Hi, please free to ignore( huge fan of your metas btw)
What are your thoughts on Peter pettigrew? In swm we saw him fanboying over james to being responsible for his death. Just because he was afraid or he never really loved his friends. Many people say James and Sirius treated him shitty thats why he betrayed. Some even say he was just a tag along. Please share your thoughts.
First of all, thank you!
(also, unless they are rude, I don't ignore any questions, it might just take me two years to answer)
Tumblr media
Peter Pettigrew
My very controversial opinion on Peter is that I love him (as a character).
To me, Peter is one of those characters who represent how Rowling's clear lack of self-awareness as a person translates in her work into her being unable to recognize her strengths as a writer. The majority of the most interesting things she comes up with are not the ones she focuses on.
And that's the case for Peter Pettigrew, who might be the Marauder with the most interesting story.
It's way too easy to reduce him to a coward as the author seems to want you to believe. And even claiming he didn't love his friends is a flattening of his character.
You can have a tendency to be influenced by peer pressure all you want but you don't become an unregistered animagus to help someone if you don't love the friend you are doing that for and you don't have a bit of courage (especially considering how long the whole thing was and that he wasn't particularly talented). He risked extremely severe consequences on his body due to the possibility of the process going wrong and he risked Azkaban for being unregistered.
That's fundamentally the opposite behavior of the one he later has with the Potters.
I also think it's important to point out how Remus is not a close relative (father, son, brother) and how the help Peter provides is not essential to Remus' survival, it's emotional comfort. The lack of necessity of the animagus matter and the easily cancellable bond with Remus increase the braveness and love of Peter's act (in contrast for example with something like what Narcissa does with her son by lying to Voldemort).
I think Peter's story is the one of someone who lost his courage, not the one of a person who never had it.
Doesn't this also make it so much more delicious how his downfall is caused by the return of a glimpse of honor?
I do agree with the fact that in SWM, James and Sirius don't treat him particularly well, especially Sirius, but I don't think they are that aware of it, especially James. They are a bit crude, and they are arrogant. They are two bright posh 16yo guys in a boarding school in the 70s. I don't expect from them a particularly high level of sensitivity in how they talk to people, especially to someone they take for granted knows to be their friend. Sirius is probably more aware of it, but I believe James to be quite unaware of himself at this point in the timeline. This is before his maturation really kicks in, his whole interaction with Lily shows a lack of self-awareness in how he talks to people (we know Lily turns him into a bit of an idiot, the problem is that he doesn't seem to be aware of it). Sirius on the other hand seems a lot more self-aware than James. A lot of people are not going to like what I'm about to say but: James is canonically a better person than Sirius.
And yet, it is abundantly clear that both James and Sirius love Peter.
James gives into Peter's hands his own life and the ones of his wife and son. Sirius gives in Peter's hands the lives of the family he chose.
In the Shrieking Shack, under all the pain Sirius has for the death of James and Lily, it is evident that there's also the pain that comes from the betrayal of a friend.
"THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED!" roared Black. "DIED RATHER THAN BETRAY YOUR FRIENDS, AS WE WOULD HAVE DONE FOR YOU!" - Chapter 19, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
Lily herself is very attached to Peter, in her letter to Sirius, she calls him Wormy (how cute is that?). And, let's remember that she too puts her life and the ones of her husband and son in Peter's hands.
It's too easy to say Peter was just a tagalong, that they didn't love him. It incredibly diminishes the pain of his act.
I also would like to point out that Peter isn't stupid. He was a double agent, he managed to frame Sirius by using in his favor people’s low opinion of his skills (and Remus and Sirius' rocky relationship). James, Sirius, and Remus might have thought of themselves as smarter than Peter but I don't think they actually believed him to be stupid. Considering who the Marauders are, their knowing how good of a liar, and how cunning Peter could be, would be a perfect explanation of why they became friends in the first place.
Does this mean they all loved Peter but Peter only loved Remus out of his friends?
We can't really be sure of his feelings for Sirius, but the admiration he shows for James and the sense of guilt we know he has for his double agent activities don't really align with that image.
I think Peter's fear for his own life ended up winning over the love for his friends.
But why at this point? Why not at Hogwarts?
Something quite interesting is how Peter's father is the only parent of the Marauders who is never mentioned, not in the books, not in any additional material. Doesn't that align just so well with Peter always putting himself at the service of the most important male figure around? First James, and then after school, with the war going on, Voldemort.
Isn't it such a fitting image, Peter growing up without a father, with a too-cuddling mother whom he ends up resenting, faulting her for the absence of the father? It's so natural to paint him as a young man crushed by a sense of inadequacy towards an image of masculinity he idealizes but can't fulfill, supported by a society filled with a very toxic sense of masculinity and an absent father he can sew on any fantasy he wants.
When Peter was at Hogwarts, being friends with James, and being part of the Marauders, gave Peter a sense of security that allowed him to be brave enough to prioritize his love for his friends over himself.
Out in the real world, though, Voldemort is the dominant man and being positioned against the Dark Lord takes away the sense of security he had as a student. Both times Peter goes to Voldemort, he does it because he doesn't feel safe.
It's also abundantly clear how Peter's siding with Voldemort doesn't come from ideology. He becomes an animagus for Remus, he's a dear friend of Lily.
Peter dies because Voldemort doesn't trust him, and he is right in not trusting him. Somewhere in Peter, there's still the boy who risked his life for a friend.
Tumblr media
Try to tell me this is not an interesting character.
He's still a coward overall, but a complex one.
Also, Peter Pettigrew is a clear victim of pretty privilege when it comes to the fandom. I'm ready to bet whatever you want that if he had been described as handsome the most popular ship with Sirius would be Sirus/Peter.
Actually, he didn't even have to be described as handsome, he just needed to not be described as ugly. Draco is described as having a pointy face and people have been lying to themselves claiming he's incredibly handsome for the last twenty-five years.

for real im so tired with that trope like pack it tf up 😩🤚
tbh im kinda sick of these albus potter and his misunderstood middle child problems and people painting james sirius as two demensionsl himbo. like bffr hes the oldest child of two extremely famous parents whose name is the only legacy name of his siblings (there has been a james potter before him, there hasnt been an albus potter and lily potter).
like of all children james sirius the one who has the most burden and expectation to be perfect, both in skills AND personality, like everyone probably expects albus to be moody and angsty but they expect james sirius to be friendly, funny, bright like his namesakes and uncles.
the amount of pressure and expection that james sirius has isnt talked about tbh

another headcanon, so i read that fic about harry giving ginny his mother's necklace and it was just so sweet....
so in my head ginny is not that big for jewels and accessories, like she obviously loves girly things but she also grew up poor so she probably knew that jewellry is a luxury indulgence that is not something she'd have the luck to have. So she never really bothered with any of them
but then she saw how harry cried when he went through his family's vault and saw lily and euphemia's jewelry box and how harry was so touched knowing that he had family heirlooms passed down from the women in his family
and like he shyly gave ginny his mother's necklace and proposed to her with his grandmother's ring and when they got married harry gave her the jewelry box and told her that he hoped they would grow old together and that he could watch her pass down these heirlooms to their daughter and daughter in laws if they have any
and since then you'd never see ginny potter out and about without bracelets, earrings and necklaces.
ginny even lent victoire the potter tiara when she married teddy

sometimes i wonder of those people dont have siblings, or like dont even bother learning about characters dynamics like this is the FIRSTBORN child of a TWO very famous parents.
yes he can be silly and funny but to portray him as someone who is irresponsible just makes no sense. if anything the biggest pressure of being a potter child is 100% gonna be harder on james, even if hes getting the mischievousness of his namesakes, james potter ii is gonna be WAY more mature than james potter i simply bc he has two younger sibilings
james potter wont grow up as the center of attention in the way that his grandaddy did, and that alone removes the possibility that hes gonna be super spoiled and self centered (bfr he'll have that oldest child burden lol)
i think it makes more sense that he'll grow up to be like bill weasley than a pure reincarnation of james and sirius black.
did you know you can tell if someone is not a nextgen-predominant fan just from the way they characterise and write james sirius potter? did you also know you can tell which among those people like snape and which like the marauders more? just from the way they write james sirius potter.

Honestly, cracking up a lot at complaints I've seen about the Royal Court abandoning Simon without proper media training or advice while at the same time we're watching an absolute PR disaster playing out with the British royal family at the moment.
I know the Swedish monarchy set up is very different from the British one, but still. Look at how they threw Meghan Markle to the wolves and she was a formal married member of the Firm! You think they're going to protect the mixed race, 'unsuitable' teenager they're all hoping is going to break up with their Crown Prince soon anyway?

You speak the truth 😈
I think Wolfstar is usually the bigger offender where sexism is concerned, but Jegulus is also…bizarre. It tends to constantly insist that poor Regulus was corrupted by his monstrous parents, who forced him to become a Death Eater under pain of the Cruciatus Curse/disownment, but was saved by pure of heart ball of sunshine Mom Friend™ James, who loved him and nurtured him and gave him respite from the terrible outside world through providing him with a domestic haven for the two of them to inhabit (moves him to the Gryffindor dormitory, makes him part of the Potter household, purchases property after Regulus is disowned, etc.) despite his many flaws (violent bigotry, personality of wet cardboard) and thereby guided him out of the dark and into the light…which makes it feel like it was written by a sexually frustrated Victorian man with a raging Oedipus Complex. Even if Regulus isn’t “saved” by the end of the fic, it always seems to have this structure. It’s a treatise in heteronormativity/heteropatriachy with a m/m sticker slapped over it to make it more palatable.
Like…why does a ship need a Madonna (Jegulus—see above) or a whore (Wolfstar—“slutty,” shallow, bratty, too-worldly Sirius who is “kept in line” by Big Dick Remus) to be appealing to you? Read and write what you like, but don’t be self-righteous about how uniquely progressive you are with regards to sex and gender—and harass others for not joining your moral crusade—when this is what you’re offering to the fandom.
No lies detected, anon. I cackled @ "personality of wet cardboard." Too true.

sometimes i feel like the audience forgot these characters are supposed to be HIGH SCHOOL KIDS lol
okay but the difference between simon not knowing the side of wille's life that comes with the threats and the casual way poisoning and hate comments are just a part of wille's existence and how little his parents know about wille, versus the way wille doesn't know that simon can't just know what to wear for a royal dinner or what the do on social media or not need a job to eat is KILLING me. simon's trying to deal with the idea of constantly being scrutinized and in some level of danger and wille can't comprehend what having a job or protesting for human rights means to regular people. they can never have normal lives if they don't figure these things out but it's all so removed from each other???

My hot take for today,
Everyone who is writing hermione as their self insert always think of Emma Watson in appearances. But in reality, Hermione is pretty but not as pretty to make every guy fall for her. She got buck-tooth, messy hair, etc. And I don’t think she will appreciate you guys making her a slut for every guy possible.
I think hermione is average looking and I think that’s why she was jealous of Lavender, Fluer, Madam Rosmerta, etc. as they were able to gain Ron’s attention. And I think she is the slut only for Ron.

the fact that both ron and ginny are the ones that managed to get harry SOOOOO dramatic needs to be talk about like, harry had went through the most traumatizing shits in his life but his worst days are ginny being taken to the chamber and then his fight with ron that felt like a lifetime when it was actually just two weeks bc harry was so fucking DRAMATIC about it
ronarry are soulmates hit ask
Ronarry hits right.
If Harry's not going to be with Ginny, he's going to be with Ron. Not Hermione. Not Draco. He needs one of those youngest Weasleys carnally.

yea scorbus is cute but scorpius pining over his best friend's older brother who is just so popular and cool and scorpius wants to hate him so, so bad, but james potter has been nothing but kind towards him, always tease albus just to make scorpius laugh, always smiling at him, a smile brighter than the rising sun, and merlin, scorpius can NEVER sleep whenever he stays over at the potters because his heart cannot stop being so loud and so fast whenever james is near him and the older is ALWAYS next to him, whenever scorpius shifts his eyes, james would be there. those bright brown eyes of his... always so warm and shining, scorpius wishes he can hate james potter but the more he tries deeper he falls..

I personally think JKR had to nerf Ron so that Harry could have his heroic moments in the later books. Sure Ron had his moments but not compared to the first 3 books.
Look at the first 3 books. Ron Sacrifices in first. Flys a car, gets Harry from dursleys, went to face Aragog because he missed Hermione. Stand on his broken foot infront of an accused serial killer. And these are some of the moments I handpicked. There are a lot of moments other than this. If he had continued the same in the other 4 books, he would have defeated the hero of his own story in popularity.
Just my opinion, not a Fact.
And I’m not belittling Ron in the last 4 books but come on. You know what I mean.

my favorite headcanon is harry never able to be super strict when it comes james and lily because james has ginny's eyes and lily looks like ginny while albus is straight up mum's favorite darling boy. like albus is NEVER wrong in ginny's eyes and everyone kinda knows why lol. its the green as fresh picked toad-
albus being the slytherin that he is will ALWAYS use this to his advantage bc at the end of the day, dad might have defeated voldemort but the boss of the house is MUM
