Breaking News! ESAs are Valid!
Thatās right, you heard it here, folks! Emotional Support Animals are a valid and important method of coping with disabling mental illnesses!
Many people compare ESAs to service dogs and say āESAs arenāt task trained. They arenāt as important as my service dog.ā or āESAs donāt get to go into public, and they arenāt as well trained, so they donāt save lives like my service dog does.ā or even āThatās just an emotional support animal, unlike my task trained service dog.ā
Itās true that ESAs arenāt task trained. Itās true that they donāt have protection under the ADA and donāt go into public spaces so they donāt need intensive Public Access training. But it is NOT true that they are less important.
If I need a reason to get out of bed in the morning, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need structure and habit in my day, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need someone to snuggle and be sad with, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need someone to talk to, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need a best friend, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need a wingman to make me feel brave, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
If I need to play and be more active, I need an ESA and not a service dog.
Many service dog handlers will read this and say āMy service dog does that too!ā Congrats! Your service dog is also an emotional support animal!
Emotional support animals are different from service dogs. But they are not less than service dogs.
Emotional support animals save lives.
Emotional support animals are just as valid and important as service dogs.

gentle reminder
if you are being hard on yourself over a decision youāve made in the past because you feel it was a poor decision, just remember that you made the best decision you could for who you were at that moment, and with what information you had available to you - try your best to be forgiving and kind to yourself, and look towards the decisions you have to make, not the ones youāve already made

Emotional Support Animal:
-are allowed on airplanes.
-are allowed in housing where a homeowner/association doesnt normally allow animals.
-there is NO certification and websites advertising these are fake. You need a note from your doctor for housing and transportation.
-there is NO vest or outfit and creating one in an attempt to seem official is illegal.
-there is NO reason for this animal to be out and about in public (besides dogs at parks etc taking a walk).
Service Animal:
-are legally trained to perform a specific task in assistance of their companion.
-are legally allowed in most public and private spaces (excluding places like kitchens of restaurants, operation rooms, and anywhere they pose a threat to others or health/safety).
-sometimes wear a vest/outfit stating āservice animalā or ādo not interactā
-must be on a leash or tether unless a persons disability doesnāt allow control of the animal that way.
-owners of an establishment are allowed to ask you to remove the animal IF it is not housebroken or is out of the owners control.
Questions you CAN ask:
Youāre only allowed to ask this if it isnāt obvious why the animal is needed. Youāre not allowed to ask the persons disability.
āIs this animal required because of a disability?ā
āWhat work or task is this animal trained to perform?ā
If you bring an ESA into a public/private establishment wearing a fake vest and claiming to be a service animal, that is ILLEGAL!
Not only does this behavior make others with ESAs look bad, it makes it hard for people with ACTUAL Service Animals because people are constantly expecting a rowdy and untrained companion animal.
*disclaimer: both are āservice animalsā. I have an ESA. She is a rat. She does not go in public. She lives with me at home and in the case that Iād need to fly somewhere or move, sheād be able to come with. Thatās it.
There is no argument on whether or not you āneedā an ESA. If your doctor has approved an ESA, thatās great. Do not bring it in public. Do not abuse the rights given to SERVICE ANIMALS and not your pet.

Note from Mom:
No one has seen my posts yet but before anyone does I would like to say a few things about emotional support animals.
1. They are NOT service animals
Meaning they are not all access
Please never try to pass off an esa as a service animal. That is both illegal and immoral. It hurts the people who really have service animals
2. You need a presciption to have an ESA
Pretending your pet is an esa to get onto an airplane without the fee is rude to people who legitimately need their animals for their comfort and safety.
Not only that but many people now are out for people with real emotional support animals because of people who use them for publicity stunts.
3. Please do not send rude messages like Iāve seen sent to other ESA blogs.
Iām sure 99.9999% of the people on here with an ESA blog are legit. People who want to get on planes for free probably donāt feel the need to blog about it.
Also back to the prescription point, anyone with a legitimate ESA has a legitimate emotional difficulty and does not need more stress.
Personally I just got out of the hospital for psychiatric reasons and definitely would prefer only positive messages.
Thank you for listening!
