Once a little boy went to school. One morning The teacher said: “Today we are going to make a picture.” “Good!” thought the little boy. He liked to make all kinds; Lions and tigers, Chickens and cows, Trains and boats; And he took out his box of crayons And began to draw.
But the teacher said, “Wait!” “It is not time to begin!” And she waited until everyone looked ready. “Now,” said the teacher, “We are going to make flowers.” “Good!” thought the little boy, He liked to make beautiful ones With his pink and orange and blue crayons. But the teacher said “Wait!” “And I will show you how.” And it was red, with a green stem. “There,” said the teacher, “Now you may begin.”
The little boy looked at his teacher’s flower Then he looked at his own flower. He liked his flower better than the teacher’s But he did not say this. He just turned his paper over, And made a flower like the teacher’s. It was red, with a green stem.
On another day The teacher said: “Today we are going to make something with clay.” “Good!” thought the little boy; He liked clay. He could make all kinds of things with clay: Snakes and snowmen, Elephants and mice, Cars and trucks And he began to pull and pinch His ball of clay.
But the teacher said, “Wait!” “It is not time to begin!” And she waited until everyone looked ready. “Now,” said the teacher, “We are going to make a dish.” “Good!” thought the little boy, He liked to make dishes. And he began to make some That were all shapes and sizes.
But the teacher said “Wait!” “And I will show you how.” And she showed everyone how to make One deep dish. “There,” said the teacher, “Now you may begin.”
The little boy looked at the teacher’s dish; Then he looked at his own. He liked his better than the teacher’s But he did not say this. He just rolled his clay into a big ball again And made a dish like the teacher’s. It was a deep dish.
And pretty soon The little boy learned to wait, And to watch And to make things just like the teacher. And pretty soon He didn’t make things of his own anymore.
Then it happened That the little boy and his family Moved to another house, In another city, And the little boy Had to go to another school.
The teacher said: “Today we are going to make a picture.” “Good!” thought the little boy. And he waited for the teacher To tell what to do. But the teacher didn’t say anything. She just walked around the room.
When she came to the little boy She asked, “Don’t you want to make a picture?” “Yes,” said the little boy. “What are we going to make?” “I don’t know until you make it,” said the teacher. “How shall I make it?” asked the little boy. “Why, anyway you like,” said the teacher. “And any color?” asked the little boy. “Any color,” said the teacher. And he began to make a red flower with a green stem.

the more i think about it outside of the “oh i want them to be together” the more i just. understand aziraphale. honestly i would leave too. knowing i’m given a chance to change something for good, knowing everyone can be safe moving on, i would not be able to just stay. he feels responsible and terribly optimistic and its his fatal flaw.

genuinely the most incredible good omens theory ever. holy shit please read the whole document.
The Magic Trick You Didn’t See: Being An Analysis of Good Omens Season 2
(or: Neil Gaiman, Your Brain is Gorgeous But I Have Cracked Your Sneaky Little Code And Have You Dead To Rights*) (*Maybe)
***
Soooooo I just spent the last 48 hours having a BREATHTAKING GALAXY BRAIN EPIPHANY about Good Omens Season 2 and feverishly writing a fuckin16,000 word essay about the incredible magic trick that @neil-gaiman pulled off.
Yes, it’s long, but I PROMISE your brains will explode. Do you want to know how magic works? Do you want to know what Metatron’s deal is (I’m like 99% sure of this and it’s EXTREMELY FUCKING GOOD)? Do you want to know about the Mystery of the Vanishing Eccles Cakes and the big fat beautiful clue I found in the opening credits? Do you go through the whole inventory of Chekov’s Firearm & Heavy Artillery Discount Warehouse?
Here is the essay, go read it: https://docs.google.com/document/d/193IXS11XN46lziHRb6eUpM17yK0BQkRqke1Wh64A_e0/ When ur done u can tell me I’m an insane crackpot, and u know what, i won’t even be offended
In case you don’t know whether you want to bother reading the whole enormous thing on google docs, I’ve put the first couple sections of it under the cut. JUST TRUST ME OKAY, HEAR ME OUT, THIS IS VERY EXTREMELY COOL, NEIL IS GOOD AT HIS JOB–
Keep reading

if I was a demon I would genuinely gnaw my arm off in jealousy because not only did crowley get free roaming access of earth (aka not stuck in a dirty grimy dimly lit basement) but he got to eat food and get drunk and wear nice clothes and take showers and not have bugs coming out of his mouth and a bf and even when he consorted with an agent of heaven and got booted they STILL offered him his job back and a raise. meanwhile I’ve been stamping papers for the last 5000 years under a flickering light in a puddle chugging hellfire

Crowley's hearing "I can finally make you good enough to deserve Heaven"
but Aziraphale's saying "I can finally make Heaven good enough to deserve you"

Jeff Bezos I love you so much and everything you do. Captilism is great and so are you. I love amazon and minimum wage! You are truly the best man ever... however, that elon musk is certainly trying to overtake your throne. How Awful! If only there was some way to gain more ally's against musk, and show your true standing as best person ever... oh wait! I have an idea! what if... you allowed for good omens s3 to be made after the strike is over? wait.... I'm hearing something from my antifa spies... they say that they will work for YOU if you bring this season 3 into being. Isn't that great? This is certainly and offer you can't refuse, mr bezos.

The thing is, I don't think Aziraphale thinks of it as changing Crowley at all. To him, Pre-Fall Crowley and Demon Crowley are the same person, kind and fun and sweet and cool and equally beloved. So to him, there should be no difference whether Crowley is here on Earth or up in Heaven with him, he'll still just be Crowley, and at least this way they would be safe and protected.
All the while Crowley sees it as Aziraphale's long-term love and acceptance being conditional (like God's that was already ripped away), that Aziraphale has just been slumming it with him being a demon bc there wasn't anything they could do about it, and that he's jumping at the chance to fundamentally change Crowley the first chance he gets.

Here is the thing I will say about Good Omens season two, and which I've been thinking about ever since season one.
Everyone's abuse and their response to abuse looks different from everyone else's. The straw that breaks your back may not yet break someone else.
It's ok to be ahead of someone else. It's ok to have a different take on the right thing to do in a given moment. But the no that might be a no, or might really be a not yet, except the person saying no still thinks they mean no?!?
You have to let people choose. You have to let people change their minds later. You have to understand that the rejection of your invitation doesn't make them deserving of ongoing suffering. You don't have to forgive them, later, but you can't also punish them, now, or you're proving the point of the system you're trying to leave.
Unconditional love is unconditional.
Recovery isn't linear, and escapes aren't always parallel.
You might not get there together in the end, but getting out is the first step. If someone isn't ready or able to conceptualize leaving, then you do no one any favors by at least not saving yourself.

i want to be so very clear i will tolerate no hate towards aziraphale because. he may have fucked up and been in the wrong but his choice is very in character and well-intentioned! to be clear if there is not an EXCELLENT apology in s3 before they get together there will be hell to pay but ultimately aziraphale's choice came from a genuine want to fix things and make them right-- he's trying to be selfless in choosing to go back to heaven to change what made him so disillusioned with it in the first place, with or without crowley. he didn't think through or understand the implications of asking crowley to become an angel again, but considering aziraphale's warring interests- the selfish part of him that loves crowley and wants to stay with him being married and happy forever vs. the dutiful angel who loves god and wants to help and nurture humanity, he truly believed he was going to do good. i think aziraphale's journey in s3 is going to be him realizing the inherently corrupt nature of heaven and hell and learning to separate his identity from being an angel and see in shades of grey.
and to be clear i have soooo much sympathy for crowley!! i love him to bits and i was crying so hard for the finale! but i really think the aggressive, angry stuff about az is a little unfair considering the brainwashing and abuse he suffered in heaven and i am confident in neil gaiman's ability to redeem az and allow him to grow <3
