On Harry Potter's self-esteem

Sometimes Harry envies Draco for his unbreakable self-esteem. Yes, of course, the blonde has his own fears and things he’s embarrassed for. Yet nothing can shake Draco’s self-esteem. He likes how he looks. Draco is Draco, nothing more, nothing less.

Sometimes Harry stands in front of the mirror for ages, dissecting his reflection: brows - (too) bushy, lips - (too) thin, height - (too) average…the list goes on. In his head, he hears “ugly thing”, “look at you”, “laughable”, “nobody wants you”, all said in Vernon’s and Petunia’s voices. How can Draco like him?

So sometimes Draco makes it his mission to kiss every inch of Harry’s skin, drowning him in compliments, rewriting the broken record that was implanted in Harry’s head by that nightmare of a family.

With time, when looking in the mirror Harry starts seeing nothing but himself. Harry.

hc that the first person Draco told about his Big Fat Crush on Harry Potter was Pansy, and her immediate reaction was to say "we should pretend to be going out so he'll notice you" and guess what? it worked, because she's a genius.

I mean look at this. It has to be seen to be believed.

The first time they go out in the Muggle world, they go dancing.

The lights inside are vibrant and tacky. There are too many people. Draco doesn’t know how to dance to this music, so he just jumps, and Harry jumps with him, threading their hands together, pulling Draco closer by his t-shirt. They’re sweaty and a little bit out of breath, and it’s perfect the way it is.

They don’t drink much, but it still feels like they’re wasted thanks to the sheer novelty of the experience and the breathtaking freedom of being anonymous. No one gives a fuck about them, so they can dance and kiss and not think about a single other thing.

What an absolutely underrated thing—to be able to be yourself.

Even if the entire populace thrust their fingers at Harry and laughed at him for this sudden yield to affection, he'd continue all the same, and perhaps he'd even hope that Draco would laugh at him too, so he could marvel at the sight.
