Dian was still wary on including his family in the darker side of his life. The undead part. He still wasn’t sure how comfortable he was with Mads seemingly collecting vampire friends, even if the one he knew of was perfectly pleasant and just as damaged as the rest of them.
Jessie held an important place in Dian’s afterlife. And Dian guessed she was still important to Mads. It had been a while since he’d made the pact of a coven with her, and things were still going smoothly, so Dian decided he could finally share the news with Mads.
It felt like he was telling his kids about a new girlfriend or something, waiting until he was sure it would work before getting their hopes up about a new mom. But protecting his family was the most important part of his life now. It just worked out this way. He sat awkwardly on Mads’ couch, the place wasn’t too bad, but it was definitely a bachelor pad.
“So… I wanted to talk to you about something kind of important. I know you like Jessie… and she’s been very kind and helpful to me these past months…” he began.

Dian could answer just with the bare bones, how he liked his neighborhood. It was meant for families or, in his case, no life bachelors who wanted room for his siblings to come and go as they pleased. They were not so pleased to go...
Or, he could do his due diligence as a native and tell her everything he observed from spending thirty eight years in Swynlake.
"I live in Tortuga, it's nicer than the Southern Isles, but if you're gonna rent there you'll need roommates. The houses are built for the family lifestyle. But um, Southern Isles isn't too bad. Not to be an old man or anything, but someone your age's best best is a flat. They're the cheapest options for young adults striking out on their own the first time. Castle Suites are the more luxe option, but Benbow can work too."

Dian was on his way to work, but this couldn't take too long... Plus he could just speed there if he needed to.
He met with the unfamiliar red head, a student asking for a survey, perhaps. "Sure, I've got a few. What do you need?"

Dian hated relenting, but the flames dying down told him he made the right call. Gem would never give in if he was pushed. The elder Morey regretted so much, one of the biggest was how divorced he was from Gem. They barely had a chance to settle into a normal life, whatever that meant for them. The younger was in prison, accepting calls once a week. Then merely months after he came home, Dian left it.
Things hadn't ever been normal.
Dian's jaw set and he swallowed thickly, "Right... well, I love you. And uh, I'll see you at the next dinner."
He tapped his closed fist against the door frame and pushed off it, waltzing back through his childhood home.

"I'm trying to learn! All I know is that my little brother was in some deep shit and I wasn't there for you." Dian bit back.
Maybe this whole argument was a symptom of his own guilt. When he died and was in the darkest part of his life, he didn't let any of his family know. No one could have helped him. But in a way, he abandoned them and not the other way around. He would claim noble intent, and it was partly true. The truth of the matter was simply that Dian had grown distant from his brothers since his turning and his holding on so tightly to Gem was to restore something that just didn't exist anymore.
Gem was the Morey that Dian could relate to most now it seemed. Sins and secrets piled up between the two more than any of the others combined. Maybe it felt good to try and be a good brother again, even in this twisted form. It just wasn't the way that would work for Gem. His brother didn't want help, or a confidant. Or maybe he did and he was only denying himself that connection, another way in which they were the same.
Dian sighed, "Look, fine. I'll drop it. You can handle your shit and I won't butt in. Just--" he stuck out his hand to emphasize, "if you ever need help, ever Gem, medical, financial... whatever, don't hesitate to ask me. I won't tell anyone your business, just know my door is always open. Understood?"

No ancient bylines to follow, just pure unmoderated bloodlust and violence. That’s what the vampiric system was. He didn’t know much, very few vampires dared to anonymously post their stories to Reddit and that was where he got his intel before Jessie.
And now it was him and Jessie. “Probably for the best that we don’t have a name then. I’d much prefer to remain a secret to the rest of the world.”
He looked at her expectantly, “So now what? Do we make coven rules or? Calling cards?”

Pre-vampirism Dian wouldn't have flinched the way he did to Gem's flame. Something instinctual overrode the trust he had in his brother. It made his stomach turn to think of how that must have looked.
"I know I can't do anything about it now!" Dian snapped back, "I've already made sure that Belle could represent you if you need to go to trial, but Gem, if I would have known you were in trouble sooner..."
He trailed off. What would he have done? Buried a body? Hunted down whoever laid hands on his baby brother? Pay whatever debts he may owe? None of it sounded like something he'd do a few years ago. But Gem wasn't the only Morey guilty of something outside of the law anymore. Doc Morey took an oath to do no harm, but he didn't think twice about it when it came to his family.
"And I probably deserve to be put up on a pyre, or staked, or whatever the fuck! But none of our brothers are going to do the right thing and turn me over to hunters or the cops. Would you? You haven't so far, Gem, and I am not planning on letting you have that fate either. Fuck what you think you deserve."
Dian hated this brash conflict. He avoided conflict most of his life by being the appeasing brother, the one who ended the fights not the one who got in them. But Dian suffered more than one death apparently. His inclination to nurture turned to that of a fierce protectiveness.

Dian set his jaw. He knew Gem would be like this, deflecting the severity of the situation, refusing help. It irritated him more than anything how unbothered he seemed. Though he supposed that was Gem's prerogative, to keep everyone away from whatever bullshit he got himself into.
"How long is it going to take for you to see how much we all care about you? We already lost you once, Gem," he snapped, keeping his voice lower in hopes Mama wouldn't hear them from outside.
He really couldn't fathom what was going on. Years ago he asked if someone's heart could stop and still be alive, he had an emotional outburst and set the farmer's market booth aflame... To anyone that paid any attention, he obviously cared.
Maybe Dian could pull those strings again, make his brother see how people cared, "Don't put us through that again, not me, not Mama and Papa... Let me help you."

He raised his hands up in surrender, "Alright, I'll be careful. No seeking out vampires to tame in my free time." Not like he did with Jessie. Though in his defense, seeking her out was purely to save Mads' ass. He was just lucky that she had no ill intentions.
Dian knew she was right. Other vampires could see him as a threat, or a road block to get rid of.
"Do we need a name or...? Do vampire covens have names? Sorcerer covens do."

Dian knew he wasn't one to talk. Disappearing for months in order to 'protect his family', whatever that meant. Look, he was aware that he made mistakes and Gem had too. That should put him as the poster brother for 'hey, you can talk to me!'
Gem wouldn't go for it. But considering he was just questioned for homicide... Dian didn't care about what Gem wanted.
"It kind of is. When you come to me looking like you did... You could have died, Gem," he rationalized. "What if you had ruptured something? Did-- Did 'John' do that to you? You know what I am, I'm not exactly free of guilt either. Whatever happened... I can help you."

Character Name: Dian Morey
Title/occupation: Viscount of Rubystone Hall
Magick Status: Vampire (not out)
Biography:
Dian Morey only ever wanted the best for his younger brothers. So he always wanted them to make an advantageous match… it just seemed that most of them would rather do anything else. He wanted them to marry well so that their family name could continue. You see, about ten years ago, Dian met a woman himself. It wasn’t a romantic match as it so turned out, but she was definitely a life partner of sorts. She gave him eternal life.
He may have become the head of the household, but it was up to his brothers to pass on the family name. He almost didn’t bother with the fanfare of the season, until a particular rose caught his eye. He entered his first season the year prior to attempt to win her over. He thought he could spend forever with her. But forever lasted a few short months, ending when she chose a duke over the viscount.
Dian hadn’t seen her since that night of her engagement, hadn’t sent a letter. He was content to avoid the crowds of lovers once again and for forever if not for his younger brother returning. Mazhar would be seeking a wife and his elder brother would suck it up and do what was best for the family. He would sponsor Mads and return to the ton…

He only understood the tar brush metaphor on principle, and though it was quite serious, Dian found it amusing. He agreed that they might need to be a little exclusive at first, but one thing his parents instilled in him was that everyone deserved a chance to find some belonging. Even a vampire...
Dian was just now trying to find his place amongst vampires. He knew there were others in Swynlake, and maybe, just maybe... it could be a change for the better.
"Tarred with a brush or not, wouldn't it be better to at least know what the others are doing? So if they aren't so well behaved as you and I, we can be sure our families are safe," he gestured while he spoke. Dian wasn't really hiding his number one motive for this coven thing, his family was too important. He brushed over the fact that Jessie's family was not around.
He smiled though, when she agreed. Not sure if a verbal contract was all that was needed, he continued, "Is that it then? We're a coven if we say so or is there some blood ritual we have to perform?"
They could worry about recruitment later, after he figured out how covens actually worked.

Dian rolled his eyes, "Yeah, I'm sure the rest of the precinct was happy to have you over for the weekly slumber party."
The sarcasm slipped out when he didn't want it to, but something about brothers made a person regress ten years. It was hard to be the mature one when you weren't all that mature on your own. Dian was fed up with the nonchalant act.
"You know I am on your side, right? Whatever it was, with the bruises, the murder case... it's fucking serious, Gem. And you can't pretend everything is fine forever. I kept your secret. I didn't tell anyone about you visiting A&E. I didn't let everyone swarm you when you were taken, and I got you a solicitor for Chr--" he sharply inhaled, despite not having to breathe.
"I am on your side, whatever is going on... I just need to know what's happening here," he almost pleaded with his brother. Their parents shouldn't have to deal with the burden of knowing all that their sons got up to. Dian would take that responsibility for them. Spare them of this at least.

Dian had just about had it with the secrecy and mysteries surrounding his younger brother. Sure, he was a troubled kid. Bad reputation begets a worse reputation. And Dian never wanted to be one of the people that assumed the worst about Gem. He had a hard enough time accepting that Gem has done any wrong to begin with, but that might be an entirely different issue. His siblings were impervious to fault in his mind, despite the complexities of their relationships and lives.
He swung by his childhood home late afternoon, knowing the construction day was over. The sun just kept taking the time away this time of year. Papa would still be finishing up some admin, Mama would be tending the garden before dinner. Gem would be alone, if just for a short while.
The vampire leaned on the doorframe of the bedroom that used to be his. There weren't traces of his presence anymore, only Gem's. He could see Gem all over this room even in the books half slid under the bed from a late night reading.

"How'd the chat with Maximus go?" It wasn't the most delicate lead in, but he hoped Gem could appreciate skipping the chatter.

He didn't want to ask if a coven could dissipate, fall out. It seemed like a sore subject for Jessie by the way her eyes wandered anywhere but his for a moment. She was a rough and tumble woman, surely the others were the same and met worse fates than ending up here. Still, he couldn't bring himself to push her anymore.
"I'm sorry... I haven't known my family for half as long as some covens are around for, but I couldn't imagine not knowing where they were." It was shitty in the way of comfort, but Dian wanted to sympathize.
Dian swallowed and made his point, "I guess what I'm wondering is... would you be able to form a new one? I know when I... changed, I didn't want anything to do with vampires. They took everything from me and I couldn't get help from anyone I knew because I was afraid I'd eat them. You weren't around for that, and I can't say I would have trusted you then... but I trust you now. And- and, I know there are other vampires in Swynlake. I think if we formed a coven, maybe there could be some sense of--"
He wanted to say 'control', but just under the surface of his hopeful facade Dian knew he couldn't control another vampire. Not even if he was the head of a coven. It made his stomach turn to compel Mundus. "I'm just saying, it would be better for everyone."
