Vasco da Gama is pleased to present its new number 3 uniform for the 2023-2024 season. The shirt pays homage to the legendary Camisas Negras, the Carioca Champions of 1923, and the profound impact that these athletes, black, poor and working class, brought not only to Vasco, but to the whole of Brazil and the world.
So today is the 120th anniversary of existence of the Brazilian team that I support, Vasco da Gama. Vasco has a long history and it’s the second team with the most supporters in Rio de Janeiro. It has a long tradition and it was the first team ever to allow black people to play in a period of time in which there was (there is still, but) much racism around Brazil. And Philippe Coutinho played for us, sadly not for very long as we was “sold” to an international team when he was really young (he was sold to Internazionale, it was in 2010, I even remember when he barely played). If today Philippe is a great player, that’s because of his Vasco da Gama roots. He made this post on instagram telling how grateful he is for our club. I am literally happy cause Vasco has been for ages having financial crisis and corruption in the administrative part. Anyway. It makes me happy that a great star like Philippe made sure he wouldn’t ever forget his roots. In his instagram post he says:
“Thanks to @vascodagama for one more year of history. I am really happy and grateful for having lived for more than 10 years in this club!”

Even though Vasco da Gama was a “mixed race” team, they were called “portuguese team”. They played using a black shirt with a red Cross pattée on the center, and it was proposed by one of its founders, José Lopes de Freitas. The club would never change its colours: black, white and red, because they were present in the Portuguese navy. The black and white represents the idea that anyone of any race or social origins, portuguese and brazilians, would play in the club in equality and without discrimination.
