the problem of like. me trying to actually write an original fantasy story is that 1) i have to Actually Worldbuild and 2) i have to come up with a good magic system
(but prince, you say, you dont have to do these things actually)
TRUE YOU ARE RIGHT but i need to for the kind of story i'm envisioning. and for most of my 20+ years i've always been playing in other people's fantasy lands with other people's characters and it is actually very difficult to come up with something that doesn't suck and that makes sense. and holds up to scrutiny
i'm not trying to become the next tolkien or anything but i wouldn't mind to have a world that is actually fun to explore + makes people go "wait i want to know more"
augh

the thing about reading really good fantasy series w an interesting magic system is that it makes me think abt my own fantasy world and its subpar magic system that i haven't quite figured out. but maybe i can learn something from orogeny

ok so im a little under 200 pages into the obelisk gate rn and i have SO many questions. holy shit
but first: SCHAFFAAAAAAAAAAAAA AUUUUUGH IM SO EXCITED
i hope we get. flashbacks to his time w damaya because i am sooooooooooooooo interested in their relationship. i am less interested in the schaffa we have now altho i want to know who (or what) is inhabiting him - is it the kind of consequence alabaster is facing? do guardians have an equivalent to stone eaters like orogenes do? ALSO the fact that it seems that. he needs to "eat" something from orogenes is so interesting. alabaster had essun identify the stuff in him that orogeny (and the obelisks) are made of, so i wonder if guardians can siphon that? is that how they stop orogenes from doing anything?
AUIUUGH i have sooooooooooooooooooo many thoughts. things r coming together
also literally i think i was right re: the moon getting blasted and that's why there r seasons now (did proto-orogenes do it? was it a mistake? was it on purpose?). it was proposed in one chapter that the obelisks are like. a "fix". so i wonder if they do what the moon is supposed to do? but they also store orogene energy? also i may have missed how many obelisks there actually are but theres been . uh. 4 already? the onyx, the ruby, the topaz, and whatever the pink one that alabaster has is from. unless im forgetting some from the first book
also nassun chapters rahhhhhh
i get like. why essun trained her the way she did but man she def made mistakes as a parent. and i dont even want to talk abt jija. unfortunate for nassun that both of her parents suck ALSO SCHAFFA GET AWAY FROM HER. i know jija heard of "found moon" as a place for her to get "fixed" but im hoping its one of those like fake conversion camps where they ACTUALLY train orogenes but like. not like fulcrum. altho if schaffa is there i have my doubts LMFAOOO why do they need guardians if not to control and dominate orogenes
but also again. schaffa is having some. um. interesting moments
ANYWAY IM SOOOO HYPED FOR THIS im so excited. we r learning so much

ok my thots have marinated a bit since i finished it.
as a whole i think the series started to plummet a bit after book one. part of it is my own displeasure w stories that go from being very small in scope to very large, but i think so much of book 2 and book 3 just like. amounted to "hurry up and wait." like while i got through book 2 really fast and as a whole i don't have too many complaints about it, it very much feels like it's a book that's meant to get from point a to point b. it isn't it's own thing the way i'd like it to be, and then book 3 suffers from awful pacing issues because of this. the first 2/3rds of the book were a slow slog for me to get through because i could tell it was just building up to the ending (and the ending didn't even. save it for me. aw)
i felt like.....like we lost the characters a bit. hoa's chapters, while intriguing to show what happened Before and what led to the yeeting of the moon, felt like "nothing chapters" for much of them. i feel like a lot of it could have been truncated, and i didn't especially like hoa's (well, houwha's) voice.
nassun, too: i liked her very much in book 2, but in book 3 i felt like some of her characterization got stripped away or just. wasn't there. so many of the side characters felt underutilized to me, too. i would have loved to see more tonkee, or for lerna to have a purpose besides "fridged for [essun's] pain." the whole thing of castrima marching toward rennanis felt sooo unneeded and like nothing happened. the pacing of the first book was excellent, the second one flew by, but book three just dragged on and on and on.
and while i like the idea of the earth being sentient and "evil" because of the yeeting of the moon, it went a step too far when nassun and houwha perceived the earth "talking." i'm sorry, but hello, little enemy is so cringe LMAOOOO. the earth should've stayed a little less sentient
and i think honestly the ending just. fell flat. like i'm glad essun turned into a stone eater, i feel like that's where her arc should have culminated, but nassun's arc was just. meh. it doesn't help that i didn't care for her chapters that much by the middle of book 3, and while i rationally understand her sudden switch to bring the moon back in orbit, it felt. anticlimactic. the ending probably hits harder for parents or people who can see themselves in nassun's shoes, but i'm neither of those people so the kind of thing jemisin was going for was hard for me to conceptualize.
like don't get me wrong, as a whole i really liked this series!! the worldbuilding was insaneeeeeeeeeeee like i love the idea of orogeny (even if i think the magic system got a bit. muddled. and def could use some clarification), i liked the cast of characters as a whole, i think jemisin's prose is amazing and i think the way she touches on issues of oppression and slavery and racism is handled very well, but. But. the perfection of book one was not met by book two or three and i'm a little sad about that.
the stone sky is still a solid 4 star read to me, but i think it's the weakest in the trilogy. i'm def going to be reading more jemisin after this tho and i can't wait to see what else she's cooked up
um. so if i said i didnt like the stone sky that much,

PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here
Some of y’all love marginalized stories but you don’t give a fuck about marginalized creators and characters, and it shows. Like damn

How many stand-alone works do you own written by a single author?
take "stand-alone work" to mean books not related as a series, the series can count as one work (ie me owning all of NK Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy and The City We Became would count as two stand-alone works, even though it's 4 books). Owning multiple copies also only counts as 1 stand-alone work, sorry edition-hoarders
