People of the Galactic Horde (the OGs)

Since I'm working on a Horde Prime origin story, it was inevitable that one day I would have to come up with designs for his species aka the original spacebats. And well, it was a fun challenge!

(click/tap to have a better look!) My first attempt at drawing other bats was with the High Priests of the Four Temples - the most influential and powerful people on the planet, also known as Anillis'/Prime's teachers :)

See that last guy? That's the emperor of the original Galactic Horde! Though after his unexpected early death his wife had to become the new Prime. Gladly, Horde World was not left without a future heir to the throne^^

Fun thing is, I never planned on making designs for Anillis' parents, since they never appear in the actual story + even the twins don't remember what they looked like. But idc making fanparents is fun! (In my vision Horde Prime inherited the death stare from his mother and the sly misleading smile from his father >:} )

I also had to design tons, and I mean tons of episodic characters of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Now after all this training I'm ready to fill the backgrounds with bats :3

Some general notes on the people of the Horde under the cut

Every spacebat is born with a white face. Any deviations were rare and considered a type of skin condition

Facial markings slowly appear once baby bats hit puberty. When spacebats' white faces were seen as blank canvases, the facial markings were their life journey drawn on said canvases. The markings were seen as the real window to the soul. Having no marks as an adult was simply outlandish, people of Krytis even had a belief that such bats "had nothing behind their soul" and thus could not be trustworthy

Facial markings (as well as ears) came in many forms. In ancient times one could tell in which of the four original provinces a person was born by simply looking at their faces. Nowadays it became nearly impossible to guess someone's homeland this way (mostly everyone are people of mixed descent), but to those curious this is how bats used to distinguish one another by their markings:

North - straight lines across/all over the face (e.g. the emperor)

South - wavy lines across/all over the face e.g. (the High Priestess of the Southern temple)

West - straight minimalistic lines (e.g. horde clones)

East - wavy minimalistic lines (e.g. the empress)

Hair never held much cultural significance on Krytis, so the styling was only a question of one's personal preference and fashion trends. Some bats (mainly from the south) saw no point in having hair whatsoever - those would choose to go bald or shave parts of the head to better show off their markings

Everyone had one set of eyes. Only local deities were sometimes depicted having 3 and more eyes. And yes, their eyes and teeth do glow in the dark

I wanted to make colorful bats to futher emphasise their whimsical and peaceful nature :) Well, if u think about it many poisonous creatures are colorful too...

I wouldn't be myself if I didn't say anything about local fashion. I don't have my own concepts at hand sadly, just references, but my main inspiration for the fashion of Krytis are late 90s-early 00s futurism and cyber aesthetic. Here and there u will also see smth similar to mall goth or streetwear style, but it's mostly something what young blood were into

Some bats like the royal family and council members would wear more classy and regal clothes but still more or less modern looking. Such choice of attire was espeically important to the empress, who, unlike her late husband, stayed far away from religion and magic and made it the main goal of her campaign to weaken the influence of the religious community and push for scientific and socio-cultural progress

Hi back at you! I am doing alright, much less online than before because job and irl friends and all - but doing fine - So the answer is yes, life happens, not necessarily badly, but spoons are in limited supplies x)

I've been obsessing on that pre-canon storyline, which has become my own, very personal almost too personal to be a prequel story, for waaaay too long - which means I'm very fine xD

I have a lot of little sketches on old mail XD

For a long while this side blog was just an idea floating in my head. I like to organize, and having a dedicated blog for my spacebat art and ramblings sounded nice, but I've never had a side blog before so I held off. Now seems as good a day as any to start the adventure <3

Goodness. This is amazing O.O

The execution is perfect - the aesthetics of the images make me think of ancient posters from the early/ mid-XXth Century - while the whole 'adding noise' to the animation, and the sound appearing 'old' and 'analogue' (non numeric sound, if any of you don't know what analogue means :) ) makes it seem like an old commercial from the early days of TV in the second half of the XXth century, filmed in technicolor - but it's animation you know (I'm huge on XXth century aesthetic xD ).

The ART, the monochromes are so calling to mind old propaganda posters, it is magnificent, and scary, and I love it (had I seen this on TV in another life on another planet i'd have signed up to follow right away. I am weak OK. Don't judge me please, it's Prime we're talking about and it's Anillis).

And they have NO eyes. Except Anillis at the moment the voice over asks if he wants to become a cult leader. He is the ONE who has eyes. Followed by Prime's eyes alone.

Now, my heart sunk and shattered a little when I saw the "give up their lives for you" picture. Hec-Tor. My heart cannot stand this and yet you know I'll come back for more - another clue. Damn if my whole brain and being are on a worry loop for him. I have theories of what will happen to him.

And this is making all this tie together SO achingly poetically. Beautifully painful. (the melancholy)

The parent giving away their child. The person giving away their money/ possessions.

The one in 'give their bodies for you' - I have a HUGE theory here O.O

He's the one I think he is, right? He is not giving his body to feed Prime like Clones do. He is giving his body to help Him be born, is it not? (no obligation to answer here, but I cannot hold back on that one. My heart just stopped beating for a second when I saw this one - the cables, the lines on this one's face, the hair. This is not a Clone, and yet there are cables. Not saying more because I just don't want to potentially be right and throw a spoiler if I guessed well) My heart is shattering by the second.

The Clones, then. And Hordak. All of Prime's victims, one after the other, appearing there as if they were no victims, but people willingly offering him all he needs to rise. To 'help His people'.

Before Anillis appears, thinking, with his sweet, innocent face. He seems so uncertain. 'Don't you want to be a cult leader?' It feels to me like the last time he will really have that innocence in him. A last remnant of that young Bat who has lived through so much (At this point, my heart is but shards barely held together by the love and care I have for the twins).

One eye, then three. The bigger one, closing.

Small Anillis looking up at his grandiose reflection as Prime, his body language that of not exactly a child, but almost. He looks like he is admiring, curious, staring - can i become this? Could I become more? Can I see myself another way than the way I am seeing myself now? (you know what I mean here, right?)

While the Prime reflection is opening his arms, inviting, grandiose and confident. Can I be this? Can I change who I am, so I become confident?

The close up - Prime, smiling and Anillis who still looks so innocently considering this - is this an idea of me? Or my true reflection? Can it become?

"You could fill that void" the voice over says at this point. And then. The reflection and Anillis touch hands. Contemplating the idea more seriously, it seems.

"Here's how." And as their fingers entwine, this, is no reflection anymore; This, is no wishful thinking, day dreaming of becoming something, someone more. A dream, becoming reality. A wish, fulfilled. (note on my AU but just for 'linguistics': 'Orama' which is the name of my Bats' origin planet, means 'wish' in ancient Greek)

Anillis has made his choice.

The reflection and him entwining together, in a chilling image - reflections are not supposed to pass through the other side - the boundary, has been breached. The limit, has been crossed.

There is no going back.

You have given me such a GIFT in this work, I can barely explain what my emotions are - so MANY.

It is chilling, yet beautiful, I cannot take my eyes off it. I have already replayed it a number of times. And by being both chilling and beautiful, between fear, and fascination, it captures Prime's essence quite well. Because these, are the first two emotions He woke in me, when I first saw Him.

And then, there is the whole story of your society (not naming too many things in case you'd have new / future readers reading this :3 ), the whole story of the Kur Twins, in one short movie. Short, but that contains SO much. And yet, it is a call to want to know more. The whole story, is implied here, and it only gives me more wish to read it all. In all the details (but I'll be patient. I'm a slow person x) )

Emotions, themes, metaphors. And an execution so perfect that it feels to me, like I am watching an old recording, that has been found long after a civilisation has been extinct. This, feels like an ancient recording from long ago, a trace of History, another poem, to the beautifully tragic story of the Emperor of the Known Universe.
