On this day in 1945, a man named Desmond Doss, who was a conscientious objector, saved 75 wounded soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa at Hacksaw Ridge. Despite being unarmed and running through heavy fire, Doss successfully got the soldiers to safety and then lowered them 400 feet below to the rest of the troops one by one. Doss preferred to refer to himself as a conscientious "cooperator". Although he was raised religiously, he felt the need to do his part and save lives rather than take them. On October 12, 1945, Doss was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman. Truman reportedly told Doss, "I'm proud of you. You really deserve this. I consider this a greater honor than being president."

Steve Miller Band - “Overdrive”
From the album Sailor
(October 1968)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
Great album covers are a dime a dozen, but great album *backs* that actually surpass their front covers are more rare. The back to the Steve Miller Band’s Sailor is one of the best of this breed.
And one of his immaculate first five, musically
Capitol ST 2984 if you were wondering.
