Laurance is my favorite character and he talks a lot lol
LITTLE DETAILS AND PLOT POINTS I FORGOT ABOUT IN SEASON 1
From like episode 65 onwards
• The Kiki and Zane baby pendent plot line is so odd like did that actually do anything that impacts the plot? Like why would Zane have a reason to do that? I know he’s evil and all but he has goal he’s trying to reach and what does Kiki having a werewolf baby have to do with that? I’m probably just forgetting more stuff that happens later in the season to be honest.
• Plus you would think that Garroth would have been more concerned about it seeing as Leona could have potentially been his niece.
• When the group gets lost after they leave Malachi’s castle Laurance suggests that Garroth could cuddle with the horses while him and aph cuddle
• He later also clears away poison ivy for a “romantic camping spot” at Lucinda’s while Aph kills crabs
• Garroth is the one that taught Levin to call Aphmau Mama (I think it would be funny if Levin sort of had a british accent because of Garroth and says some words differently like Mum)
• Garroth actively tries to start pursuing Aphmau after the castle with Malachi (presumably because Laurance spent the whole trip getting there convincing Garroth to tell Aphmau his feelings)
• While they’re traveling Laurance seems to constantly trying to force Garroth to confess his feelings to Aphmau and straight up tells Aph that Garroth has feelings for her at nether portal at the werewolf village
• Garroth tries to confess his feelings at camp at Lucinda’s house but Laurance is listening in and only interrupts when Garroth changes the topic to Brightport
• Laurance comes up with the idea of the phoenix alliance
• For some reason Laurance knows everything and is always explaining stuff to Aphmau like he’s the human equivalent of an lore info dump like he’s the one that forces Garroth to talk about his father (Laurance is the world building of this universe)
• Neither Aphmau or Laurance ever sleep
• Dante stays up a lot too and in the beginning he likes to be alone
• Laurance is always eavesdropping on everyone’s conversations literally he is the nosiest.
• Laurance is also way too chill about knowing Gene and for some reason just never says anything to Dante??
• Also I skipped some episodes because season one is slow and I haven’t finished rewatching season 1 but Dante is really chill about Laurance being a shadow knight despite having his entire life being torn apart by his shadow knight brother
• Laurance tells the shadow knight lady and innkeeper in Pikoro to never stop loving her probably because it helps keep her human and wishes Aphmau would do the same for him.
• Laurance is more of a realist than Garroth is both are good at reading situations but Laurance tends to less optimistic than Garroth is (probably from his experiences in the nether.)
• Laurance is also just very good at reading people and understanding their weaknesses
• Laurance realizes that love is able fight against the shadow knight’s magic and that furthers it as a theme in the story
• Garroth despite having a rivalry with Laurance confides in him often and this gives Laurance an intimate look into Garroth’s thoughts
• Laurance pretends to lean in but there’s actually a ladybug on Aph’s shoulder before just telling her about the Magicks and Witchcraft war
• Garroth goes out of his way to try and to spend time with Aphmau like trying to walk her home.
• Dante asks for a combat doll from Nana and thinks he’s met her somewhere before (I don’t remember if this comes back later in the series) and I feel like it hints at a future romance pretty well as first interaction.
• Garroth catches Aphmau when she falls from the tree and Aphmau is pretty calm about the whole situation despite that being a terrifying thing to happen (plus I feel like Garroth should have been more scared and thankful he caught her time like he nearly lost the woman he’s in love with.)
• Then they play with both Levin and Malachi in the tree house like a little family
• Laurance gives Levin and Malachi a book that Zoey reads to them (in my rewrite it would be the legend/fairy tale of aphmau’s name)
• Lucinda and Nana used to have rival cat cafes! Then they have duel!
• Laurance wears gold armor for couple episodes before getting the armor upgrade
• Garroth removes his helm when Aphmau asks him to immediately where before he refused. He trusts Aphmau and presumably Laurance and Dante completely.
• Garroth designed armor when he was younger probably at guard school that somehow Katelyn got a hold of and turned into armor for the guards along coordinating colors that match their personalities
• Garroth, Dante, and Laurance are all on the jury of 9 waitlist
I’m rewatching season one and it’s so much information to sift through. Also there are millions of other things that I probably forgot. Don’t get me wrong, I love it but after season one Jess went a different direction with the storytelling and that was a great decision.

Do you think when aphmau saw grown Levin for the first time all she could see was the man she had just lost?
It wasn’t even thirty minutes ago she saw the same blonde curls and blue eyes in the light underneath the tree canopy. Only then was Aphmau able to understand what Garroth had given up for her and Laurance. Only then did Aphmau understand what had been stolen from Garroth. The resemblance had always been there but she hadn’t known what Garroth looked like when he was a child. She wondered if in a few years would Levin’s brow crease in the same place as Garroth when he was stressed. Would Levin catch Garroth in age by the time they saw each other again? Or, would Aphmau be left with a constant reminder of what she could never have? Aphmau only then understood how young she is as she looked at her son take on the same pressure she nearly crumbled under.

Losing my mind over Laurence and Garroth’s bond.
Laurence promising to hold back to accommodate for Garroth’s shyness.
Laurence takes their promise super fucking serious, to the point where he’s ashamed and withdrawn after just. Hugging Aphmau for comfort after his fucking village was destroyed
Laurence’s (framed) betrayal was Garroth’s breaking point.
Garroth, still thinking Laurence betrayed him, was pulled back by his speech.
“You need to be a Garroth worth protecting others!” And he folds like a tower of cards
Laurence came back to himself after slaughtering a wedding procession and his first concern was “oh no I broke my promise :(“ because Aphmau kissed him
They balance each other so well.

how often do you think garroth worried about vylad after he left for tu’la? did vylad leave something with garroth (maybe a little wooden carving) as a promise he would come back? did garroth spend countless nights turning that carving over in his hands to calm his anxiety, worrying if his brother had lost his head to the king yet? maybe even fearing vylad ended up on the nether somehow?
garroth cares for his baby brother, of course he’s gonna worry when their gone longer they told him (just a few weeks, vylad had told garroth). of course garroth is going to spend his nights thinking of every possible thing that could happen to vylad while he’s in tu’la (the worst one being that he lost them again). the only solace garroth has is the comfort that comes from the little wooden wolf that vylad carved for him. by the time garroth is finally able to see his brother again, the wolf carving is already so worn down from the nights he spent worrying.

Larmau near the end of season 1
Laurance and Aphmau literally become each other’s confidants as season one comes to a close. The only people they can truly trust is each other. No wonder Garroth lets jealousy gets the better of him (I still don’t think he would betray them without Lillian influencing it magically). However, Aph and Laurance’s relationship grew in such a short amount of time. This shift really began after they visit Meteli and they hug. Suddenly, they’re keeping secret between each other and they’re the only people making each other laugh. They are both the people that they let loose with and the people that they go to when things get difficult. Honestly, if everything with Scaleswind and Zane hadn’t happened I feel like it would have led to their relationship developing into an actual romance.
Laurance literally begins staying at her home while all the chaos begins to unfold with Scaleswind. He was there to celebrate Malachi’s rebirth (Lucinda is also there too to be fair.) Laurance has become a vital part of Aphmau’s personal life that Garroth unknowingly withheld from himself. Garroth, of course, was always there for Aphmau and especially her children but he always shied away from letting her in and left a boundary between them. But, what’s interesting is at Malachi’s celebration dinner, Aphmau left a seat open for Garroth right between her and Laurance. I feel like this is a good metaphor for Aphmau, Laurance, and Garroth’s relationship. Garroth always has a seat at the table with them but, he’s never reached out and sat down. However, there’s always this space between Aphmau and Laurance; a boundary they can’t cross because they both love Garroth. Laurance and Aphmau can’t wholly give themselves to each other because Garroth has unknowingly taken possession of parts of them.

Garroth’s Betrayal
Garroth was in a depressive episode but even then I can’t see him betraying Aphmau and Laurance (the two people he trusts most in this world.) Like clearly Garroth can be a jealous person but he also bottles his emotions till he absolutely can’t anymore (usually till outside forces make him tell the truth.) I feel like his jealousy would have more likely led him to close himself off again and his extreme self hatred would grow rather than him just deciding to betray them. Especially because Phoenix Drop itself is one of the most important things to Garroth. But, if Zane or Lillian did something to cause Garroth to spiral and back him in corner it would make way more sense for him to rely on the only person that can understand everything he’s facing, his little brother.
Lillian says she’s a herb specialist it would have been interesting if she had given Garroth a potion or item that worsened his mental state. Something that made him more paranoid and anxious. Like Garroth has an overwhelming feeling of doom. Zane’s plan could’ve had begun as soon as they got back from the Malachi arc. Possibly, Zane found in an item that causes Garroth intense nightmares or Lillian is able to control dreams sort of similar to Malachi’s magicks . So Garroth stops getting sleep because of his nightmares. The dreams could just be a million different scenarios but they all lead to Phoenix Drop’s destruction. So he doesn’t know what’s going to happen and the cause changes in every dream. One of the worst dreams involves Laurance giving into his shadow knight form. He kills the entire village including Aphmau and her sons. Once Laurance is himself again he begs Garroth for forgiveness and death. He pleads with Garroth to make him pay for what he’s done.
All these dreams cause Garroth to begin to isolate himself. Then from his lack of sleep he begins to impair his judgement and this is when Zane really begins his manipulation. Zane reaches out to Garroth, Garte is becoming dangerous to everyone (some kind of lie that makes it seem like Zane has no where to go) he somehow creates a lie that opens up communication again. Garroth can’t differentiate between his scared kid brother and the high priest Zane, after all he still is a protector through and through.
Garroth is barely keeping it together and he’s wearing his helmet again. Everyone is noticing this change but Garroth says he’s fine and he’s still managing to keep up his duties as head guard. Garroth feels like he’s going crazy but he can’t falter everyone is relying on him. Garroth is also talking to the enemy (Zane) and he can’t tell anyone because they wouldn’t understand. The final nail in the coffin is when he sees the illusion of Laurance and Aphmau.
They kiss in the clearing and break apart to have a quiet conversation seemingly to themselves. Garroth intently listens despite his heart aching. Aphmau confesses she’s been having terrible nightmares and she falls apart in Laurance’s arms. She sees Phoenix Drop burning to the ground and Garroth realizes she’s having the same nightmares as him. Then she finally says she can’t trust anyone but Laurance and she suspects Garroth is betraying them. He’s been pulling away from them and Aph can’t even recognize him anymore and Laurance agrees with her. Garroth sneaks away after this and decides that he’ll make sure everything is okay. He’ll fix everything at Phoenix Drop and leave for O’kasis so he won’t cause them anymore pain. So, he tells Zane of his dreams, the amulet, and he agrees to go to O’kasis as long as Zane never harms the Phoenix Drop and its people. He’s convinced himself that what he’s doing is for the greater good. He can handle it. He’ll make sure everything is alright, after all he’s a protector and he never deserved Aphmau and Laurance anyway.

every three episodes laurance has to drop several paragraphs dedicated to psychoanalyzing garroth and I think that's beautiful. I think that's true love right there. he spends a truly impressive amount of time pondering what the hell is Wrong with that guy, and i understand. so do I man.

Yeah literally, Laurance is my favorite character I love him but he can be like extremely kind and charismatic then he suddenly ends his sentence or he has a one off comments where he says something like “Y’know I can’t stand another man touching you.”
A bunch of other male characters do the same thing too but Laurance is a main character so it happens more often. Anytime it happens I literally just ignore it because causal sexism is so normalized in the series.
also laurance isn't safe from my criticism as well. i love him, but MAN his writing got so pushy at times. him being a casual flirt was fine but there were occasional comments that were SO unneeded. many of the men suffer from this.

Malachi being 900 years old is crazy. I love him but that makes no sense. How is he literally not completely insane after being isolated by himself for that long. He was slightly evil for little bit but like he just acts like a normal kid. Plus, language changes so rapidly the gang probably wouldn’t even be able to understand Malachi. He would basically be speaking a whole different language.
Honestly, if you wanted him to be from a different time period the story could be that he was basically dormant or asleep for most of the 900 years then he gets awoken. Maybe he wakes up because Irene was reborn as Aphmau and this caused the balance of the entire world to shift. Then when Aphmau meets Malachi she’s the only one who can understand him because she can still understand languages that Irene knew. That would give Malachi a good reason to latch on to Aphmau so much. It would also make Aphmau feel directly responsible for him because she’s one of the few people easily able to connect with him.
Like, Aphmau is kind enough to take in any child she meets but I think it would be interesting to make that situation more nuanced. Malachi desperately wants to form connections with other people and at first Aphmau is the only one who can give him that. This leads him to be more trusting of Aphmau. Also, I think it would be really cute for Laurance to try everything in his power to connect with Malachi despite there being a language barrier (probably all of the boys would do this but Laurance especially because he sees himself in Malachi and he stays with him at the castle.) I can picture him making a fool of himself like pretending to fall or making silly faces at him just to get Malachi to laugh. Then soon after the castle the group meets Lucinda who later can create a potion or enchant an amulet so Malachi can understand everyone. Eventually, he wouldn’t need it anymore because Zoey helps him learn to read and write. Zoey also understands what it’s like to be someone living outside of the regular passage of time so she would be able really understand how Malachi feels.

MCD Little Details and Plot Points I Forgot pt. 2
Season one, around episode 84 to 94?
(basically my thoughts and notes about the series)
• Garroth says that he’s feels as though Laurance is like his brother and he was never able to experience this type of relationship with his own brothers (although he only mentions Zane so it makes me wonder if Jess hadn’t made Vylad his brother yet, or if talking about Vylad is too painful for Garroth.)
• Also, in my headcanon I feel like Garroth is developing feelings for Laurance and he tries to rationalize it as brotherhood. I feel like the monarchy that O’Kasis basically is, most likely prioritizes continuing the bloodline. Maybe this just started as a way of continuing Esmund’s legacy/power but as O’kasis became more powerful and corrupt it became more about creating dynasty that wouldn’t end. So gay relationships are probably frowned upon and personally I feel like at this point Garroth hadn’t considered being in relationship with a man and wasn’t fully aware it was an option. For me, I headcanon him as bisexual so possibly Garroth knew he was attracted to women and never thought more about his sexuality choosing to ignore any other feelings he had for anyone other than women.
• Anyway, Garroth then states that he hates seeing Laurance in pain from the Hayden’s death and feels like it might be worse than when he’s a shadow knight. Aphmau, of course, disagrees with this.
• Laurance struggling with his emotions while he thinks Hayden is dead shows the mental turmoil he’s experiencing as he balances his emotions as shadow knight.
• Aphmau inspects the crime scene so Laurance doesn’t have to see it. :((
• Laurance accidentally calls Aph “love” when he was exhausted. :((
• Laurance is able to sense when Aph is in danger? It happens twice the first time when they save Candenza and then when Aph is attacked by Aaron. It seems he just knows something is wrong and then just shows up.
Which is interesting considering that he and Aph seem to just have a connection since he became a shadow knight. Honestly, Laurance might’ve had some sort of untapped magicks before he was turned. Like when Laurance was stuck in the nether his image or consciousness was projected into the overworld and caused Levin to levitate/walk. That seems to be abnormal for when someone becomes a shadow knight. Maybe through coping with his transformation Laurance unknowingly manifested a bond/connection to Aphmau with whatever magical capacity he had.
Or, the bond was created simply because Aph is the person who Laurance must kill in order to become a fully fledged shadow knight. So Laurance then has a heightened sense of Aphmau’s status and location. Which, ironically, serves Laurance in being a better protector of Aph.
Ooor, even simpler, Laurance just has heightened senses in general and he’s always making sure Aph is alright using them and the Levin incident earlier in the season is irrelevant.
• Aphmau and Laurance have that hug moment in the woods outside of Phoenix Drop where he asks to always be by Aphmau’s side and earlier asks to keep Cadenza’s gift a secret.
• Aphmau chooses to keep both of these things a secret from Garroth, which he probably realizes he’s not being told everything that happened on the trip. Then Laurance wears a helmet for a couple days out of embarrassment. So, Garroth most likely thinks more happened between them than actually did. His jealousy probably started to grow more from this trip and he started feeling like he was being left out.
• Laurance asks Cadenza to watch over Garroth when they think he’s sick. :((((
• Laurance immediately steps up as head guard when everyone thinks Garroth is sick and makes sure everything is okay.
• Dante eats breakfast with Zoey and the kids and that’s the first time he’s been in her house. (I’m surprised how short of a time Dante has been in the series by the time we reach the end of season one, like as a kid I remember it being so much longer than it actually was.)
• Aaron second act as a character in the series is to threaten Aphmau and the village. (I’m so sorry to the Aaron stans out there but I can’t stand his ass and I can see the vision Jess was trying to go for but his character development was just everyone outside of him acting out of character).
Like I love a good “enemies to lovers” trope but Aaron pointing a sword to Aphmau’s throat wasn’t that. When something like that usually happens it’s like omg they have so much tension and they cross swords a couple times then they have dramatic banter that lets you feel that they’re is something more to their relationship than “enemies.”
Instead, we have Aaron knocking Aphmau over then pointing a sword to her throat. Then he threatens to kill her because he assumes without knowing her that she’s a selfish lord and only lets her live because she also hates Zane. But, he forces Aphmau to not tell anyone he’s there or else she’ll be putting her entire village in danger. HE IS QUITE LITERALLY CAMPED A SHORT WALK FROM APHMAU’S HOUSE WHERE SHE AND HER CHILDREN SLEEP EVERY NIGHT. That’s awful, man. Jess acts this out by constantly touching her throat so it’s kind of reasonable to assume that if they weren’t blocks the sword was probably directly pressed to Aphmau’s neck. Like I know, Aaron really isn’t that bad and he wasn’t talking about HIM hurting the village. He was actually talking about other people who after the pendent and this would put the village in danger. But, as the viewer and someone who’s seen the series before I have that knowledge as an outsider. While Aphmau in that scene only has the knowledge that if she’s says something wrong or lets other people know he’s here it will put everyone in danger.
Like Laurance comes up to Aph immediately after it happens because he felt she was in danger. He says she looks pale, distressed, and asks her if she’s been crying!!! Aphmau was terrified for her safety. That’s not a good beginning to a romance in my book! If the scene was framed differently where Aph had some autonomy in that scene like maybe she defends herself from Aaron then they begrudgingly come to agreement that he can stay that would be different. But instead he demands that Aph doesn’t tells anyone or else she’s in danger along with her loved ones. Anyway, I dislike this scene and Jess probably would have retconned it if she got to that point in Rebirth.
• Moving on! Laurance checks her temperature and makes sure she’s okay. He even tells her that he can carry her home if she’s too tired. Then he even takes the wood that she gathered and finishes the task for her so she can go home to her boys!
• Then, Malachi immediately blows up and Zoey cries because she feels like she’s a bad mom (even though she’s quite literally raising Aph’s kids for her but Zoey’s got trauma so I get it.) Aphmau reminds her that’s she apart of the family and isn’t upset with her. I love them so much!

No literally, Laurance is sooo smart. There’s a reason he was the head guard of Meteli and on the wait list of the jury of nine. Most of the world building is done by Laurance and it’s likely he at least has a big interest in history. It’s really interesting because it kind of just shows how open Laurance is as a person. Garroth has known Aphmau since the beginning of the story and chose to withhold information from her consistently. While Laurance just shares and shares everything he can give to Aphmau. It makes me wonder if Garroth would have opened up at all if not for Laurance pushing him. Garroth likes to bottle everything up and keep hidden behind his helm. If we separate Jess and try to look at Aphmau as character she’s a peace keeper and never wanted to rock the boat while Laurance tried to keep Garroth honest. It’s like Laurance was a Garroth translator for Aphmau sometimes.
Anyway to the Dante thing, there has to be some resemblance to Dante and Gene. Which you could honestly argue when they first met that Laurance and Dante might’ve been unnerved by each other. Like both of them seeing the worst parts of each other in one another. I would like to think that magicks has an energy that people could just feel even if they themselves don’t have magicks or can practice witchcraft. Of course, that’s just my personal idea but both of them might’ve felt something off about one another. Like Dante knows what the energy from a shadow knight feels because of his brother. While Laurance remembers what it felt like to be around Gene and sense some sort of connection to Gene along with them sharing a resemblance. I definitely think they would move past it pretty quickly but I think would have been interesting to see it affect their first interactions. It’s also satisfying to think that Laurance takes an older brother role and Dante finally gets a brother that loves him unconditionally despite their monstrous nature.
Sorry to ramble, I have a lot of thoughts about the series and I think about the relationships of these characters probably too much lol
