phil has always been funny but he is goddamn HILARIOUS when he’s not trying to avoid dirty jokes. the man is rabid. this is everything

in the first volume of throam there's an inherit power imbalance between ryan and brendon; ryan is technically brendon's boss and can fire him anytime he pleases. this does happen, even though brendon "quits" as well (ryan does offer him his job back but brendon refuses to take it).

in volume two, we start off with a seemingly equal playing field but we find out soon enough that there's a massive wealth gap between the two of them. ryan is no longer brendon's employer (until later on) but he uses his wealth (and connections) to provide brendon with opportunities he wouldn't normally get (studio time and getting brendon a record deal). when ryan uses his position to employ both brendon and shane, it's where we land back to where the books started. even though brendon signs a record deal by the end of the book and is in a better financial state than by the end of the first book, ryan still has power over him and is able to fire him.

HOWEVER, it's only in the last book that we get an actual equal playing field. brendon is doing financially well on his own and ryan has no real way to "fire" him. they're both musicians and only start working together by their own accord. in the last volume, they're finally equal and that's why they can get together.

anyways, that's just my take on the power imbalance in throam.
