shadow rubbed at her wrist, letting out a deep breath as she rested her forehead against her knee. “i don’t know how i got stuck, but i can’t move it and it’s making my back feel like it’s on fire,” her voice cracked.

Ember was trying to move the wooden beam that had fallen from the ceiling and was trapping Shadow’s foot, she wasn’t the fittest person in the world, so getting it out of the way would require some work. But after some time she had managed to do it, “Now that we moved that out of the way, we just have to get out of here… or wait for rescue.”

Despite her feelings toward her parents, she didn’t want to be the one to turn her siblings against them. They needed to figure out how they felt about all that themselves. She’d be here if they decided to run, though. “How about you?”

“Pretty much the same,” she knew and understood why Ivy pulled away from their family, their parents weren’t the easiest people to deal with... “but I only work a few days a week, so I have a lot of free time, which kinda sucks,” Ember didn’t have a lot of friends, so not having to go to work meant she’d be staying at home all day, and she hated it.

her husband had just text her to let her know that he and nova were in the parking lot. ten seconds later, the ground was shaking - which she thought might have just been the baby throwing a fit, because their house shook whenever nova got upset enough. however, she quickly realized it couldn’t have been the baby, because this was much stronger than anything her daughter could do. as soon as she realized the haunted house’s ceiling was crumbling, which meant some support beams would probably come loose, shadow started to back up, but was harshly halted when she fell to the ground, landing the wrong way on her wrist due to her foot getting stuck. “son of a bitch!” she snapped, immediately bringing her wrist to her chest and holding it with her other hand. a whine left her throat when she heard the other’s voice. “i don’t know… i’m in pain, but i don’t think i’m dying or anything.”

“You probably just sprained your wrist, it’s going to be fine,” she was trying to keep calm, but the truth is, she was terrified, “I’m worried about your foot though, I’ll try and get it out, okay?”

What was supposed to be a fun ride at the fair suddenly turned into panic. As soon as the ground started shaking, people started screaming and running, but soon enough the ceiling was caving in, Ember realized she was stuck and finally scared of that haunted house.
“Shit,” she was getting nervous and kept looking around for a way out when she noticed that there was someone else there with her, “At least I’m not alone in this hole, are you okay?”

She couldn’t help but smile. It was hard for people to get along with Ember’s over-excitement, she was all sunshine and rainbows and people didn’t get that, but Julian did, “So, what do you do when you're not in town festivals?”

Julian gripped her hand and gave it a firm shake, a serious look on his face, “Very nice to meet you as well.” Unable to maintain his poker face he laughed again. It was a weirdly formal moment. “Is it too forward to redirect our adventure to rides before food or do you have people you’re trying to meet up with? I’m trying to ride the ferris wheel but riding it alone seems sad.”

“Sure, I’ll take you up on the ferris wheel,” she had barely arrived at the festival and hadn’t gone to any of the rides, “As long as we’re buying that ice cream afterwards.”

“Well, I had some ice cream and I tried some candy corn, totally overrated by the way,” a twenty-two-year-old that had never tried candy corn, blame that on her parents, they were way too strict in that area, “And now I wanted to try that apple pie, what do you say?” she suggested, “Oh, and I’m buying.”

Shit eating grin posted up on his face, Julian followed her as she started walking. “Hey now. I said I’d pay.” He joked playfully, almost stumbling when she stopped short. “We have not. Julian. Glad you brought that up because I’d be like half way though my ice cream before I’d even ask myself, ‘who the fuck is this girl?’”

She let out a sweet and welcoming smile, “Very nice to meet you, Julian,” as she held out her hand for him to shake. Julian seemed to be Ember’s complete opposite, and as people say, opposites attract, she had just met him, but she had already felt a good connection, they were going to be friends.

“Interesting name choice, I just call her mom.” His grin grew wide. He was mostly joking but at the same time not even remotely. His brows furrowed as she made her last comment. “That’s some bullshit.” He realized he may have been a bit aggressive in the comment, so he resorted to making another joke.
“Don’t apologize for that. Apologize for real shit. Like for not buying the nice man who found your money an ice cream so he’s gonna offer to buy you yours.” He pointed toward the booth, “Candy corn? Or is ice cream not your style?”

She laughed at his joke, and as he went on, she started getting more comfortable “Okay, deal, I’ll buy you an ice cream,” she started walking ahead to the booth, then she stopped and turned around, “We haven’t been properly introduced yet, have we? I’m Ember, by the way.”

Ember hadn’t seen her sister in so long, and truth be told, she missed her. They weren’t that close but they were family and she loved Ivy. So seeing her at the festival made her day better.
“Gosh! Ivy, hey,” she barely knew what to say, “well to be honest with you, the only plan I had for today was to eat my weight in sugar, and I’m pretty sure we can do that together, so...” she let out a big smile, she was truly happy, “what do you want to do? I’m open to suggestions!”

He wondered how so many words could come out of someone so seemingly sober. “I’m glad I could help. Checks off my ‘do one good thing’ resolution off my New Year’s list.”

“Not everyone would have done that,” she smiled back. It wasn’t easy to find someone in this town that would do that, and even drunk, Julian seemed like a nice person. Ember liked him, but then again, she likes everybody, “I bet that you’re going to do many nice things before New Year, you seem like a good person.”

Julian took a drink out of his water bottle, his nose scrunching up taste. Vodka had been a shit idea. As he meandered between booths heading for the nearest food vendor, Julian thought about the bottle of tequila sitting at home. Mistakes had been made and he could only blame himself. Shoving the bottle into one of the pockets in his jacket, Julian fished out some cash. He thought he had decided when he saw the sign for candy corn ice cream and changed directions.
A person passed by him and Julian’s eye caught the sight of money fluttering to the ground. He snatched it and turned to follow the person. Tapping them on the shoulder he spoke, “this place is too expensive to be dropping money.”

This was the happiest time of year for Ember (and no, it wasn’t Christmas yet), she loved the decoration, the food stands, the costumes and even watching two people dressed up in costumes, that were practically inspired by a kid’s cartoon, having a drunk argument, everything was fun for her and the weather had just turned into a pleasant breeze, not so cold that you need one-hundred layers of clothing and not so hot, it was just right.
She had just arrived and decided to buy an ice cream cone. She was enjoying everything about this day when she heard someone call her name, “Oh my God, thank you. I swear if I had gone with the other costume I had in mind this wouldn’t have happened,” She then gave some thought into her other choice and she realized that it had way less fabric and consequently, less pocket space, “Or maybe it would have… but anyways, I’m not used to not carrying a purse, or at least having a pocket… but seriously, thank you so much.”
