paper hearts mulder is the definition of doomed by the narrative. he finds himself in that same dream of samantha’s abduction, repeating those same lines, reaching for that same gun, even though he knows that he’s trapped in a memory. he’s torn between trying to see the memory more clearly and his desire to change its outcome. i wonder how often this scene plays out in his dreams and how many different ways he’s tried to alter it. he doesn’t at all seem surprised when it begins.
