Why would you leave this in the tags?!
And I think the only way people can actually like this abuser is if they don't look at his abusive behavior, or just sweep it away with shit like Oh PoOr DeAn SaM aTe HiS LuCkY cHaRms. They literally ignore how he shouts at his loved ones when he gets mad at them, and has physically abused Castiel and Sam on multiple occasions. And that's not even getting into how much he abused Jack, especially when Jack had just been born. Dean comes across a three day old baby who's self harming and proceeds to promise that he'll kill him if Jack steps out of line. He's a fucking monster, and it infuriates me how few people see it.
It's been a while since I watched Supernatural, so don't take my opinions as gospel or anything. But I think Dean is self-hating to the point of narcissism in some ways. Don't get me wrong, I empathise with Dean and understand why fans largely do too. But his self-loathing warps his perception and becomes the centre of EVERYTHING and at times that really has ripple effects on those around him - particularly Sam.
Take their childhood, Sam has a right to mourn the fact that he didn't get a normal childhood. He's allowed to be angry that he didn't get a home, a present father, a stable community, and consistent education. But whenever Sam attempts to express his complicated feelings about his childhood, Dean immediately interprets it as ' oh I was supposed to look out for you. Are you saying I failed? Are you confirming I'm worthless?' which grinds the conversation to a complete halt. Because of Dean's intense self-criticism, Sam can never really be 100% honest with him or ask for support with his own issues, especially regarding their childhood. As anything outside of 100% gratitude just becomes another stick for Dean to beat himself with, and the conversation is immediately derailed.
Not only does Deans self-hatred mean that Sam's expression of his own experiences are pretty consistently shut down. In some ways, I think Dean strips Sam of his autonomy - he's so self-loathing, he sees every decision Sam makes as being about/a reaction to him. A good example of this is Stanford. Rather than understanding Stanford for what it was, an attempt by Sam to carve out a better life from himself and escape hunting. Dean views it as betrayal or abandonment, some re-affirmation of his own belief that he's not worth caring about. Rather than understanding it's a rejection of hunting, he sees it as Sam rejecting him. To Dean, Sam isn't attempting to find a better life, he's punishing the family.
Overall, it's interesting that people largely and rightfully sympathise with Dean due to his self-hatred. However, I don't see as much discussion about how his self-hatred doesn't just hurt him, it hurts those he's close to, as it colours his interpretation of their every action. Dean's self-loathing is always the biggest thing in the room and that has consequences.

LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
Tumblr media
The actual irony of this scene is Dean blaming Cas for everything that goes wrong in his life when he is the one sole reason that Cas has lost everything
Cas lost his family in heaven, his wings, his powers his home. He has lost every friend outside the Winchester's because they end up sacrificing for the Winchesters. He has lost his life on multiple occasions, lost his son twice, lost his self worth but yet its Dean who gets to say Cas is the reason everything goes wrong for him when time after time it being Cas who has saved him and his brothers life.
Writers give Cas a little self respect back by allowing him to walk away from Dean. Then rip it away by having him accept Dean's Bs prayer where Dean doesn't even apologise for anything just forgives Cas for Cas doing nothing wrong and being a good father to his son.
And the writers still think its a good ending for a character who is depressed, and suicidal to die sacrificing himself for the person who was the sole reason for him to be depressed and suicidal.

That's the thing that maddens me the most. I could tolerate Dean being an abusive dick if the show acknowledged that that was what he was and everyone in his life deserved better. But no, he was portrayed as the hero and everyone fell all over themselves to excuse his abusive behavior. It was deeply frustrating and honestly I find Supernatural nigh unwatchable now unless a scene doesn't have him in it.
the truly uncomfortable thing about spn as a show is that it consistently acts like dean is in the right when he unjustly lashes out at people

I know the ending wasn't universally loved but it'll forever hold a place in my heart for giving Dean an ignominious death in the very first hunt he goes on without Chuck's interference.

I headcanon that Jack gave Sam hero's luck but not Dean because he wanted Sam to be free of Dean's bullshit.

Death, to Dean- You have an inflated sense of your importance
Death, to Sam- I consider it quite the honor to be collecting the likes of Sam Winchester
Death knows what's up

I created a new blog devoted only to Dean hate 😊 Hope you're doing well
Out of curiosity, when this whole culture around hating Dean started? When I was still in the fandom, around 2015, everyone still loved him and excused every bad thing he has ever done (or ignored it) and lately, I just see salty and bitter people, or those sho admit that canon Dean is horrible so they just follow fanon Dean instead.
When did you start hating Dean? When did we wake up to him being abusive?
I started hating him around season 7 or 8, along with my friend. Something just felt very wrong and negative about him but we couldn’t understand what at the time. The only thing we could point to was his self-righteous nature that honestly pissed me off. Now, obviously, I do know other reasons (thank you @endiness I love you, was a fan since my gotham hyperfixation lol) but hindsight and all that.
So, if you guys don’t ming talking about this, pls interact with the post haha.

(this is a repost)
This has been on my mind lately. First, let me make this clear, this is not a Dean positive post. Do not try to make it so. I understand how Dean came about to be as he is but I do not sympathize with him. I'd be ashamed of myself if I did.
Dean does not see Sam as a person, that is fairly obvious especially in later seasons but that isn't what I have been pondering lately.
I have been thinking about how Dean perceives Sam and how it affects Sam. The best way I can describe it is, Dean sees Sam as a trophy that he has to protect because he was always told he had to.
Going along that thought, I have noticed how much Dean seems (is) resentful of the golden trophy his Father told him to keep safe.
Dean has made sacrifices in his childhood to keep his brother safe and Sam didn't always comply. Which is normal because Sam wasn't aware of these sacrifices. I've been in both Dean's and Sam's shoes and I understand how both feel.
How are you supposed to be grateful for something you don't know about? And it can be painful to make difficult sacrifices with no reward but I have never made a sacrifice expecting praise. It's not why you should make one.
So I see why Dean feels when Sam isn't aware of those sacrifices, Sam was being ungrateful. Sam isn't because when Sam learns about them he holds them in praise, but Dean still isn't satisfied. Because those sacrifices were never about Sam, it was about John and keep his trophy safe.
So it means nothing to Dean when Sam is mentally distraught and needs help as long as Sam is physically well and they can do their job without an issue.
And why Dean doesn't care about Sam the same way Sam cares about Dean.
Sam would rather go on without his brother to respect his brother's wishes of staying dead than to cling onto him when Dean doesn't want to live. Dean accepted his death so Sam had to as well.
When it was flipped, Dean didn't give a damn about if Sam was ready to go or not. Dean refused to let go so it trumped over Sam's feelings.
This is not a one-time thing, Dean is okay with people using Sam's autonomy and makes decisions, deals, with supernatural creatures to keep Sam alive, even if Sam isn't the same person he was before.
Sam can be reduced to nothing but as long as he is physically there and Dean can see him as his little brother, Sam can suffer.
Or how Dean sees it, Dad's trophy is the original and in one piece, I am doing my job. I have nothing to feel guilty about, I am in control.
That is not an older brother protecting his younger brother. That's Dean trying to control Sam and when he can't he manipulates Sam into doing what he wants. That is fucked up and I can never praise it.
Dean should have never been a parent so young and deserved a childhood, but Sam is not the one to fault for this, that is all on John Winchester.

Sorry, didn't realize this was a Destiel post, I thought you were pointing out that Castiel's judgment regarding Dean was clouded by his emotions. Apologies for stepping on your toes.

will never stop being furious at people who act like dean treated jack well, or anywhere close to it. like sorry but i don't forgive y'all for acting like he was the worst thing in the universe and deserved what dean did to him, threatened him with and allowed to happen to him bc your yaoi schedule was disrupted. and since then y'all have somehow gotten worse by acting like it never happened! that man walked in on a kid's self-harm and all he did was yell at him and threaten to kill him. where is the fucking logic. dean can only be imagined as jack's father in a court hearing kind of way. at best he's the uncle or grampa your parents don't ever let you be alone with.

I honestly can't even rewatch the show at this point because my Dean hate is so profound. I'll rewatch moments with the characters I enjoy, and Sastiel, but a full rewatch just isn't possible for me anymore. I wouldn't enjoy it.
I’m always so fascinated by the difference between fanon and canon; you really have no clue what a show is about from fandom, and so often what fanon focuses on is fucking sinister when you look at it
like, now that I’ve watched a fair amount of SPN I’m so disturbed by the irony in the fandom talking so much about the violence of the show retconning John’s abuse and forcing reunion and forgiveness on his sons;
-talking about how chilling it is to end up in Heaven next door to your abuser and no actual atonement or resolution for the hurt and abuse...
But you would NEVER in a million years know from interacting with the majority of SPN fandom that Dean is abusive to Sam; it is doubly erased by the actual show not giving a shit, AND by fandom erasing and justifying Dean’s abuse.
Honestly the way Dean treats Sam makes me see fucking red and I cannot believe how much the idea of Dean being a wonderful nurturing gentle older brother is just accepted Fanon??
-obviously Dean does have those attributes to some degree and he clearly loves his brother deeply! He can be loving and sweet when he wants! He’s an abuse victim himself and it’s clear where he learned it from! That’s part of why fanon is so FRUSTRATING; Dean IMO is actually a complex and realistic portrayal of an abusive person -he’s not some cackling irredeemable villain consciously bent on abuse...
-but the show never criticizes his right to control his brother through guilt, manipulation, and violence, and fandom just takes what the show says at face value and doesn’t ever deal with Dean’s abusive behavior because it’s uncomfortable.
Dean: I yelled at and punched Sam because he disobeyed me and could have gotten hurt/ because I was scared for his safety/ literally just because I was mad and felt like it/ blah blah
Fandom: omg he loves his brother so much! Protective Mom!Dean 🙃 why isn’t Sam more grateful?? He ate Dean’s Lucky Charms 😢👿

I'm so here for your tags
PSA: Dean punching Sam after Meg was exorcised in 2x14 was not a cute or funny thing. Sam had just gone through the harrowing and horrifying experience of being possessed, and the first thing that happens after he's freed is having the person he loves and trusts the most in the world punch him in the face. Face punching is nothing to sneer at. You can kill someone by punching them in the face, even once. Snap their neck, or break a bone and drive it onto their brain. Probably other things. It was a horrible thing for Dean to do.
