Hi! Tallahassee has been one of my favorite albums for a long time, but I JUST started thinking about point-of-view in it. I realized that I was hearing the whole album as being sung by Mr. Alpha and also that, whenever I listen to a song in general, I assume without thinking about it that the narrator has the same gender as the singer, unless explicitly stated otherwise. Are there songs on Tallahassee that are not Mr. Alpha's, or other songs you've written that are definitely narrated by women?

when I started getting serious about writing songs, in college, I always tried to keep gender pronouns out it so that there’d be a permanent ambiguity to it. people hear a masculine voice and tend to identify the singer as male, but it is more fun from a writing/performing standpoint (for me, I should say) to keep things loose. also, that way anybody can sing your song without having to go switching pronouns around. 

on occasion I’ve introduced/deployed some gender-specific word or phrase kind of for the shock of it: “one of us/I’m not saying who/has got rocks in her head” in “Orange Ball of Hate,” “…and tell everyone you were a good wife” in “No Children.” But for the most part the idea with Tallahassee is that either partner could be singing the songs most of the time. Because they are truly partners, one flesh, of one accord, two spirits sailing aboard a doomed ship toward the same bleak end; and what God has joined together let not man put asunder, Mark 10:9, however cf also Florida statute 61.052, to wit, No judgment of dissolution of marriage shall be granted unless one of the following facts appears, which shall be pleaded generally: (a) The marriage is irretrievably broken.

would anybody be interested in doing illustrations for a fan project lyric book for the mountain goats? i’m doing a like zine feel- it’s rly just a passion project born of my love for all their songs and constantly annotating it lol.

i’m doing all black and white and easily printable but am not a great artist! just having fun, i’m working on all hail west texas right now

okay another follow up!

so basically i just love love love the mountain goats! and also the fans and the stories and everything. so my idea is a bit of a zine, done album by album, that holds the lyrics and also an accompanying fan piece. my original thought was art (preferably black and white so it can be printed easily by anyone who wants but rly anything) but if you have another idea like a personal story or reflection or anything im totally open to that!

and then i want to link a like free pdf or provide them for just the cost of printing/shipping to any fans, i might bring some to give out at their stop in my city. i’ll set up a discord or anyone interested should totally message me!

so many of these anti christ “born evil” son of the devil stories seem to be abt rejecting expectations and being true to urself and what u love and choosing ur destiny and yet none of them have been transgender! also they r all like. preteen boys. where r the transgender lesbians or whoever the fuck rising against ideas of ontological evil and seeing the good and love humanity and the world is possible of. ugh. ur gonna write a story about someone overcoming expectations and society and blah blah blah to find that they have been their true self this whole time and u rnt even going to make them a faggot???? crazy
