tfw you have a crush on the woman who destroyed your hometown and now she stops by the infirmary where you work every day to bicker incomprehensibly with her ex-metamour-slash-baby-daddy who also triggered the apocalypse while he slowly turns to stone and is eaten by a rock person. but sometimes you just gotta shoot your shot ig

Schaffa in The Fifth Season vs Schaffa in The Obelisk Gate gives the same energy as “How my parents were with me” vs “How my parents are with their grandchildren”

For anyone who loves geology and volcanology and also fantasy I would totally recommend reading The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. Basically the world no longer has a moon, which in turn shattered the world and now it's very unstable. There are what they call Fifth Seasons which are basically volcanic winters. There are a lot of earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. And it's theorized by one character that the characters called orogenes (the characters with powers) actually exist as a form of evolution to try and keep the human race alive because their powers deal with the earth. One character is so powerful that he ripped the continent in half! This of course is causing a volcanic winter that would most likely destroy all life on the planet and it would last for possibly millions of years.

Even if "hasn't yet committed genocidal slaughter" is a low bar to hop, other communities haven't even managed that much. You'll give credit where it's due.

Queer reads: The Broken Earth trilogy, by N.K. Jemisin
To wrap up the fantasy portion of the list of books I think you might enjoy, I bring you day 21: The Broken Earth Trilogy, by N.K. Jemisin.
Tumblr media
First of all, a disclaimer. I never made it to The Stone Sky. It was on my to-read list, but these books are intense, and so it’s still on my to-read list, but now I’ll have to reread the first two books over again to get there.
These are post-apocalyptical fantasy, and the apocalypse here is not fucking around. The earth itself is broken, people are scattered, and magic is a thing. Our main character, Essun, starts the book by finding that her husband has killed their son and kidnapped their daughter, and readers, it goes downhill from there.
Essun is a queer character, and there are queer relationships in these books, but this is dystopian epic fantasy, and it’s not a light read.
I’d recommend this to people who thought A Song of Ice and Fire should have had more queer characters, cooler magic, and wasn’t Fantasy Europe, and also was written by a black lady.

Have been blitzing through The Broken Earthtrilogy by N.K. Jemisin and may I just say this woman is a fucking powerhouse of a writer. Rarely have I been so upset at characters without wanting to stop reading. Like, I'm mad at them as people, while being totally engrossed in the story. GRIPPING.

ok so im a little under 200 pages into the obelisk gate rn and i have SO many questions. holy shit
but first: SCHAFFAAAAAAAAAAAAA AUUUUUGH IM SO EXCITED
i hope we get. flashbacks to his time w damaya because i am sooooooooooooooo interested in their relationship. i am less interested in the schaffa we have now altho i want to know who (or what) is inhabiting him - is it the kind of consequence alabaster is facing? do guardians have an equivalent to stone eaters like orogenes do? ALSO the fact that it seems that. he needs to "eat" something from orogenes is so interesting. alabaster had essun identify the stuff in him that orogeny (and the obelisks) are made of, so i wonder if guardians can siphon that? is that how they stop orogenes from doing anything?
AUIUUGH i have sooooooooooooooooooo many thoughts. things r coming together
also literally i think i was right re: the moon getting blasted and that's why there r seasons now (did proto-orogenes do it? was it a mistake? was it on purpose?). it was proposed in one chapter that the obelisks are like. a "fix". so i wonder if they do what the moon is supposed to do? but they also store orogene energy? also i may have missed how many obelisks there actually are but theres been . uh. 4 already? the onyx, the ruby, the topaz, and whatever the pink one that alabaster has is from. unless im forgetting some from the first book
also nassun chapters rahhhhhh
i get like. why essun trained her the way she did but man she def made mistakes as a parent. and i dont even want to talk abt jija. unfortunate for nassun that both of her parents suck ALSO SCHAFFA GET AWAY FROM HER. i know jija heard of "found moon" as a place for her to get "fixed" but im hoping its one of those like fake conversion camps where they ACTUALLY train orogenes but like. not like fulcrum. altho if schaffa is there i have my doubts LMFAOOO why do they need guardians if not to control and dominate orogenes
but also again. schaffa is having some. um. interesting moments
ANYWAY IM SOOOO HYPED FOR THIS im so excited. we r learning so much

Quote
"Daddy," she says again, this time putting more of a needy whine into her voice. It is the thing that has swayed him, these times when he has come near to turning on her: remembering that she is his little girl. Reminding him that he has been, up to today, a good father. It is a manipulation. Something of her is warped out of true by this moment, and from now on all her acts of affection toward her father will be calculated, performative. Her childhood dies, for all intents and purposes. But that is better than all of her dying, she knows.
N.K. Jemisin, The Obelisk Gate
