Emerging artists display work in fine arts graduate show in Brockville
BROCKVILLE – St. Lawrence College Creative & Visual Arts – Fine Arts 2013 graduates are pleased to present Strange Beings, an exhibit of their artwork at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery on the Brockville campus from April 12-25, 2013. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 1-3pm.
This unique show will exhibit the art of seven female artists: Chris Chrysler, Brittney Derbyshire, Tasha Hamelin, Paige Lee, Dee Moore, Kayla Rawlins and Shawna Stevens. Working in a wide variety of styles, mediums, and sizes, the artists have demonstrated their creative abilities through sculpture, painting, photography, printmaking, and mixed media techniques. From the traditional to the contemporary, the minute to monumental, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
“This exhibit is the culmination of the students’ dedication and passion over the past two years. The diversity of each artist’s work has evolved into a unique personal style which will be on display in the gallery,” stated Andrew Hamilton, professor and program coordinator of the two year Creative & Visual Arts – Fine Arts diploma program at St. Lawrence College.
“The best way for me to express myself is through art,” said Paige Lee, an exhibiting artist and Creative & Visual Arts – Fine Arts graduate. “My work is really a creative outlet and having it displayed in a state-of-the-art gallery validates my career path and it introduces all of us as professional artists to the world.”
  About the Gallery
The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery is a state-of-the-art community art gallery located at the front atrium of the Brockville campus of St. Lawrence College and is a focus for the visual arts for Brockville and the larger Eastern Ontario area. Creation of the gallery was made possible by the generous bequest from the Estate of Marianne van Silfhout, a graduate of the Fine Arts program at St. Lawrence College, and other contributors to the St. Lawrence Foundation.

YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE IS NOT A WEBSITE
Your Facebook Page is Not a Website.
We all love Facebook – it is a great place to promote your business. However, it is best used in combination with a real, hosted website. If you are relying just on social networks (like Facebook) for all your customer interactions, you are missing some indispensable benefits, which only a dedicated site can offer
Design Control
You do not have a say in how Facebook looks and works, and as we have seen recently, social networks can make sweeping changes to your profile, which you cannot control. With your very own website, you can create and control a web design that looks as good as your business is.
Customer Relationships
When you have your own website, you own the relationship with your customers. When they sign up to your newsletter or buy your products, you are the steward of important information like email addresses and phone numbers. This way you can always stay in touch with your customers even if everybody abandons Facebook for the next cool thing.
User Experience
Most social networks give you a one-page profile on a site full of millions of distractions. In fact, studies have shown that your customers may only actually see 15% of the updates you post on social networks. Facebook wants users to click on ads for smartphones, laptops, and blow dryers. What do you want your customers to do? On your website, you are in charge.
Your Own Dot Com
Building a website is like building a home on the web, you pick your domain name and this your address to the world. This is where you should send your Facebook customers when you want to interact with them on your own terms. You can collect email addresses, nurture relationships through blog posts, and sell your products and services from your site. Build a stunning site where you can have complete control.

PROFESSIONAL INTERACTIONS 101
How you deal with adversity and conflict tells a lot about you as a person and is a direct reflection on your business. Make no mistake that in every aspect of business, conflicts will arise, whether with customers who are unhappy, suppliers who do not deliver services or competitor interactions. Maintaining a professional and even approach can be difficult especially since you have an emotional attachment to your business.
It can be very tempting to get on Facebook or Twitter, go off on a half-cocked tirade, and spill your guts. While this may make you feel better, it only projects a negative image to friends, clients and potential clients. Constant complaining in public forums only makes you look unstable and ill equipped to handle your emotions. It also makes your business look unprofessional. The general rule is to hold off on posting anything at least an hour after something makes you angry. Take the time to think about the issue and how to deal with the things in a professional manner. The best thing is to hold off on posting anything at all and to work through the issue to a positive resolution by communicating with the other person or organization. You also need to be very careful about what you say as your diatribe on Facebook may actually be considered slander or libel. Even if you delete the comments it does not mean that the other party has not taken a screen shot of the comments that could come back to haunt you.
We also see this manifest itself in email communications. How many times have you responded to an email that made you angry and then regretted it two seconds later? Email conversations can be misinterpreted so easily. Many times, we try to interpret tone and emotion from an email and that is wrong. If you are not sure about the tone of something, take the time and pick up the phone. I guarantee you that the results will be that you misunderstood the tone of the communication. The same thing applies with immediate responses by email, before replying with a swear word laced reply, take the time and cool off. You should never swear in emails, there is nothing more unprofessional. You never know when these emails will surface again or be forwarded to someone else. Once it is in cyber space it is there forever.
In general, very few issues cannot be solved by effective communication with another party. If you are wrong, admit it. If your approach is correct and they are wrong, they will admit it. If you are not sure, ask for clarification. The most important thing to do is to create and foster open channels of communication. Deal with the issue directly with the person or organization. People do not want to hear you air your dirty laundry in public, they expect the companies they deal with to be professional. If you are not sure, ask yourself what would a big corporation such as Apple or Samsung do? I can guarantee you that neither CEO will be on Facebook swearing and complaining about life, customers or competition...
