Everett had been watching the CapitolTV livestream as Lysander gave his speech. “For the time being, as Head Gamemaker of the Hunger Games, I thank you for cooperation, loyalty and openness. It’s not simple, nor easy, but it is a necessity.” His was a bit bored by the proceedings, this fake District Thirteen, the show of it all.
When real District Thirteen’s people were all sitting in their homes, anticipating the start of the Games. Guilt wracked him all over again. That he’d played a role in destabilizing Thirteen, that now Knox and Konner were headed into God only knew what — or Lysander Vultur only knew what, what was the difference when it came to the Games?
The bomb had shocked him, the feed had been cut off, whole moments had passed before the rumors started being posted, before his phone was lighting up that Lysander was dead, that many more may be too, that the bomb may have been Thirteen rebels—
He switched over to the Games feed on his phone as he left the second floor, entering the elevator and only half-watching the launch, knowing that he needed to get himself to the sponsors lounge and secure funding now for Knox and Konner, before more might be revealed.

Everett probably couldn’t have been more surprised by what Cade said than if he’d said he’d grown an elephant tail. He blinked at him, his drink stilled in his hand. “You... you did?” he asked. He knew Cade knew how to make coffee, for himself, but he couldn’t imagine him in that kind of job. Food service. Hell, he couldn’t even imagine himself working there.
Then the second part of what he’d said sank in. Year-round.
That meant living in the Capitol.
Year-round.
Not living with Everett, leaving him alone in Two in that big fucking house that he’d worked so hard to make feel like home. And yet it hadn’t felt like home, not even a bit, until Cade moved in.
“Year round?” As if to clarify that ‘year round’ meant the same thing for both of them.
Tumblr media
“I quit,” Cade blurted over his drink. He’d come down to the second floor to close out the night before launch with Everett, acting as though it was a casual thing, but in truth he’d been anxious to tell him all day. He’d handed in his resignation with his final interview outfits– barely holding together– and went directly downstairs to then hand in his application to Capitol Coffee. In part, he was sick of lying. He was sick of trying to do a job he couldn’t do and was not qualified to do. He didn’t even really like fashion beyond what it could do for him at a party. More than that, though, he knew the longer he leeched off of people, the more dangerously close he drew to the precipice of being abandoned when their kindness dried up.
He had to leave before he got left. “I got a job making coffee downstairs,” he continued, unable to look Everett in the eye quite yet. “Year-round.”

Everett was trying everything he could, tugging on every thread, to secure funding in advance for Thirteen’s tributes. He wanted to do a good job in his new position, and that meant being fast. If his tributes suffered injuries in the Bloodbath, he wanted to be able to send them bandages, medicine. If they didn’t manage to snag a weapon, he’d want to send them one.
“Hey, got a minute for another tribute pitch?” he asked, sitting down next to Prue in the sponsor’s lounge.

TASK 012 // SUPPORT PLANS
Everett will support the tributes from Thirteen. He likes Konner well enough, and though he and Knox may not be the best of friends, he secretly feels he has a debt to repay for his spy work in Thirteen which played a role in the annexation and thus led to Konner and Knox being Reaped.

Jeannie faintly nodded. “I can do that. Alder and I seem to have a lot in common these days anyway,” she bitterly chuckled. “Who else do you think could be good with them? The tributes from Nine, maybe?”
Right, the Reaping. He didn’t know if he should tell her he was sorry she was Reaped or what. Was that an appropriate thing to say? He was fucking glad she wasn’t his tribute. As rocky as things had been between them, it was good to have her out of danger’s way. Stabbing aside. “Yeah, they’re a solid pair and ours could be. Should be.” He shrugged. He didn’t know if it’d work out like that when the time came.

Chip’s shoulders tensed as he focused on the zipper of his backpack, suddenly having some trouble with the simple action. Finally, he got it to give so he could put his earbuds away. “N-No one n-needs bad pr-press,” he reasoned, and looked up at Everett with a weak shrug. “B-But th-the Gazette has bills to pay.”
Tumblr media
.
Everett tilted his head, allowing that, but then said, “I think my tributes are underdogs and outsiders enough, surely the Gazette would just be hitting below the belt.” Not that the Gazette ever gave a shit about that. He still felt angry about what they’d done to him before his own Games.

“Living underground without sunlight or half decent food makes you depressed? What a surprise.” It was harsh, but maybe he was afraid Everett might grow too soft to it. That he’d abandon him too for better things, Cade had always only been a step along the way to people’s various destinations, Everett was departing too. “I can’t imagine they’re any fun there, and no offense, I don’t think those tributes have a great shot. I don’t get why you’d take this on.”
Tumblr media
.
Everett snorted a little, but turned serious again when the tributes’ chances were called into question. He was a bit sensitive about it, perhaps because he felt there was truth there. “I... I think they have a better chance than you think,” he said, a lame excuse when what he really wanted was to spill it, to tell Cade that he felt fucking guilty about his role in Thirteen being annexed, in the Capitol using his information to help take control, to break down Thirteen’s hold on their own resources and grid.

“Good question.” This was actually intriguing to him, something to nerd about. “If I were to go classics, the 75th, the 96th and… the 16th. If I were to go for mine, the 120th, the 122nd – sorry – and the 124th.”
Tumblr media
.
Everett shrugged a bit. “I’ll take the suggestions for next time,” he said, “though if you think I’m gonna suggest my tributes watch the Games I died in, you should think again. It probably won’t inspire much confidence.”

“Right,” she huffed. “I suppose it wouldn’t go over too well if you did it this time.” Jeannie didn’t know all the details about what was going on between Alder and Everett, but she knew meeting the person that killed you couldn’t have been nice. She clenched her jaw and averted her gaze as she remembered her own knife sinking into his chest not long ago.
“Yeah, probably not,” he said, “although I could always chat with Ash or Benny, you can chat with Alder.” He shrugged a little. “I do think they could be good allies.”

Chip glanced side to side, as if he was really expecting to see one of Thirteen’s tributes appear. “I-Isn’t th-this usually when they’re getting har-rassed by stylists?”
Tumblr media
.
“Oh.” He blinked. “Yeah, maybe.” He was not very good at this, but then, tribute wrangling was technically Allard’s job. “As long as they’re accounted for and not committing murder or something, I’m fine. We don’t need bad press.”

“Odd selection. The last three weren’t so fundamentally different,” he weighed in, actually comparing from all angles. It was weird to think of arenas in comparison to each other. “There are stronger examples, I think.”

Everett felt like he’d failed a test he hadn’t known he was taking. “Well what Games would you have assigned then?” He felt like to a certain extent they were all the same, but he’d never had the Career fanaticism for them.

“Good,” Cade breathed out, leaning back in his chair.  “Because I don’t think I’d follow your ass to Thirteen. I’d bother you just about anywhere else, but I draw the line at joining the mole people.”
“They’re not mole people,” Everett said, part defensive, part protective. “But yeah, I don’t think I could live there long-term. When I spend too long there I just get like. Depressed, you know?” Which wasn’t a huge difference from normal life, but at least in Two he could get depressed with sunshine.

TASK 010 // NATURAL PHENOMENA
Conch shell
Ok, you're probably thinking this isn't so phenomenal but you are wrong. You can pour music into people's ears! How extraordinary is that! You're a bit small and compared to the other phenomena you go unnoticed most of the time. Yet, you are much loved and cherished and stored in people's memories. The sole fact that you have the gift of echoing the past is amazing. Memories are a big part of everyone and you are able to generate laughter and help others smile. Although remember to not stay still, the past is the past and no matter how dazzling, you have to move forward and create new memories.

Everett was looking for his tributes, either one, he wasn’t picky. He felt like he was failing as a mentor with them and only had a short while to try to rectify it. He shook his head. “No, no, you’re fine,” he said. “Just lost track of my tributes.”
Chip’s eyes were closed as he lied on the bench in the garden. The setting sun felt warm, and the smell of the flowers only added to the peaceful setting. Blasting through his headphones was a song that was a mix of heavy metal and rap. It was only when he sensed a shadow pass the light that he cracked an eye open. “Sh-Should I go?” he asked, pulling an earbud out of his right ear so he could hear. “I-I can go.”

Knox sort of just rolled her eyes and shook her head. “No worries, I won’t underestimate a lumberjack, miner, or fish.” Because that was comparable to a soldier, right? “Which tribute do you think is Konner and I’s biggest competition?” She asked him curiously, wondering who had caught his eye.
Tumblr media
Her sarcastic response just annoyed him further, but at least she was engaging with him now, asking a question. “Well, the Careers of course,” he said. “One, Two, and Four. I’d also be wary of the pair from Seven, just because a pair can be pretty powerful in there if they play it right.”
