Quartet at the Ballet
Ok, can I just tell you how much I love this number.
1: Just the overall vibe of the scene is incredible, Anya’s dress, Dmitri knowing she’s Anastasia, the talent of the ballet dancers, THE MUSIC. ITS ALL AMAZING.
2: The ballet mimics who is singing.
Anya = Odette: Female protaganist. In love with Dima/Prince Seigfried.
Dima = Prince Seigfried: male protaganist. In love with Odette/Anya
Dowager Empress = Other swans: Family, background.
Gleb = Von Rothbar: Male antagonist.
ITS AMAZING AND SO CLEVER
3: It is a major turning point in the view of all the characters and conflict.
All of the characters are fighting internal battles during this scene.
Anya: worried about her future and past, wondering if the empress will believe her and desperately wanting her family back.
Dima: having doubts about the plan, partially recognizing his love for Anya and having conflicts about using her.
Dowager Empress: Sees someone that looks like Anastasia (anya) refusing to hope and believe that it is her because of her past disappointments and heartbreaks.
Gleb: Doubting killing Anastasia, doesn’t want to do it but has to because of obligation to mother Russia.
Overview: THIS SCENE IS A MASTERPIECE, CLEVER AND THE BEST THING EVER.
