I don’t normally make this sort of content but I’m feeling a lot of anger and sadness over the recent banning of pride tape in the NHL and feel the need to say something.

I am openly queer and play hockey. No I’m never going to go pro but it’s a community I’m heavily involved in and that has changed my life for the better. The hate that is being propagated by the head of the NHL is not a representation of the wider community and we should not let the hate become the overwhelming narrative.

When I first joined my local league I was a young teenager barely passed. I’d been bullied by my peers and dismissed by my parents and the rink was the only safe space I had. I can say with no doubt in my mind that without hockey I would not be here writing this post today. The community saved my life and amongst all the hate I feel the need to share my story of acceptance.

When I told my leagues organisers that I didn’t want to go by the name of my insurance papers I wasn’t met with invasive questions they only asked what I would prefer to go by and neither they nor my team ever once looked back.

Since I started playing I’ve always taped my blade as the trans pride flag, that tape job means more to me that I could ever express with words. When my captain asked me what the colours meant and I told him it was trans pride, it wasn’t just met with acceptance, it was met with him taping his blade to match in a show to solidarity. A display of support I could never quantify the importance of to a non queer person.

One of the few times I’ve been met with hate while playing in a national tournament, before I could even open my mouth to defend myself a man who I’d only met once before leapt to my defence to shut down the homophobic comments.

Hockey IS for everyone.

Just because the NHL doesn’t want us doesn’t mean we’re not a valued part of the community.

PSA: As a queer person, please, don’t invite me over to your place and expect me to sit correctly on your furniture. It’s not gonna happen and you’re gonna get mad. I look at a couch and my brain is like, “Seat cushions are fake, boring, out of fashion. Let’s use the arm rest instead. Dragons perch, they clearly know what’s comfiest. Or oooooo! Better yet, lay upside down and prop your feet up against the wall or just wiggle ‘em in the air in the middle of the room because sitting still is overrated!”

To prevent unnecessary stress for the both of us, consider:

- A beanbag chair on the floor

- A pile of blankets and soft plushies

- Only inviting me into rooms with old furniture that you don’t care about

- Meeting at a coffee/tea shop because I’m probably lurking there anyway just for the vibes

- Releasing your cat or dog or other friendly pet into the room so that I can just be distracted and cuddle them on the floor (this option is tricky because you should not expect me to pay attention to you once I have spotted the baby)

Tumblr Community Labels PSA

I have some actual writing advice, after having been up all night:

Lean into your strengths, hard. Let’s say you have an action scene planned, and action scenes are the most difficult for you. (Like for me.) What is the least difficult for you? Add more of that. Dialog, description, characters’ inner thoughts, whatever. You’ll still be stuck writing the action, but putting some of what you’re best at in there will help grease the wheels.

I sometimes forget this and try to be a kind of writer I’m not. So I hope this is useful for someone else, but I’m also writing it here as a reminder to myself.

This sounds like a fic premise

I actually did bite my dm with explicit consent. because I was trying to argue that a ranger/barbarian's bite would be d6+Strength Modifier. and not d4+Strength Modifier. and he was like lmao human bites aren't even that strong. and I said bet. and he said well bite me then as strong as an 18 attack roll would be (the prison guard had 14AC btw) and we had to stop the game because he had to go get stitches.

also he didn't wanna say he let himself get bit to win an argument that he lost so badly he's in the emergency room, so he was like "a rat did it" and the nurse turns her head 12 degrees to the left and sees my bloody mouth. and goes "yeah okay that happens"

and we did get the barbarian bite attack to be d6+Strength Modifier. I'm also now engaged to this guy and this campaign I get to be the dm!

To any fic writers who worry they are wasting their time... I read a fic for a relatively small and inactive fandom about three years ago. And there was one specific scene where a character watched another dancing like an idiot to a beyonce song and it was so sweet and loving that even now years later I have that song on one of my spotify playlist so every once in a while it will play and remind me of that fic, and every time it does I smile and feel a little happier.

The stats on a fic will never really tell you if your writing touched someone. There's no numerical way to show you what impact you made. Maybe you are wasting time, or maybe you are writing something that someone will remember for a long time, something that will never fail to make them smile.
