"Twist and Turns" by Nnenna Okore at David Krut New York
David Krut Projects New York City is pleased to present Twist and Turns, Nnenna Okore’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.
Tumblr media
The title of the exhibition draws attention to the sense of dynamism and movement in this selection of Okore’s most recent sculptures - continuing her exploration of material through a laborious hands-on creative process gleaned from the traditions of West African art making.
Raised in Nigeria, Okore’s affinity for tactile and gristly elements from the semi-urban environs of Nsukka in south-eastern Nigeria, have inspired a body of works that broadly focus on transformation and regeneration of mundane ecological and man-made objects. Through visual subtleties, she is able to present the fluid and delicate attributes of the physical world, triggered by aging, death and decay. She embraces biodegradable materials laced with memories and histories of her past; and submits to the use of several organic forms delicately articulated in an interwoven manner to reflect the quintessence and mystery of life cycles. The familiar yet abstract sculptural forms rely heavily on materials including newspapers, cloth, plaster and hessian, which were acquired mostly in her Fulbright year abroad. These materials metaphorically reference social, historical and environmental interconnectedness of our collective experiences as mortals.
By default, Okore responds to the movement and malleability of her mediums and processes, allowing them to lead her. Her drawn-out processes of threading, fraying, tearing, teasing, twisting, rolling, layering and dying are derivative of domestic Nigerian tasks that she mastered while living in the country. Through her work, she reveals impermanent earthy attributes of organic and twisted forms. Her intuitive approach to process begets intricate and unhindered layers of the process and materials. The undulated nature of Okore’s work further accentuates the extraordinary panoramic dance between the art and the gallery’s unique ambience. The result is an intriguing display of spellbinding ethereal forms.
Nnenna Okore is an Associate Professor of Art at North Park University, Chicago, where she teaches Sculpture. She has received numerous international awards and been exhibited in many prestigious venues, including October Gallery, London; Museum of Art and Design, New York; Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil; and Art Twenty One, Nigeria. She received the prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award in 2012, which resulted in a year-long project in Nigeria. Her works and interview were recently featured in the July/August 2013 issue of Sculpture Magazine.

THE BENEDICTION OF SHADE II: JOBURG CITY OF TREES
David Krut Projects Johannesburg is pleased to present The Benediction of Shade II, a group exhibition featuring a large selection of artists who have engaged with the figure, idea or metaphor of the forest or the tree in different ways and through various media.  Also running as a subtext through the exhibition is the interplay between nature and the urban environment, and Johannesburg in particular.
Artists include Beth Armstrong, Lynda Ballen, Willem Boshoff, Mischa Fritsch, Bob Gosani, Dillon Marsch, Stephen Hobbs, Gawie Joubert, William Kentridge, David Koloane, Jason Larkin, Carla Liesching, Khehla Chepape Makgato, Ramarutha Makoba, Maja Maljević, Andrew Munnik, Lorenzo Nassimbeni, Robyn Penn, Senzo Shabangu, Sean Slemon, Nathaniel Stern, Chris Swift and Quinten Edward Williams.
A City Of Trees
Joburg is known for its trees, boasting an estimated 6 million of them, and is reputed to be the largest man-made urban forest in the world.  However, Joburg was established on typical Highveld terrain, with no naturally occurring trees. Trees were planted in large numbers in Joburg’s early years in the area surrounding what was to become Parkwood (where DKP is situated), in order to supply vast amounts of timber to the booming gold mining industry. As the northern parts of the city became suburban, the multitudes of trees were generally retained, as is still evident in the older, tree lined suburbs, and their names.

Faith47 is what's known as a 'street artist'. In fact, she's far more than that.

David Krut Projects, Parkwood, is pleased to present Equinox, a group exhibition of new works by artists with whom we collaborate.   For those who missed the Joburg Art Fair in August, this will be your chance to view the latest prints to come out of David Krut Print Workshop (DKW) at Arts on Main, as well as a number of unique works. David Krut Projects invites you to celebrate the passing of winter. Equinoxes occur twice a year, at the time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth’s equator, making night and day approximately equal length the world over.  In the Southern Hemisphere, the Spring equinox this year falls on 23 September. Equinox showcases work by Deborah Bell, Senzo Shabangu, Diane Victor, William Kentridge, Maja Maljević, Sam Nhlengethwa, Lorenzo Nassimbeni, Robyn Penn, Quinten Edward Williams and Stephen Hobbs. The exhibition runs from 25 September – 25 October 2014 at David Krut Projects, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue.

Saturday Talk by photographer Jason Larkin at David Krut Bookstore 151 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood, Johannesburg.
Larkin is internationally recognised for his long-term social documentary projects, environmental portraiture and landscape reportage. His immersive process and slower approach to journalism result in comprehensive bodies of work that reveal and frame important social, economic and political issues. His work is subtle and layered and often concerned with contextualising present realities through historical legacies. Articulately spoken and passionate about public engagement with his subject matter Larkin will be discussing his project Tales From The City Of Gold, which focuses on the legacy of the mine dump as a long ignored aspect of Johannesburg. Anthropological in its approach, this project is the result of living in Johannesburg for two years, observing the ordinary and extraordinary nature of life alongside the dumps. Focusing on the coexistence between past and present allows a unique perspective on the actions of previous generations and reveals that impact on the society and environment today. Tales From The City Of Gold was printed both in South Africa as a bilingual publication and as a monograph in Europe.   Exhibited across South Africa, the series was shown at Flowers Gallery, London, in early 2014.   Larking has furthermore been awarded various grants and prizes, including the PDN Award for Tales From The City Of Gold; and a Pulitzer Grant for crisis reporting. For more information, please view http://jasonlarkin.co.uk/ Larkin will also be discussing recent projects and latest explorations of the mining strikes as well as life in the areas surrounding Rustenburg.

The Johannesburg Art Gallery stands to potentially be demolished or re-purposed due to its state of decay. What is this saying about art and architectire in society and the acknowledgment of heritage? Artist Stephen Hobbs' current exhibition, The JAG Snag, is an on-going installation in the basement area of the more recent extension of the JAG which, in some sense of irony, is now decaying and rotting due to water damage.
Tonight is a public debate about the future of JAG... between artist Stephen Hobbs, Prof. Alex Opper and Gauteng Institute for Architecture's Clara D.C. Almeida. MTech Architecture students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will also propose recent building designs as an option to re-purpose the building, or areas of the building.

The Atrocities-Foca BosniaFrom Hester Finch's exhibition Alone in Berlin currently showing with Jessica Carlisle in London
"The Atrocities may at first glance seem like peaceful landscapes, but on closer inspection the intensity of their saturated colour quickly becomes oppressive. As with all Finch’s landscapes, the atmosphere feels electric, the air charged."
