This is unacceptable and childish behaviour. The very fact that you are all still going on about this days later is not only a waste of time, it’s disrespectful. And what’s concerning to me is your total disregard for discretion. Think of that the next time you wonder why it is the administration doesn’t want its teachers canoodling.

I’ve asked you all to drop this several times. The matter is being dealt with between the affected parties and that should, in fact, be the end of it. If I catch wind of this discourse being continued at length publicly again, you will be formally written up.

Yes, Miss Noble, I would suggest in the future you do just that. Being as you are paid as a professional – as last I checked. It’s great you’ve all developed friendships, it’s encouraged even, but you must remember our dedication is first to the students and the school. Personal alignments should not be taken into consideration. We can’t be seen to be taking sides – that goes for staff and administration. 

But I will say you’ve got my curiosity piqued. Considering your forceful assurance, Miss Noble, one might glean you’ve got something to hide. See that’s the difference between your response – one who is not even involved in this particular grievance, and Miss Cooper – often you’ll find it’s those who are guilty of something that opposes it the loudest. Luckily it’s not your current residence with Miss Tyler being called into question. 

It’s not a rumour, Miss Noble, it’s a complaint. A complaint regarding a rule you’ve all agreed to. The line isn’t being drawn, it was already there. And it is my job to see to it that said line isn’t crossed. I will deal with the situation as I see fit. I suggest you keep your ideas and your sass to yourself. If I wanted either, I’d have asked for it.

A reminder, Miss Noble that I can see this and that we don’t strictly require a music department at Coal Hill. Or an Autumn performance either. 

Last I checked neither of you has been called into question on this matter, which makes it none of your business, so I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself. 

This is a paid school. Parental support is essential for our institution to run at peak performance. As I’ve said to Miss Song, if you’ve got a problem with how we work, you are more than welcome to seek employment elsewhere. I’m sure there’s plenty of positions for questionably qualified music teachers.

Idris narrowed her yes, then gave a slight incline of her head. “Perhaps,” she conceded, before adding, “providing the budget allows and your work ethic remains in tact -- so often teachers slack off when they’ve earned the position. Other institutions might turn their head at it -- but I think we both know I won’t be so remiss.” 

There was a question at the tip of her tongue -- why now? Why suddenly the desire to stay put? Not that Idris blamed her as such, compared to state schools Coal Hill was something of a paradise, but still there was something...

She decided to let it slip, for now, but should she have reason to question Miss Noble’s motives later, well she wouldn’t hesitate. Perhaps it was just ambition -- starting one’s career later in in life, Idris supposed she’d be just as eager to aim high. 

“If that’s all...?” Idris raised her brow, inviting Donna to either address any other issues or leave her office. 

"I'd like to discuss with you the possibility of being employed at Coal Hill as a regular staff member and not a substitute," Donna stated with much more confidence than she was currently feeling. "As I'm sure you are well aware, I recently completely all my credentials, with honours, mind you, to teach music; and this is an area in which I feel Coal Hill could definitely improve upon, and I could help. I am just asking that should a position become available, that you would consider me for it."

Arms crossed over her chest, Idris leaned back in her seat considering the redhead’s words carefully. In all honesty she respected the move. It was brave – ballsy even – to barge into her office and ask for a permanent position. Idris knew her reputation well, and it wasn’t as a kind and giving professional. 

Truth be told Miss Noble was good at her job. She got one well with her coworkers – and more importantly, her students. And Coal Hill’s music department had been short staffed since Mr Ooden retired three summer’s ago. But still there were pros and cons to be considered. 

On the one hand she wasn’t keen on substitutes and cafe workers lining up outside her door in the hopes of a promotion, but on the other….

Clearing her throat Idris leaned forward, propping her elbows on the flat surface of the desk in her best attempt to appear threatening – it was important, as Headmistress of the school she not be mistaken for a pushover. 

“There is something… I wouldn’t be able to offer you a full salary, but the starting salary is above your current pay grade,” It wasn’t a firm yes, but it was the closest Idris was willing to give… for now. “We’d consider this half term as a probationary period – if all parties are content come end of term we will discuss the possibility of making it permanent.” Idris paused, her tone turning serious. “But let me make this clear, Miss Noble – if there are any complaints or indiscretions – if you even so much as glance at the rule book funny you will be asked to pack up your things and leave.”

So... how about lifting the no-canoodling rule? There's so much unresolved sexual tension in the staff room that it's probably even more distracting than not having the rule.

The population of London is upwards of 8.5 million residents. Even accounting for those who are married, elderly, or underage that still leaves plenty of fish in the Thames for them to scratch whatever itches they might have. If my staff can’t find anyone outside of their immediate vacinity to latch onto, perhaps they should seek employment at a less strict and woefully less prestigious school. I hear state schools are always on the lookout for our rejects.
