Some kids forget their teachers have lives outside of their job. When I was in school I was horrendous. I would often skip classes, come in drunk from the age of 13, leave school and get on the train to literally a different country (England to Wales which I suppose isn’t that big of a deal).
One of my kids thought they were being all solid today skipping lesson and I caught them on the corridor. Apparently I wouldn’t understand as I was obviously a goodie two shoes. Kept him out the lesson and spoke to him about some of the things I used to do in school while sitting there and getting him to do Science work. Kept stopping talking when he stopped working.
Gave his book back to his teacher at the end of the lesson and she was thrilled. Nothing like hearing some unexpected things about your teachers to make you sit there and do your work!

Another kid comes up to me yesterday.
“I heard they told you a maths joke and you didn’t laugh. I’ve got a better one!”
“What do you call a disappearing 2D parrot? Polly gone (polygon)”
Okay kid, I’m liking that originality there, well done haha!

One of my kids was telling rubbish jokes today. I asked if he had a maths one for me.
“I ate a clock yesterday. It was very time consuming!”
At least it’s better than the 7, 8, 9 joke!

One of the most important things they don’t teach you for being a teacher - try your best to take an interest in what your pupils like.
I ended up watching the F1 today because one of my kids is extremely into it. Never been into any sports myself but figured I’d give it a go. Well, I loved it! Can’t wait to talk to them about it tomorrow!
Give it a go, you might just find yourself a new interest!

Let’s start with something that happened yesterday as it’s a Saturday today so there’s nothing eventful today! One of the kids I work closely with was stuck in isolation for skipping lessons. Got asked to take them out for a little wander around for a few minutes if I had some free time as they struggle sitting still for long periods of time. Ended up taking them out three times over the day just walking the corridors and talking about anything. Had such a laugh. He was telling me about his plans for the weekend, a girl he likes, his mum going out and his plans to have friends over, the argument he was having with one of his friends. Mad how much kids open up when you’re close to their age and you just give them some of your time.
Apparently I’m getting called ‘the naughty child whisperer’ by some other teachers because the kids that are my favourites are the ones that everyone has already given up on. Honestly, they’re the most entertaining and the most fun to be around but people just can’t be arsed with their occasional craziness. Treat these ones like your mates, they’re more fun to be around than half the staff in my place!

So I decided to start a blog to just generally write about the things that happen in my life being a young teacher and to vent about all the other random shit in my life. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and qualified 3 years ago and had a great time with it. Last year my mum got ill and I was looking after her a lot and wanted to stay in my school as I didn’t want the extra stress of leaving and having to find somewhere else (I was there as maternity cover). But the only job they could offer me permanently was a teaching assisstant so I took it. Well fucking hell it’s been an eye opener!
Not expecting anyone to read this so I’ll just keep posting all these little stories for myself to look back on.
