Does Fern go through a lot of physical changes, too? Did they have routines/regimens as an assassin that they don't get to keep up as the brainwashed herbalist? How do they feel about that once they've past the point of "needing" to be ensorcelled? They re-embrace some elements of their prior personality, do they do that with physical structure as well? Or, like with the longer hair, do they enjoy the lack of practical Need for that kind of upkeep?
Didn't have the chance to answer yesterday but I am Here now
cw for discussion of eating habits, weight and weight gain, fitness (and mind control/brainwashing)
They definitely put on some weight, which is a good thing for them because their eating habits before were kind of terrible, their mentor did not really teach them life skills alongside how to unalive people so their diet was generally nutritionally lacking. They also put on some weight because their lifestyle is a lot more relaxed - as an assassin they would have spent a lot of time between jobs on training. That's something they definitely don't do while brainwashed because they don't feel the urgency to maintain the level of physical performance which they felt was necessary both to survive and to succeed at their jobs. (It was never something they enjoyed, but viewed as absolutely necessary.) So as the herbalist they're a bit softer around the tummy area.
Because their muscles were built over years from a fairly young age, they don't lose much muscle tone, but because the mind control (and not bothering with any training as a result) goes on for months, their cardio wouldn't be quite as good. They aren't as fast/agile as they were either.
Once they're not ensorcelled anymore those are things they're embarrassed about especially at first, but it's nice to feel safe enough to not need to keep up their training. As a result it's not something they feel necessary to invest their time in. I think over time they would embrace the idea of being physically somewhat softer as well as metaphorically/emotionally softer. Both are somewhat connected in their mind.
Generally they like not having to keep up a strict training routine. They still have bodily strength, and while they're not in the same condition as before, I think they would have better endurance because of being overall healthier. As they gather some materials out in nature, they get a good bit of hiking in. They also climb buildings sometimes, because that's a valuable skill to keep up and it's nice to take in the view (and sometimes they want to be alone). But they're not doing pushups or whatever every day and if they had to run a long distance they'd get out of breath.
By the way I realised I have so much more conversation to share regarding Fern because the last bit of chat I posted here was two days ago and I haven't stopped.

I will answer the other ask I got later today! And I have answers in mind but not the time right this moment. The weather is nice now so I must get ready and then go outside and do mysterious offline activities.

Fern Picrew Storytelling Indulgence
I'm having fun

Fern who got caught trying to poison everyone again after the mind control spell wore off, and the hands of the cleric who casts the spell again:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Freshly bamboozled Fern mindlessly nuzzles against the cleric's hands afterwards because contact is nice
Fern the herbalist, deemed harmless enough to not need to be mind controlled any longer, and trying to figure out who they even are anymore if they no longer have any desire to get rid of the adventurers and return to their old life, suspecting their current contentment isn't real because they were brainwashed into it:
Tumblr media
Fern the herbalist, after a long time of being conflicted about it, having reached a point where they're (mostly) at peace and decided it's fine if they can't fully untangle whether their happiness in their current role is because they were under mind control previously, the deciding part is that they are happy:

Is it a little fucked that Fern's happy ending is being happy in the role they were brainwashed into? Yes, But. I prefer if there's a happy ending regardless.

More Fern stuff that won't make much sense without the previous context, especially because it skips over 95% of the parts about them struggling to resist being mind controlled, flip-flopping on whether to kill their captors, and then struggling to figure out who the fuck they are if they've come to like the role they were put in
cw for the weird and dysfunctional group dynamic of an adventuring group and their (formerly?) brainwashed healer
Prinx:
I like the group growing fond of the personality Fern shows more after they're certain Having A Personality won't result in being slapped with a mind control spell Snarky, haughty, possessive in some ways, caring but a bit cranky about it, embarrassed by but craving vulnerability, critically weak to affection
Kitty — Yesterday at 21:51 I love all of these things
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 21:51 It takes a lot of internal struggling for them to get to a place where they feel like they have a stable identity. They haven't forgotten what happened, but… They're happy anyway. I think their possessive and bossy impulses are a way of dealing with any lingering resentment and feeling more in control. [21:54] Like a skewed 'you wouldn't let me go so now I'm keeping you, you're mine.'
Kitty — Yesterday at 21:55 Yeee [21:56] "If this was for my own good, I'm going to make you prove it. Be good to me. Every hour of every day."
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 21:57 THIS [21:57] exactly [21:59] And also "don't you dare get hurt and make me worry, if it wasn't for all of you I wouldn't even think of worrying about anyone except myself" [22:02] Very much 'you decided how I should be, take some responsibility for it'
Kitty — Yesterday at 22:02 Yeah!! [22:03] Plugs nicely into the aspect of their pride, expecting the heroes to not just commit to what they've done, but to excel at it, even if it's to keep them like a pet
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 22:05 Ye!! The group can't just act like what they do doesn't affect how Fern feels (in many cases 'what they do' is get hurt in dangerous situations) [22:07] Fern replying to something like "well you should have thought of that before you decided to brainwash me" and 60% of the group winces a little
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 22:13 I think they get very pissed off when one of the group is gravely injured, all "who did this" and "how could you let this happen" and "I'll make whoever is responsible pay" The rest of the adventurers refuse to tell them who did it/how it happened because they're honestly being kind of scary [22:13] "What, are you afraid I'll 'relapse'? Decide I like killing more than healing again?"
Kitty — Yesterday at 22:16 I had the thought of what if when their resentment flares up and clashes with their implanted/accepted tenderness and care it feels bitter. What if it leaves a bad taste in their mouth. Like poison. [22:16] That feels good in my brain
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 22:20 Sometimes it's satisfying to express that bitterness and show their teeth a little, even if they feel bad afterwards [22:25] If it gets to be too much for them, they get tempted to go to the cleric to ask to be made to stop thinking for a while
(Prinx) — Yesterday at 22:27 I think the healthier thing to do would be to talk through the whole weird messy tangle of how they feel but I don't know how long it would take to reach the resolve to do that It's easier to ask to make the thoughts go away again [22:29] Gradually they try to hold back their bitter words as much as possible because the momentary satisfaction of it stops outweighing the hurt it seems to cause [22:31] They're a messsssss But they're trying their best

Chatlog with a friend and a partner about the villain character who gets mind controlled into being a helpful potion maker for a group of adventurers who definitely put the 'chaotic' in chaotic good
Contains brainwashing/mind control, mental conditioning, dubcon due to said mental conditioning, internal conflict
Plus praise related stuff, embarrassment, and a surprising amount of hand feeding, sexual tension but no sex until nearly the end
The former assassin-turned-herbalist character has a name now too, they're called Fern

Apropos of absolutely nothing, have you ever played Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? If not and you can put up with janky old rpgs you might like it. The story is perhaps best enjoyed unspoiled, so be careful if you check it out.
I'm intrigued as to the reason for the recommendation! Very mysterious, anon.
I've never played it, no. I think my tolerance for janky old rpgs is moderate, so I might give it a go sometime.
I feel like to my awareness there's stuff about the light and dark side of the Force, and some characters who can either be redeemed or not, but that's all I know based on the days when I used to read TVTropes instead of actually playing things.

Rotating the brainwashed assassin character in my mind
Or rather the character brainwashed to no longer be an assassin
Amoral and selfish character forced by magic to be a good person, eventually starts to like it enough that the magic isn´t needed anymore
It's a lot of fun to think about a character who has been forced to change but who once the force compelling them is gone, still doesn't want to change back to who they were, because it's more than mind control, it's deeper, it's conditioning and habit and instinct now (except in this scenario it's to use their abilities to benefit others and care what happens to other people, instead of for something nefarious)

Have been going absolutely wild on my discord server since yesterday about the "villain brainwashed by heroes" idea
Inventing a whole scenario where a group of well-intentioned heroes in a high fantasy setting decide the best thing to do with an assassin/poisoner they apprehended is for the group's cleric to use mind magic on the assassin and make them placid and obedient and helpful so their skill at herbalism (e.g. low tech chemistry) can be put to use making healing potions instead
Extremely juicy, the conversation has gotten long enough that I will probably need to upload it to my neocities site if I want to share it
