattled but it was locked so no one could open it.
“Come out tonight and dance with us,” Vinyl called from beyond the door. “You can’t lock yourself in there forever.”
Amy took a deep breath into the soft cotton and choked on the fibres she inhaled out of the pillow. She turned over to face the ceiling, and breathed properly again. Robin didn’t have that choice. Amy gave her no choice. Amy killed her.
“Leave me alone.”
“This rain hasn’t stopped for weeks. We’re sick of being stuck indoors!” Vinyl said.
“Don’t be a square, Ava! ” Patchouli shouted.
“You’ll just make fun of my dancing anyway,” Amy said and thought she heard Patchouli and Tiger laugh.
“Suit yourself. Catch you on the flipside.” Vinyl was gone, Tiger and Patchouli with her.

Not knowing where to look or what to do Amy ran back to her room and shut the door, pacing between it and the window.
Draped over the back of a chair was the coat she was given on her first day here, from the pastor’s wife in the church. Seeing it reminded her of the card Pond gave to her, and the conversation they had when they met. He told her about the city curfew and how someone like her shouldn't be out there alone because of it but Alouette interrupted before he could explain. Only now did she start to wonder. She stuck her hands into all the coat pockets until her fingers brushed against the card’s smooth edges and sat on the bed with it in her hands.

Before Amy arrived here Orris Thistle had disappeared, and then Pond had come to see Alouette about his death. All Amy knew about Orris was that he had been a very old and very close friend of Alouette’s and that Robin had killed him. No one else knew Robin had been the one to kill Orris but Robin had said Alouette made her do it. Then Amy killed Robin because it’s what Alouette told her to do.
‘He manipulates emotions’ Robin had screamed at her. Is that Alouette’s true ability? Amy didn’t actually know what it was. Alouette had such a wealth of knowledge for spellwork and he used it all so freely. Everlast’s ability was similar, he could persuade anyone to do whatever he wanted, but her father was a good man. Was Alouette?

There was a phone outside her room. Amy read over the details on Pond’s card ready to open the door but heard the distinct sound of another door opening outside. The maid was upstairs! Five minutes later when no one else came or went or moved about, Amy made her call.

With a final clack the marbles stopped swinging. Amy leaned over to swing them again, bumping the chair from under the desk and sending it lurching backwards. It wheeled into an old mirror, propped against the wall, and waiting to be hung on the bare wall above.
All the walls in the office were bare apart from a single painting on the other side of the room above the fireplace. Even though the art work reminded her of the burning huts of Windflower, it didn't interest her as much as the paintings she found dislodged behind the mirror. Amy’s hands trembled as she moved each canvas, recognising each and every one of them.

They were hers from Dianthus's gallery. The ones of the crows that a very secretive buyer purchased from her father. The ones that shouldn’t exist yet because she won’t be painting them for another fifty years. Scrawled in each bottom corner were her initials: A.V.A
A fire burst in the fireplace and the burning huts of Windflower glowed in amber light.

Only the top drawer opened easily after Amy jiggled the handles. Her hand rummaged around the papers inside, piercing her finger on something sharp. She yelped, pulling her hand back out. A red spot appeared on her finger tip and Amy stuck her finger in her mouth to stop it bleeding. The culprit, a scorched piece of wood, was jammed at the back of the drawer. Amy wrestled it free, sensing something familiar about the way it felt in her hands but with no need for a broken stick, she jammed it back where it came from.
Tumblr media
Amy shuffled through the papers with her other hand while she sucked on her finger. She felt some pages that felt like drawing paper, the thick kind like in her sketchbooks, and pulled them out of the drawer. Folklore Phlox’s face stared back at her, one of the pictures she’d drawn before ripping them all up.
Why would Alouette have a picture of Lorey? He had complimented her work before, and even suggested investing in her art. Maybe he was going to show it to someone; but why Lorey and not one of the hundred of other things she’d drawn or could paint. She stuffed the portrait back in the drawer and slammed it shut.

“You have nowhere else to go.”
“I’ll manage.” Though Amy had no idea how.
Alouette shook his head. “No. Stay. We’re close to finding a spell to get you home, I’m sure of it. I promised to get you home, and I stick to my promises, Ava. Don’t let our personal circumstances interfere with that.”
“Alright. Thank you.”
“I’ll have the maid make something to prevent side effects.”
“Side effects?”
“Of the family way,” he said and then left.

Amy pressed her hand to her stomach. She had no idea what had come over her last night. The times she and Lorey had slept together had all been meticulously planned down to the location, the time they would start to how long it would take. Both of them lived with their parents and Amy herself was keeping her relationship a secret. Amy wanted a family, and had daydreamed about starting one with Lorey, and had even gone as far as imagining one with Alouette if she stayed here. But she wasn’t ready for a baby yet. And perhaps she hadn’t been ready to ascend.

Alouette pointed to a dense patch of forest beyond the estate, somewhere out where they had walked through during the night. “On the way back we made it to about there before I teleported us home.” His fingertip stroked along Amy’s arm. “You were rather insatiable. I didn’t think you would wait until we got home to get your clothes off.”
There was a tree. Her back was against the tree and her knickers were around her ankles while… Goosebumps formed under the touch of his fingertips making her lose her train of thought. Alouette’s hands had stroked her arms last night, while she straddled him on the bed, and while someone else pulled her bloodied dress over her head before tossing it aside. Her underwear was long gone by then, probably out there by those trees with her shoes.

“I’m sorry, but last night. Us. It was a mistake.” Amy said. She moved away, before she began to feel more from Alouette's touch, though she wasn't quite sure she had to touch him for him to make her feel anything at all.
“Mistake?”
“Whatever happened between us; I didn’t mean to make you believe I wanted you that way. I’ll be eternally grateful for everything you’ve done for me but I have a boyfriend I love very much-”
“He’s not here. He’s not even born yet!”
“I know it's crazy. And I'm sorry, I really am.” Amy stepped towards the house. “I should leave, I don’t want to keep taking advantage of you or your hospitality.”

Birds flitted in the trees, singing their morning songs. Amy listened to them while staring out over the pool below trying to piece her missing memories together. Last night was her ascension. The sims in attendance grovelled at her feet and chanted her name but now they’re all naked in Alouette’s bedroom and sleeping on the floor.
A memory of running through the woods barefoot came to her mind. Is that why she couldn’t find her shoes? Her thoughts were drowned out by the raspy caws of crows who scared the songbirds away.
Tumblr media
“Good morning,” Alouette said behind her. He had a robe draped over him though it wasn’t fully closed. He at least had pulled on some underwear.
“Morning,” Amy mumbled.
Alouette reached for her but Amy dodged out of his way. “Is something wrong?”
“I don't know,” Amy said. “I can't remember.”
Tumblr media
”That can happen with blood magic if you’re not used to it.” Alouette said. “But everything went according to ritual. You took to it rather well.”
Her ascension wasn’t just any ascension; it was bound in blood magic! Amy ran her fingers across her chest to feel for any sign of a wound, but there was not even a scar.

Her head hurt. Amy woke slowly, her groggy eyes blinking at the steady stream of morning light coming through the window. She had a vague memory of lying on the bed looking up at the moon through it last night. And then? She couldn’t remember.
Beside her were steady breaths and she shuffled around to find Alouette laying next to her, still asleep, and naked. Under the covers was her own naked body. Did they sleep together? Something moved at her feet and Amy found one of Alouette’s coven members draped across the foot of the bed but she wasn’t familiar enough with their hairy buttocks to know who it was. Did she sleep with them too? Soft snores could be heard from the floor. Who else is in here? Why can't she remember?!
Tumblr media
Amy peeled herself out of the sheets, escaping the warmth of Alouette’s body heat, and crept out of the bed, tiptoeing around the room trying to find her clothes. She didn't see any of her own things amongst the sleeping naked bodies and settled for covering herself with a towel she found. Before anyone in the room awoke, she slipped through the bedroom door and went outside to the balcony.

Before collecting the photos and matching them back together with their files, Pond sat at the table for a while to look over them one last time. He’d worked so hard putting this case together only to lose it - and to who? Probably Agents Geranium and Crocus who couldn’t find their own noses on their own faces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blinds were drawn on the windows separating his boss’s office from the rest of the agents' open work space but Pond could see Sonora's shadow toiling away inside. He knew his boss wouldn’t be able to see him out here with the blinds drawn, and there was no one else in the room either. Taking a chance, Pond slipped one of the files into his desk drawer. No one will even know that it’s missing.
