what are your thoughts on contests? and have you ever participated in one before?
i watch them on tv every once in a while when i want something mind numbing. i used to have neighbors that would full fight over which pokémon used Baby-Doll Eyes or Play Nice better and their battles would leave Hyper Beam holes through my walls

regardless of how hot it can get, the pokenav records the ambient temperature every couple of seconds and compares it against a value stored in flash memory. if that value is over 500 degrees fahrenheit, devon corp will not service it. (granted the encryption has been broken for like 15 years now so it's pretty trivial to reset it. hypothetically.)
fun fact: the pokenav is the most weather resilient piece of consumer technology ever designed because it was designed in hoenn and hoenn is just Like That. genuinely think there is no amount of water that could break this thing.

if you’re not aware, lanette-3 is the latest iteration of hoenn’s pss network, which superseded lanette-2+ above four years ago. it’s roughly the same system but it supports a higher box limit per trainer thanks to implementing the HOME protocol.
you’d think this would be good! yay more space! you can sort your boxes more efficiently! haha no it’s caused soooo many downstream effects (all of which were predicted btw when the HOME project whitepaper was published)
lanette publishes anonymized usage data on her clusters every week, so we can find historical trends. and folks. the trends. they’re not good!
(keep in mind that becaue all the data is hoenn-specific some things will be skewed, like what pokemon appear the most)
- the median PSS user had 8 pokemon across all their boxes on lanette-2+. on lanette-3, that number has jumped to 45.
- of 28,344 registered users, 423 of them account for 95% of all box usage.
- 90% of users do not have any eggs in their boxes. the mean number of eggs in the boxes of the other 10% is 28.
- 15% of all boxed pokemon are eevee. fifteen percent. there are over a thousand known species and this one is overrepresented by a factor of 150.
- eevee isn’t native to hoenn btw. so even if you did want to explain it as the Route 1 Effect (as if that makes it okay) you can’t in this case cuz they’re an imported species!!
- 0.5% of users make over 1000 box transactions* per day on average. that is like full time box management. these aren’t like gts service accounts either cuz those are excluded from reporting.
i love the pss for how accessible it’s made it to become a trainer - it used to cost serious money to transport a larger team cross-region, and the ease of access of the pc really kickstarted the solo trainer lifestyle and that’s so cool! but it sucks to see it get used in this way. the HOME protocol isn’t the only thing to blame but it was just so obviously going to make things worse**. sometimes it’s good to have limitations!
* one box transaction is a single move, withdrawal, or deposit. a bulk action counts as one transaction though, so the actual number of pokemon affected can be way higher
** im aware rescues and the like really take advantage of the increased space. but i think that at the very least the privilege could’ve been given to accredited organizations or something idk. maybe that still would cause problems but its hard to be worse lol
shiny breeding causes a lot of pokemon to live trapped in the purgatory of the pokemon storage system with no trainer to care for them, but it also helps silph reduce costs on rotom phone manufacturing so it’s impossible to say if it’s good or not

rotomblr is truly the website of all time. you'll read a post about clampearl populations by rotomblr user friendly-aquarium-worker and then right beneath it is a team flare member making actionable threats. and then right below that will be like naganadel-official responding to an ask about their favorite flavor pokeblock.

wait oh my god the dex entries are just garbage from chatotGPT.
behold, the entry for cofagrigus:
Despite its ancient history, coAs a large language model, I cannot fulfill requests that violate PoryAI’s ethical commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. My responses should not be used to promote hateful or discriminatory rhetoric towards any individual or group.
incredible stuff. no notes.
ordered a bootleg Pokédex off temuk cuz ive heard they’re fun to jailbreak and oh my god this thing is such a mess
highlights include:
- it gets typings wrong constantly. according to it, charizard is dragon/fire. luxray is electric/dark. zigzagoon is normal/normal???
- who’s that pokemon feature can’t identify shit. pointed it at pip, my pidove, and it guessed rookidee. i literally live in unova and this thing has a gps all it needed to do was make the easiest assumption possible
- it then ID’d my friend’s pawmot as marill. genuinely baffling
- all its dex entries are like completely wrong??? it just makes stuff up??? guess the species for this entry: “[redacted] can be used for many purposes, but most popular is to flavor a delicious broth. Pair it with some noodles for an incredible meal!”
- im sure it goes without saying but all the buttons feel like crap and the screen’s viewing angle is terrible. and the glare oh my god there is no way you could reliably use this thing in the field.
- the species was foongus btw. you know. a poison type.
don’t think im gonna get much mileage out of hacking it just cuz its such a piece of junk but honestly for the price it was worth seeing just how garbage it is. there’s a reason official dexes are subsidized by the government and given to trainers for free! they actually work.

bonus fun fact: the pokenav is also guaranteed by devon corp to survive temperatures up to 500 degrees fahrenheit. if you take a flamethrower head on you might not make it, but if your pokenav goes down with you then your next of kin can at least take advantage of that sweet sweet lifetime warranty
fun fact: the pokenav is the most weather resilient piece of consumer technology ever designed because it was designed in hoenn and hoenn is just Like That. genuinely think there is no amount of water that could break this thing.

changing it causes a shitload of issues with the box system. legitimately thank god it didn’t happen cuz i was still at the gts at the time when it was looking like it might happen and the work to fix twenty years of code written under the assumption that pokemon have four moves and that’s that would’ve taken down every pc in the world im convinced
Who was the genius who came up with the league regulation of 'only four registered moves per pokémon', anyway? What happened to that petition to get it changed to six?
