At the other end of the hallway stood not only the young Phoenix, his soul burning brightly from the kiss of the eikon, but the shadow of lost kin—and how long had it been since she had laid eyes on him who sought to return prosperity to their people? Too many years to count, and too many rifts that had opened between them since the day of separation.
At first, she believed it to be a distant dream. But this was no dream. For the first time in ages, Athena could feel his presence. Not dormant as it was in the young crown prince, but alive and awake in this young soul.
Was he aware, she wondered. He had to, for their power seldom went unnoticed. A friendly smile came easily over her lips when Athena closed the distance between the dominant and herself. Quiet steps carried her over to him and with her hands loosely resting behind her back, she halted right in front of the guest. Or intruder. No. Not an intruder. He would not have slipped past Dion.
" They call you dead, " the woman spoke and leaned forward, watching the young soul with an unblinking gaze. " You have hidden well from the world, but won't you agree it is quite risky to walk the palace unattended, Phoenix? You can never know who or what finds you here. "
His aether hummed. So many pieces of lost kin. The eikon. Ultima. Until now, Athena had not even known an eikon would be capable of carrying a shard of her kin without losing control over himself entirely. How fascinating. What would she give to peer into his soul and his aether to her heart's content; and the thought of doing so brightened her smile. Perhaps no one would notice if she did. After all, he had come alone, and Dion had let him go.
" But you do not look well. Let me help you. "
@deusmater
The meeting with Dion had gone... not as poor as it could have, but Joshua would have been a liar to say he wasn't disappointed. The King of Dragons - Bahamut - was not one to back down from a threat, even if that threat was one he couldn't fully understand. It had seemed like a boon to discover him so open to the idea of Ultima, but it was little more then a cursed gift, the believe simply making him want to try to handle it on his own.
Joshua was not blind. He was not an idiot. He knew exactly what Dion meant when he said he had to handle something on his own first.
The Emperor...
Such was Dion's decision. Joshua would not have been able to stop him even if he tried; both his own and the Phoenix's strength paled in comparison to Dion and Bahamut's. He could only hope that this decision wouldn't cause further troubles down the line.
Sir Terence had been meant to see Joshua out, but it really hadn't been that hard to slip away from him. He was playing with fire being here, so close to where his mother lived, but he found himself almost... compelled as he walked down one of the marble hallways.
And he paused, feeling something... wrong. Like an icy hand touching the back of his neck - and reaching into his chest, squeezing at his heart and lungs. He had felt this before, whenever Ultima had gotten near.
Joshua glanced over his shoulder to see if anyone was following him, but his attempts to survey his surroundings were interrupted by a sudden coughing fit. He leaned heavily against one of the walls as one hand pressed up against his mouth, both to stifle the noise and to hide the blood he knew he would be spitting up.
Ultima - here? It would explain so much, but if that were the case then Joshua knew he was standing in the middle of a trap.

" 𝐎𝐍𝐋𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐅𝐅 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐀𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐈𝐔𝐌 𝐎𝐑 𝐋𝐀𝐇𝐀𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀 𝐇𝐈𝐌𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅 𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐘. The rest requires permission from the Speaker due to safety concerns and for the purpose of record-keeping. " Surely exceptions could have been made for the members of the Convocation easily, yet Athena reserved the right to deny Elidibus and the rest such privileges now that the prison itself had become her body. That he was still allowed to come to Pandaemonium? A sign of her goodwill towards the man her son seemed to adore. But if he was worth the time that remained to be seen, she thought while walking the guest down the stairs to the deeper layers of Asphodelos.
They passed crossing corridors and gates; heavy bars that revealed the enclosures of the denizens of the prison and their warders. " Erichthonios has mentioned you a couple of times. He enjoys your presence, " Athena told him before turning around the corner to their right. Their steps echoed from the walls, mixing with the humming of magick and the occasional noise from within the enclosures. " He has never done so before. The change does make me curious. About your meeting. And you. "
Especially him who had managed to reunite father and son; a feat that Athena had believed to be impossible after so many years of separation.
Oh he didn't like the way she had chosen to move one single solitary bit, but he managed to keep his expression mostly neutral, only the twitch of an eye betraying his discomfort. "Lahabrea's permission? I wasn't aware you asked for anyone's permission, lady Athena." He could be polite, but it was a struggle and he did not like that either. Something about this woman just unnerved him, and before now they had never even spoken to one another...that he could recall, at least.
"....But very well. To Abyssos then." By all fairness her escorting him was not itself out of place, as she was certainly not exaggerating the potential danger of the place. Of course, she had to know that he already knew the way to Abyssos himself, though....maybe she didn't. He didn't quite understand her nature or attachment to Pandæmonium and that was likely by design. All he could do was go along with things for now and perhaps get an explanation from Lahabrea.

She blinked once and then twice. " Isn't the purpose of research and science to make the impossible possible, " Athena then wanted to know from him, as a hint of amusement lined her every word. " We need hardier creations to fill the empty regions of our star. Attaching more lives to this one could be an interesting change, or won't you agree? "
Truth be told, however, and perhaps Emet-Selch already knew this, for they were no strangers to each other, Athena had little interest in filling the star with creations. They could have changed the concept in favour of hardiness, but this was not what she wanted—she wanted to tinker with the life tread. The least explored matter of life and soul. " We should reinforce the life tread first and see how it goes. And if it does not work, we could possibly attach another soul. Oh, Hades, have you ever seen a creature with two souls? I imagine it to be quite fascinating to observe. "
Maybe she should try it once she was alone. Now that she mentioned it, she found it challenging to banish it from her vivid imagination again.
"Nine souls is certainly not an option." Emet replied. "It would be horribly unstable just for a start." He huffed a sigh, knowing her well enough to know she would attempt to do this with or without her help, and it was better with so he could keep an eye on the whole matter and keep it from going off the rails entirely. Especially as this involved souls, he as Emet-Selch had a responsibility. That didn't mean he had to like it though.
Crossing his arms he scowled. "This has never been done before." He stated. "I won't say it's impossible, but nothing is impossible until it's proven impossible. Just don't get your hopes up." Her ideas were certainly off the wall enough. "Even if it is possible, that doesn't mean it should be done either." Manage expectations and try to keep her from breaking all laws of creation while he was at it.

This has been on my mind for long but I’m gonna do this - please reblog this if you’re comfortable with pre-establishing relationships. I do not mean “met at the grocery store two weeks ago” or “have a common friend”, but rather stuff like “have been best friends since kindergrden”, “go for a beer every friday”, “friends with benefits”, “dated in highschool”, “hate each other’s guts because -insert reason-”  etc. Something meaningful (but not necessarily shippy) and I mean with muns/characters you have not interacted with, because I cannot believe I am the only one who prefers jumping right into the heart of the human interaction.

𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐀 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐄𝐓 𝐕𝐎𝐈𝐂𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐇𝐄𝐑: You should dispose of him, too. Now you have the chance. He had always been loyal to his late brother and his ideals, had he not? To her and her reign, Byron could very well become a threat if she was not careful. And yet, he sat at her side of the long table, which had been moved to the other end of the grand hall not a long time ago. Anabella poured herself a small goblet of wine and glanced at him while gesturing with the carafe at his own goblet. " They will bend the knee and smile, " she mused with a quiet, almost exhausted tone, lacing her words as she spoke. " Swearing me their loyalty, and behind my back, they will gossip and scheme, just like they have done with Elwin. "
And Elwin had tolerated it or had not even seen it due to his long absences in which he had left his wife in charge of the castle and the duchy itself. Until now, the seven high houses had got away with their questionable sense of loyalty but with her as the new reigning monarch for the moment, this would not be enough. She did not trust them. She had seen too many of their second faces to be foolish enough to think this time it would be different. Not even the imperial influence would protect her from slander and betrayal, as Anabella Rosfield knew.
" Is it worth it to welcome them in Rosalith Castle and hear them out? "
The corner of her mouth twitched into the faintest hint of a smile. She should not trust him either—her heart was too soft sometimes. And sometimes, Anabella despised herself for that very fact. Another question crossed her mind while she studied his face for nothing particular: Was it worth waiting for him to turn against her?
It was a question she knew no answer to, and perhaps she did not even wish to know. Who would ever wish to know that their closest, or only one for that matter, friend was against everything she now stood for?

She vanished a couple seconds later, only to reappear next to the young man once more and walk with him to the entrance of Asphodelos. " However, I have to ask for Lahabrea's permission for you to enter Pandaemonium, " the ancient chirped, rather unbothered by the way he had left her standing at the gate without further words directed to her. " Pandaemonium remains a high-security facility, and maybe even more so now that it contains my own soul. "
Her lips formed a strange smile while she regarded the Emissary's profile from the corner of her eye. Erichthonios liked and trusted him and so did Lahabrea, as much as she could tell, but that did not mean that she herself trusted him to roam the prison unattended. Too many secrets still lingered within the confines of this place, secrets he had yet to see, and she did not wish for him to find them just now. By coincidence. Because he got lost on his way to the deeper layers.
And thus, she matched the pace of his steps. " I will come with you. He is not here in Apshodelos but attending to tasks in Abyssos. You have not been there yet. "
Elidibus tilted his head slightly. "Indeed, I do not need your permission. Erichthonios is a man grown and can make his own decisions." Perhaps he was a touch defensive about his friend, but he couldn't help it in this case. He remembered well that Athena had intended him harm as a child, and while the full of her ambition had not been revealed to him, there was little doubt in his mind that it had not been good.
She was not his problem to solve in any event, and so he inclined his head slightly to her. So long as she minded herself and did not begin her dangerous experiments again, he would choose to leave her be, and so he moved to walk past her to seek Erichthonios and did his best to put her out of his mind, reminding himself again that his duty was to maintain balance and so long as she did not disrupt that, he had no cause to quarrel with her.
