Rennie Pratt, 29, had been charged with murder in the 2009 slaying of 36-year-old Michael Porcella. An Alameda County jury convicted her Thursday of voluntary manslaughter and an enhancement for using a gun.
"He was outside on the porch when he was shot," said prosecutor Jill Nerone. "I hoped the jury would view the evidence as a premeditated murder while lying in wait."
The jury, however, acquitted Pratt of murder. She testified that she had accidentally shot her boyfriend as she was trying to unload the weapon.
The killing was the culmination of a number of domestic disputes involving the couple, authorities said. Police were previously called to the home, but no arrests were ever made.
The jury ruled out the accidental-discharge theory but could not dismiss the possibility of "imperfect self-defense," in which someone overreacts and attacks a perceived aggressor when in fact the target intends no harm, the prosecutor said.
She was sentenced to 21 years in prison on June 24, 2011

In 2004. Regina R. Williams, 37, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and assault in the death of 32-year-old Maurice S. Landis, also of Kansas City. Williams faces up to 17½ years in prison. Prosecutors agreed to drop an armed criminal action charge that carried a possible sentence of life in prison.
Williams testified she was drinking alcohol at a party Oct. 30, 2004, when she and Landis began fighting. The two continued to fight outside, and Williams got into her GMC Jimmy and began chasing Landis. She drove onto a grassy area and struck Landis. He ended up in the street in the 5200 block of Blue Ridge Cutoff, where another car hit and dragged him.

The father of Newtown, Conn. school shooter Adam Lanza told a writer for The New Yorker that he and his ex-wife, Nancy, never suspected their son was dangerous.
"Nancy Lanza had grown up a ‘live free or die’ New Hampshire gal, and she had a sense that guns were part of everyday life,'' author and journalist Andrew Solomon told Savannah Guthrie on TODAY Monday. Nancy, a gun enthusiast who was shot and killed by her son, kept several firearms in the house.
The Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle that Adam used belonged to her. "I don’t think guns should be a part of everyday life, but I think they had no sense that Adam was dangerous. They thought he was peculiar, but they never thought he would hurt anyone. Peter, who taught him to drive, said he was the 'safest, most cautious, most rule-following person I ever met.'''

In a proceeding that lasted less than a minute Thursday, Shauna Mahoney, the 20-year-old Niagara Falls mom who pled guilty to smothering her 17-month-old son was sentenced to 10 years in prison and five years of probation. Shackled, and standing before Niagara County Court Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza in a khaki jail jumpsuit, Mahoney, in a voice so soft it could hardly be heard, simply shook her head and said, “No.” when asked if she had anything to say before being sentenced. Prosecutor Timothy Lundquist also said nothing before the sentencing and Mahoney’s defense attorney, Michael McNelis, asked only that the judge “follow the agreed upon sentence.” In February, Mahoney pled guilty to a single count of first-degree manslaughter in the Sept. 5 slaying of her son, Trevor Schneider. She had faced a single count of second-degree murder. Had Mahoney been convicted of second-degree murder she would have faced 25 years to life behind bars.

Tyonne Palmer was a hard-working nursing assistant who cared for her three kids and took care of a chronically ill friend, jurors heard during two weeks of trial.
They also found out the 32-year-old was dating a married pastor and helped his son kill the woman standing between her and her chance to marry the pastor.
After convicting her of murder for her part in the May 2010 shooting of Pauletta Burleson, they seemed to take both versions of Palmer into account, deciding she should spend only seven years behind bars.
