Billie Eilish - “Xanny” / “When the Party’s Over” / “Wish You Were Gay”
Dave Grohl, on Billie Eilish: “My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish. And what I’m seeing happening with my daughters is the same thing that happened to me at their age. My daughters are listening to Billie Eilish and they’re becoming themselves through her music. She totally connects to them. So we went to go see her play at the Wiltren, and that connection that she has with her audience is the same thing that was happening with Nirvana in 1991. The people in the audience know every word.”
I get it.

The Avalanches - Colours
Remember 2000? Back when the new millennium made everything uncertain? Back when Napster, Audiogalaxy, and Limewire were all the rage? Back when copyright protection could not stymie the explosion of digital downloads?
A release like The Avalanches’ seminal Since I Left You made so much sense then. Since I Left You was an absolute sonic collage and was rightfully heralded as an instant classic. The Avalanches could take what seemed like a thousand samples and turn these into gorgeous, if not restless, farragos of sound. And underneath this quilt was naked emotion: “Since I left you / I found the world so blue.”
Fast forward to 2016: The Avs are finally set to release record number two in less than a month. Our first sampling, “Colours,” is less a collage and more an organic, swirling, magical ride. This may be the sound of maturity, or progress. Or the brick wall of copyright. But they have not lost the power to tap into sentiment and transport you back to a different time. Perhaps, back to 2000.

The Coral - “Miss Fortune”
By all accounts, The Coral = “Dreaming of You, at least to me. One great little pop song and nothing more. But then it appears I missed a minor masterpiece in 2010′s Butterfly House. So I have to check that out, too.
But wow, when did these guys turn in Echo and the Bunnymen 2.0? This is fantastic stuff. One of my favorites of 2016 so far.

K’s Choice - “Cannonball” (Damien Rice Cover)
You know those times when an artist completely owns a cover? Think Ryan Adams’ “Wonderwall” or Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” That’s what this cover is all about.
K’s Choice lend their brand of fragility which made “Not an Addict” such a tasty 90s hit to this Damien Rice cover. And they need nothing more than a guitar and a glockenspiel. Absolutely beautiful.

The Go! Team - “The Scene Between”
I’ve always liked The Go! Team. In a scene of cynics, they burst with unbridled joy. “The Scene Between” captures the rapture of a gospel choir and the controlled chaos of careering drums and harpsichord.
It’s the thrill of waiting for a car crash to happen — and the exhilaration of escaping unscathed.
And man, that crazy VHS-quality music video.

Blur - The Universal
Still my favorite band of all time and this, their greatest song.
The whole crowd singing at the end of this performance literally gave me goosebumps. And was Damon Albarn crying?
But even if this was released 19(!) years ago, the sentiment remains relevant. We are a generation overcome by inertia, and the best most of us can do is hope that tomorrow will be luckier and that it really, really, really could happen.

Tears for Fears - "My Girls" (Animal Collective cover)
Finally, the song that answers the (not so) age-old question: what happens when Animal Collective and Tears for Fears sire a child?

Cattski - Drunk
Time for some local flavour. Here's a catchy tune my and Jill's friend introduced to us. Cattski laments, "you only love me when you're drunk." This is an edgy, but melodic take on a sentiment quite a few people have felt in their lives.

The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset
I keep on saying that Waterloo Sunset is the best pop song ever written. There’s no easy way to tell why we like certain songs. To my mind though, one recurring factor is the songwriter’s attention to detail. And that exactly is what makes Waterloo Sunset special. It is about the mundane: lovers meet in Waterloo station, two people among many. It is about that moment we gaze outside our windows and notice beauty in simple serenity. This song is about the way we construct paradise and project it to the environment surrounding us. I realized how much I love this song after I revisited my favorite city in the world, New York. And many of us know that feeling that crashes as soon as we touch down back home. Then it hits us: our favorite cities are such because our relationships with them are fleeting and ephemeral. Then three days, four days pass. Soon, we fathom that traffic-laden Manila is our charming little Waterloo Sunset after all, offering a paradise we barely see in the rush of banality.

Orange Peels - You’re so Clever
What’s the catchiest song you’ve ever heard? This is mine.
The funny thing is, I don’t know anything about the Orange Peels. And there’s nothing much about them online. This is pop in a vacuum — a sprightly slice of indie sunshine that has no other purpose but to make an unassuming listener smile.
Of course, this is unless “you’re so clever / I just have to let you know” is secretly sarcastic. And this has been bugging me for years. No use trying to figure out what as-of-now-nameless singer intended, though. This is pop in a vacuum. - Glenn
