      ❛    huh?     ❜      she’s  confused   ;   they  knew  it  would  be  cold  today,   and  smart  &  kind  as  always,   mahiru  had  made  sure  her  gloves  were  on  before  they  left.   she  looks  at  them  now  as  they’re  mentioned         a  brow  furrows.   she’s  still  wearing  them?  they  don’t  look  like  much  more  to  her  than  clothing  &  they’re  definitely  not  cold  !   x-ray  vision  has  been  long  ruled  out,   so  it’s  with  concern  rather  than  bewilderment  that  her  brow  stays  the  same  as  before.   she  stops  walking  to  take  her  in ;   she  looks  the  same  as  always?   but  she  looks  closer  when  they’re  both  still,  &   maybe  she’s  a  little  more  red? 

     she  misses  her  own  point  when  she  places  the  back  of  a  gloved  hand  to  mahiru’s  forehead,    a  query  through  a  frown  to  accompany  the  action,     ❛    mahiru-chan,   are  you  feeling  okay?   are  you  sick  with  warts?     ❜

may i interest you in a swan,

     it’s  a  tap  on  the  shoulder  that  has  grabbed  her  attention.   she  more  than  glad  to  give  it.    it  seems  that  -  (  and  this  is  a  split  second  deduction,   the  sort  she  should  be  able  to  make  !  )    -   although  they  don’t  lower  their  voice,    but  they  do  lean  further  down,   that  this  is  a  secret  !   just  between  them,  in  this  super  crowded  arcade   (  it  always  sort  of  is  !  but  the  whole  park  is  this  way  &  at  least  there’s  drinks  here  ),   and  like  with  anything  else,   she  is  intently  listening  ;  a  lean  in  herself  until  the  distance  between  them  is  hardly  a  thing.    it’s  a  long  time,  feels  like  one,  anyway,  something  that  is  familiar  yet  not  catching  her  eye  in  it  -   she  can’t  ever  really  tell  what  they’re  thinking,  though  she  squints  anyway  ;  worth  a  try  !  -  &  nothing  is  said,  &  she’s  never  been  patient,  so  she  cants  her  head,     ❛    what  is  it,   tendo-san?  did  you  run  out  of  money?  here,  i            ❜     she  doesn’t  wait  ;   she’s  looking  away  and  digging  into  her  bag  blindly  before  even  finishing,   trailing  off  into  a  mumble  of  ‘have  some’  and  less  than  a  second  of  effort  later  ‘somewhere’.

     she  couldn’t  really  see  in  her  bag  to  begin  with  in  the  low  light,   but  she  certainly  can’t  with  what  is  lifted  aloft  between  them  (  had  their  hand  been  behind  their  back  the  whole  time?  an  oversight !  ),    right  below  her  nose   ;  she  has  no  choice  to  take  it  in,  and  before  she  makes  heads  or  tails  of  it’s  white  head  and  tail  (  do  they  have  tails?  ),   it  is  clarified  for  her.    a  swan?    she  blinks  at  it,   hand  freed  from  the  depths  of  her  bag  and brought  to  hold  onto  it  as  well   ;  it’s  tiny,  and  so  she’s  careful  to  mind  their  space  where  her  fingers  move  to  angle  it  better.   something  warm  sits  in  her  chest  as  she  takes  it  in,   and  then  it  blooms  in  a  way  that  makes  her  feel  full  when  she  looks  back  to  maya,        ❛   you’re  letting  me  have  it?   really!?     ❜

     ❛             &  then  it  was  like ,    WHAM,     BAM,    y’know?     ❜     animated  as  ever,   each  sound  effect  is  punctuated   (   reenacted !   )   ;   a  fist  to  the  sky,   another  to  follow.    it’s  easily  that  she  regales  the  other  with  tales  of  the  last  few  days,    grin  plastered  bright  even  in  pauses,   joy  poorly  contained  even  in  impersonations  of  grim  things,   far  and  few  between  they  are         the  superhero  show  was  super  light  !  a  nice  change  of  pace,  &  she  thinks  that         well,   what’s  she  doing  just  talking  about  it?

      a   dramatic  posturing  :   arm  outstretched,  palm  presented  as  a  ‘halt’,     ❛      i  have  no  mercy  for  villains!    ❜      &  then  it  is  clenched,   familiarly  so,  as  though  around  a  blade,      ❛    time  to  settle  our  score          ❜      an  expectant  pause  and  a  cant  of  her  head   (  like  she  were  there,   like  she  should  know  the  lines  )  ,    space  left  for  her  to  enter  the  scene.
