I’d like to think that Cas getting sent on the mission to hell to save the righteous man was an act of hubris by Naomi. at that point, she had been brainwashing and reprogramming him for millions of years. Cas was always a little off. he paid too much attention to the bees and flowers. he made friends with dinosaurs and snails. and his worst crime of all: he made an effort to understand humans and learn from what he thought was God’s most beautiful creation. every single time he got too close to feeling, she wiped all of that out of him and the cycle began anew. I’d like to think that by the time the mission to go to hell rolled around, she thought that she had made the perfect solider fit to be part of a garrison and an important mission and it had been a long time since Cas last rebelled. she thought that she had perfected her method and Castiel was her greatest success. she wanted to show off her success. but she never considered that cas would experience love strong enough to endure manipulation, because angels just aren’t built like that. what she thought was her greatest success became her greatest failure. cas was always a little off, and always a little different, and no matter how hard she tried naomi couldn’t change that.
