In Kim’s Nightmare, the part where Chris yells “Kim I’m sorry” is the most heartbreaking thing to ever be in a musical. He really does love her, and he wanted so badly to save her. He got her the papers and told her to wait so he could call her, and it took John punching him in the face and taking Chris on the helicopter for him to leave Kim. When he realized he couldn’t save her, he wanted to stay with her. That last cry for her really shows his pain in leaving her alone in Vietnam, making it even more heartbreaking when Kim believes he didn’t love her at all after she meets Ellen.
