What do you make of Shyam suddenly losing his insane obsession with Khushi and suddenly just caring for money? (I realise it was always an important factor in his marriage with Anjali but the switchover was insane?)
Hey,
My honest opinion about this is that it's a writing flaw. There was a lot going into writing Shyam, and then, unfortunately, there was just a lot left out on executing him as a character.
All the plot of IPK, including characters, took a rude halt post Holi (which I guess was for IPL season so they didn't want to do anything major during the expectant low trp month cause people would be watching cricket).
And the thing is, post Holi I don't think anything recovered.
Shyam's fixation with Khushi was illogical - because Anjali and the Raizadas were eating out of his palms and his financial security was confirmed, thus his fixation with Khushi made little sense but it was addictive. Very eerily similar with Arnav - that's the thing that the show very brilliantly walked on. That Arnav and Shyam could be two sides of the same coin.
So Shyam losing his fixation to Khushi and getting invested in Arnav's money could be two things:
the creators losing the plot of the show
Arnav's plan worked - having Khushi be a married woman just reduced Shyam's attraction to her because she isn't the virginal young woman he wants (and we know cause he was desperate to know if the couple was banging or not tbh).
And Shyam's interest in Khushi heightens once he learns that Arnav-Khushi haven't consummated their wedding.
Which, again, doesn't make sense in him not doing anything to chase Khushi again. In fact Holi also ends with Shyam promising to use Khushi's lack of info about why she was forced to marry against her.
But Shyam... doesn't.
Shyam's fixation with Arnav's money on paper makes sense - he lost Khushi to him so now what Shyam has is not enough, he just doesn't want Arnav's money - he now wants to be Arnav. Thinks he deserves everything that Arnav has.
Which would've been brilliant but it wasn't half as well explored as his descent to madness in attempting to murder Shashi was.
It rather came off across as him wanting to be a freeloader.
IMO, it would've been brilliant to have seen Shyam retreat, trying to calculate his decisions and realize that if Arnav isn't letting Shyam have what he wants, then Shyam just needs to be someone who can let his wills happen.
i.e., get everything Arnav has.
Including Khushi.
Thus Khushi is still in the radar, but now he's actively behind Arnav's assets and wealth (something which was in the long run, but now he's actively fastening his plan).
I don't know if you saw Curry & Cyanide - it was a chilling true story of how a nefarious woman wormed her way into an established family. I totally think Shyam was that character.
And tbh, I have NO idea why they just switched his motivations. But it's interesting because that's close to the timeframe when Khushi stopped being a parallel protagonist of the show and Shyam turned into Arnav's villain as opposed to Khushi's.
And, it kinda didn't work for me.
Best,
Jalebi (I legit didn't think while writing this out - went on vibes, lol)

ITV writer when they (not so accidentally) create abusive male leads and need to back track:
I KNOW! Let's add a track of damsel female lead unjustly suffering so he can rescue her and become a hero again.
ITV writers when they (completely by accident) write a flaw into their female lead:
OOPS! qUICk GET IN THAT FEMALE SUFFERING. hehehe now we never have to deal with pesky *eurgh* female character development.
ITV writer when they need filler episodes to get through a patch of rough TRPs:
Hmmm...shall we add an endless loop of female lead unjustly suffering?
ITV writers when they breath: FEMALE LEAD AND ONLY FEMALE LEAD (NOT OTHER WOMEN IN THE SHOW) S U F F E RING

The soundtrack of 'Tu hi bata mere maula' evokes a unique emotional response somehow. I wonder if its impact stems from the fact that the song is narrated by a third person, providing a description of the circumstances surrounding the two main characters. It gives the impression of being orchestrated by destiny, and I love how they intertwined the entire narrative with the concept of a divine being/God, who is portrayed as the playwright of their grand love story. There are not many songs, I suppose, that adopt the viewpoint of an observer or storyteller. What are your thoughts on this?
Hello hello,
Please don't forget to write a hello! Cause person here, not ChatGPT :)
Oh absolutely - based in Lucknow and with Arnav just not really being written as a conventional hero, there are strong themes of sufism, destined love, a difficult love and really how if fate didn't intervene - this would've never happened.
IPKKND is a love story that shouldn't have happened.
Which is why the lyrics are so pointed to destiny, to God, to whoever wrote this tale because it's their will why this is happening.
It's never about two halves coming together. It's never about each getting their perfect love.
This is an intentional, difficult love story between absolute opposites with the fundamental will of the maker. And usually title tracks are about 'oh I love her, oh I love him, oh I have feelings, oh these feelings are tough'
But IPKKND reminds us, periodically, that it's a story. A fictional story where two worlds collide only because of someone else's will. So much so that even the observer - who is more than a human but less than a God - watches the story pan in wonder.
And it's also the specific scenes they utilize this song.
It's almost always done when 'destiny' is changing.
Tumblr media
We hear it first when Khushi hopes she and Payal get married to the same house. And we have a saying in our culture that daily, twice, Maa Saraswati sits on our tongues hence our words may come true.
And it does for Khushi and Payal.
Tumblr media
Then we hear it during Teej when an awareness seeps into Arnav and Khushi as Khushi, unintentionally, is performing a ritual that hints at their future. And the most gorgeous part is that it is left with discomfort in characters and never verbalized that what happened was symbolic.
Tumblr media
The discomfort in both the characters - who didn't move from their spot - is evidence that both know what it implies. Be it an atheist or a devotee.
Tumblr media
Then we hear it when Arnav has comforted Khushi, developing and strengthening their emotional bond (which they haven't developed until this point) and when Akash and Payal are going through their worst. Again, it's such a poignant scene in the show because this changes the course of all the four characters.
Tumblr media
And this is where we actually see, and perhaps root, for a love story between Arnav and Khushi. And such a crucial point to finally drop in the lyric "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?" because finally it is showing something akin of being a love story, which it wasn't until now.
Tumblr media
Then Diwali - a moment of utter mismatch of intentions, decisions, actions and reactions.
Tumblr media
And then, of course, during the band aid engagement because of the sheer contrast between what fate has written, what's symbolically happening, what is appropriate and what are the characters emotions.
The most powerful aspect of this song is how true this song is to IPKKND's roots. This, will always be the theme song of the show. There's no finality of love here. Just utter confusion, and a plea to God/fate that if this is your will and this is where they're going then given who they are, complimentary yet different, guide them.
It is poetic.
Love,
Jalebi

IPKKND SS: Fall Out of Love
Tumblr media
Chapter 1
When days got tough, and nights tougher, Khushi shivered on the poolside floor wondering what did she do wrong. In her religion, everything was a repercussion for a deed done.
The man she loved grew stranger everyday. At one point his anger was in his words, now they lived as impressions on her arms.
God, wouldn't she give her whole life if she got a day to see the softness she had seen when he had danced his way straight into his heart.
At this point she wondered if that ever happened, or if it was product of her crazy mind. Maybe Arnav had never loved her, maybe it was all a result of her obsession with him.
Her sister had been right, Khushi had been fixated far into Arnav, ever since the day she saw him. Even when he wanted nothing to do with her.
At first it was anger, then disrespect, then curiosity, then infatuation and finally...
A cold had settled into Delhi, the winds chilled her bones. Her thin salwar was no match. She could not find herself to take the blanket on the floor.
This time, it was not self preservation. It was insects.
If she tried to get it washed, questions would be raised. The househelp was familiar with the bedroom linen. Why would it be in the garden long enough to get infested? Mami had been suspicious, and Khushi could not bear Arnav directing another play of them being happily married.
She could never see the difference between his acting and reality.
-
The blanket was washed, dried, and neatly packed. The floor was cleared, and an outdoor bedroll was in the corner of the garden.
Tears of joy rolled down her cheeks as she smelled the fresh blanket. Her body cried in relief as she laid down in the mattress.
It was the first time she slept for more than three hours in a month.
-
"Slept well?" Khushi was caught off guard. Not by the question, but the person asking it.
Shyam Manohar Jha.
Khushi ran away, her mind coming to a conclusion it didn't want to.
She bumped into Arnav, anger blazing in his eyes.
Her question of the blanket being washed remain in thin air as Manorama commented on their proximity as lovebirds being unable to separate, not noticing the soft bruise that began to swell in her arms once he left her grip.
In another time, she would've thought she saw true concern in Arnav's eyes over the mention of insects.
But for now, her mind worried over other details.
Over who got her bedding clean and washed.

Communication is the key of a good relationship. These guys had explosive sextual tension, undying live, complicated history between them, but when it came to communication, they failed at it, damn it. With times they learned to a degree. But it is the tale of that time when they were in the very nescent stage of establishing communication between them.
But in these scene admist of their angry screaming they heard each other like never before.
From Arnav to Khushi
Tumblr media
Rituals and customs didn't matter very much to Arnav, but they mattered to khushi.Arnav slowly came to realization that their elopement and his lack of faith in traditions and custom had prevented khushi to have a proper tradition marriage with all the rituals that she always dreamt of.So,to rectify this situation, the atheist and Gamophobic Arnav agreed to have a fully traditional marriage with proper rituals and customs only for khushi. And not only he learned about the rituals of marriage probably from the internet but also he tried to participate in them despite of clear discomfort. And his respect for her faith brought khushi immense happiness.

Yes,rituals and customs had meanings to him because they had meaning to khushi and khushi held the ultimate meaning in Arnav's life.
From Khushi to Arnav
Tumblr media
It was always a great confusion and reason of many of Arnav's heartache that he thought khushi didn't feel for him or didn't feel as much as he did. And admist the all betrayal that was the reason of Arnav's heartache was that she might not feel for him at all and worst she was in love with someone else. That confusion cleared out during kidnapping when khushi risked her life for him. But for a traditional girl like khushi to go against her religious values was ultimate proof of love for her. And she would do that gladly for Arnav. For her love is religion. She had gone against her religious values for Arnav and she would do that again gladly and yes,his feelings had meaning to her. This girl would do anything for his love. Nothing was more important than his feelings and whatever he wanted had utmost meaning to her.As she was not sure of his feelings before, she was fearful to share intimacy with him.She wasn't afraid anymore. So,she gave herself to him in all the sense of this mortal world without any religious marriage.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?
I remember back in 2017 during the Christmas Holidays, my sister and I used to watch IPKKND like crazy. I would watch 10 episodes in a day. This is my favorite Indian series of all time. I'm mostly a fan of Bollywood movies, but this series was a heartthrob. The two actors who played Arnav and Khushi had such chemistry together. I can watch and rewatch it and still never get tired. It's just like Charmed for me.
