Taylor Hanson & Wife Welcome Their Sixth Child
Taylor Hanson's wife, Natalie, has given birth to the couple's sixth child. Baby Claude Indiana Emmanuel, referred to as just "Indiana" or "Indy" by his parents, arrived on Wednesday (Dec. 26).
"Claude Indiana Emmanuel Hanson welcomed with love 12.26.18," Natalie wrote on Instagram, where she showed a photo of their newborn son.
"Happy Birthday to my best friend and beautiful wife Natalie," Taylor -- who's on break from Hanson's String Theory symphonic tour with his brothers before it picks up again in January -- posted alongside a photo of his wife holding Indiana. "Overjoyed to share the gift of a lifetime, little Indiana Hanson, born 12.26.2018."
The family shared another picture with People, telling the publication, "Our new little man, Indy, is the best gift our family could imagine. His arrival brings with it a new sense of adventure and excitement for the future."
Taylor and Natalie are also the parents of Jordan Ezra, 16; River Samuel, 12; Viggo Moriah, 10; Penelope "Penny" Anne, 13, and Wilhelmina "Willa" Jane, 6.
Natalie hinted at, but didn't reveal, the pair's name choice for the newest addition to their family in a blog post on Nameberry in November. "Both our top girl and boy choices right now are main characters in George Sand novels," she had said at the time. (Sand published a novel titled Indiana, with a heroine of the same name, in 1832.)
See the photos of baby Indy below.

You need this groovy Noncompliant techno mix in your life now
Noncompliant has some sexy-cool techno bounce going in her mix for WHOLE Festival. It’s the perfect link between midwest techno and the coming queer-focused blowout in the countryside near Berlin.
Press play for some forward moving music (track listing at bottom):
Our friends over at KALTBLUT magazine invited Lisa aka Noncompliant over to their recent podcast. That “midwest techno” moniker isn’t just an in-the-know way to say, erm, which state a DJ came from while name dropping. It’s a byword for a particular breed of DJ who has clocked untold hours in the mud – sometimes literally – making the rave circuit for years on years, often booking their own gigs, hustling their own … cables/everything, and generally surviving on love of the music alone.
But the important thing about that is, you can hear it in the mixing. And we love listening to music that sounds confident partly because it gets us moving and confident ourselves. Oh yeah, and when you know what you’re doing, you can also drop a crowd-pleaser and classic now and then and totally stick the landing, like Lisa evidently did in Detroit at Movement last week:
More where that came from:
Now, yes, America is still recovering from Movement, but Europe has stuff like WHOLE coming up. The queer-organized, queer-focused festival has a massive lineup, partly because it pulls together LGBTQ and open-minded collectives from both sides of the pond. So you get the likes of The Black Madonna (who met Noncompliant back in said 90s rave scene before anyone knew who they were), Dr. Rubinstein, rRoxymore, Shaun J. Wright, our very own Jamaica Suk (also my studio mate), and lots more.
And Noncompliant will shift gears from headlining Detroit to headlining … a massive campsite queer fest.
And you know, for all the sense some people have that somehow queer culture is ‘hyped’ in music right now, the festival scene can still be a place where a lot of people feel uncomfortable, unsafe, and unable to be themselves. WHOLE promises to make a template for how the summer camp-out festival can be something different – not just a dark, smoky club, but a proper outdoor long weekend. And that could inspire all of us.
As KALTBLUT puts it in their intro:
WHOLE is the only festival of this kind in Europe creating an inclusive environment for the acceptance of all gender identities & sexual orientations, in a relaxing, outdoor environment, far from the hectic confines of the city. A festival by the queers for the queers, where feminine representation and persons or colour are not underrepresented, where not only electronic music, but also workshops, performances, and discussions have been planned all along.
Podcast: Countdown to WHOLE festival – Noncompliant [KALTBLUT Magazine]
There’s more music from WHOLE, too, over at KALTBLUT:
And here’s their fantastic promo video:
And you thought everyone in Berlin only wore black.
Check the festival, and maybe pitch a tent, but definitely keep dancing wherever you are in the world:
https://wholefestival.com/
Noncompliant’s track listing
Here’s what you’re hearing. Study up / support artists and buy music! (Every single one of these is an artist and label who could use your support, in fact.)
01. Sharp Felon – Cyber Fex [Lone Romantic] 02. Steve Murphy – Ray Gun [Lobster Theremin] 03. The Hacker – Body Electric (Remastered) [Klakson] 04. Solid Blake – Soap Cube [Seilscheibenpfeiler Schallplatten] 05. Dennis Quin – Love Peace [Soft Computing] 06. DJ Deep – Mandrum Dub [Deeply Rooted] 07. Steffi – 1E-4 [Mistress] 13. Antigone – The Melody (Remix by ROD) [Children of Tomorrow] 14. Robert Hood – Dancer (Remix) [M-Plant] 15. Nikola Gala – Slide B [Teksupport] 16. Big Freedia Sues Choreographer for Ownership of Dance Routines
Big Freedia has sued a former choreographer, seeking a declaration of ownership for choreography and music from the time they worked together.
The lawsuit from Freedia (real name: Freddie Ross Jr.) was filed in federal court last week against Wilberto Dejarnetti, a character on Freedia’s reality television show Queen of Bounce on Fuse, NOLA.com/Times-Picayune reported.
The lawsuit states Dejarnetti worked with Big Freedia and her dance team from 2014 to 2017 on routines for the songs “Just Be Free Intro,” "NO Bounce,” "Explode,” "Shake Session Medley,” "Dangerous,” "Best Beeleevah” and “Drop.”
The lawsuit says Big Freedia ended the relationship last year because “Dejarnetti’s behavior was frequently erratic, and his temperamental nature caused turmoil and strife” within Ross’ team.
The lawsuit says Dejarnetti has sought continued royalties of $500 per month for dance routines that Freedia’s lawyers say were “largely based on and derivative of traditional ‘bounce’ dance movements and other routines Mr. Ross and his dancers had been employing for years.”
The lawsuit also says Dejarnetti has already been paid for his services. The newspaper was unable to reach Dejarnetti for comment.
The lawsuit said Dejarnetti has also claimed to have co-written some songs. Freedia’s lawyers say while Dejarnetti may have been present during the recording, he had no “copyrightable” role in the music.
The lawsuits states Big Freedia tried to reach a resolution with Dejarnetti, but had run out of options for amicable resolution.
In addition to an ownership declaration, the lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Nat Wolff & Alexander Skarsgård in War Drama 'The Kill Team' Trailer
by Alex Billington August 13, 2019 Source: YouTube
"Do I do the right thing and put myself in danger?" A24 has debuted the first trailer for an indie war drama titled The Kill Team, the narrative feature directorial debut of filmmaker Dan Krauss (who also directed the documentary 5B this year). This is based on the same events that inspired his own 2013 documentary also titled The Kill Team, about a young American soldier in Afghanistan is disturbed by his commanding officer's behavior and is faced with a moral dilemma. Described as "an urgent and explosive recounting of one of the darkest incidents in the not-so-distant history of American military exploits." Nat Wolff co-stars with Alexander Skarsgård, plus Adam Long, Jonathan Whitesell, Brian Marc, Osy Ikhile, Rob Morrow, Anna Francolini, and Oliver Ritchie. It's intriguing to see a film addressing the darker side of the American military, and how they often crossed the line in Afghanistan. This looks better than expected.
Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dan Krauss' The Kill Team, direct from A24's YouTube:
Tumblr media
When Andrew Briggman (Nat Wolff), a young soldier deployed during the US invasion of Afghanistan, witnesses other recruits killing innocent civilians under the direction of a sadistic leader, Sergeant Deeks (Alexander Skarsgård), he considers reporting them to higher-ups — but the heavily-armed, increasingly violent platoon becomes suspicious that someone in their ranks has turned on them, and Andrew begins to fear that he’ll be the next target. The Kill Team is both written & directed by American filmmaker Dan Krauss, making his narrative feature directorial debut after directing a few docs previously (including 5B this year) and extensive work as a camera operator / cinematographer. It's is based on his own documentary also titled The Kill Team (2013). This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. A24 will debut Krauss' The Kill Team in select US theaters + on VOD starting October 25th this fall. Anyone interested?

S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: Sarge in Charge — Plus, Season 6's Big Bad Revealed?
RELATED STORIES
Chloe Bennet did tell us there would be swords this season on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And this Friday, a “magical” (?) sabre finally showed up, but in whose hand and for what purpose?
Having saved S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ from last week’s shrike event, Sarge had Mack over a bit of a barrel. Mack came through on half of the deal, by flipping Sarge the keys to his truck. Sarge, though, can only take one of his crew on the mission to prevent the end of Earth at the hand of the shrikes’ “creator,” while also being accompanied by both May and Daisy. Sarge chooses Snow, then warns Mack to not get in their way. Mack agrees not to leave the base… without pointing out that the Zephyr is their airborne base.
During the drive to Nebraska, they watch on radar as a crowd of random, shrike-infested people congregate in the middle of nowhere and explosively transform into a network of those crystalline things, coming together as a tower of sorts. Sarge warns the others that, “She is coming, and everyone you care about is going to die.” But if Sarge can get close enough to the creator, he has… a sword that he plans to drive through her heart. Also, Snow (creepily) reveals herself to be a bit sweet on Deke, who wound up going along for this ride when his tech savvy was needed to fix Sarge’s “shrike repellant.” Deke in turn appreciates Snow’s want to see his soul be… spilled out.
Meanwhile in space: The crew of the ship that Fitz and Jemma helped Izel appropriate has their misgivings about the bucket of bolts surviving a jump, but Fitz is OK with the 50/50 odds. It all turns out to be much ado about nothing, as the ship makes the jump without incident, after which Jemma and Fitz see their home emerge from behind the moon. Izel explains to her new terran friends that she has been searching for artifacts that belonged to her home world. Most recently, she thought they were on Chronica, but that was not the case. That world in turn wound up “destroyed,” though she cops to no culpability. Instead she suggests that she is being chased by her own ruthless nemesis, whom we are left to believe is Sarge. Why is this person dogging her so? “Because I know the truth about him,” Izel says. “I know what he really is.”
Afterward, in private, FitzSimmons concur that the artifacts Izel seeks are the Kree monoliths — which, Jemma explains to Fitz, have all been destroyed. That update  leads into a pretty hilarious conversation about the wedding Fitz missed, how he is jealous of her first husband, and the wedding night prowess of his own that he must live up to/surpass.
As for Izel, what/who is she, really? Because while FitzSimmons unsuccessfully try to get comms working to contact their friends on Earth, we see Izel “mother” a wee shrike, with which she later infests crew member Toad. Toad and his similarly possessed buddy then join Izel and her zombie-like army in the halls, as the ship begins its descent, with FitzSimmons thus far none the wiser.
Back on Earth, Benson relays research suggesting that the creator Sarge has spoken of is a demon named Izel, and that the artifacts she is after are the Kree monoliths. Pax and Jaco, meanwhile, have been detained via chains and the containment pod, respectively. After Pax comes up short with an escape attempt (that nonetheless kills a S.H.I.E.L.D. red shirt), he blabs that Sarge’s plan involves a bomb. That information is quickly relayed to Daisy and May, who confront Sarge. Thing is, he has already armed the bomb and set the truck on auto pilot. And any quaking from Daisy, to stop him, might set it off prematurely. Sarge escapes to the truck roof, where he creates one of those interdimensional portals and uses it to step onto the Zephyr, right where Pax and Jaco are being held. Daisy, May, Deke and Snow, meanwhile, are left behind, quite trapped inside the truck and barreling toward the shrike tower. All while Izel and her ship begin their approach for a landing.
Will Mack shoot down the alien ship, not knowing FitzSimmons are aboard? Will he take out Sarge’s truck before the bomb with a 200-mile blast radius goes off, sacrificing May, Daisy and Deke in the name of a greater good? Will Deke be able to disable the bomb of Sarge’s he just uncovered?
“Collision Course, Part II” is next week!

Tony Awards 2019: The Biggest Wins and Wildest Moments in Photos
We laughed! We cried! We audibly gasped at the sight of Vanessa Carlton! Hosted by a fully committed James Corden, Sunday’s Tony Awards broadcast was truly a gift unto us all.
The three-hour event was exactly what the Tonys should always be: a joyous celebration of musical theatre and the inspiring, diverse community that makes Broadway happen. And this year’s ceremony gave us no shortage of uplifting moments, from Ali Stroker’s beautiful words for theatrical hopefuls dealing with disabilities to Andre De Shields’ long-overdue Tony recognition — though we have a feeling that Baltimore was already plenty proud of its “native son.”
Sunday’s ceremony also gave us plenty of those wonderfully over-the-top moments that always make the Tonys so much fun, including our personal favorite: the beginnings of a brawl between Audra McDonald and Laura Linney. (She may not have started the fight, but McDonald was ready to finish it.)
And while this gallery is technically a collection of the Tony Awards’ “best and worst” moments, we had to stretch real hard to find anything to include in the latter category. Even at its “worst,” Sunday’s telecast was better than most award shows, let’s be honest.
Browse our gallery of memorable Tony moments — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment with your own additions below.

SHADES OF BLACK: DER ROTE MILAN, NUSQUAMA, ONDFØDT, BLUE HUMMINGBIRD ON THE LEFT, OMEGAVORTEX
I wasn’t able to write a SHADES OF BLACK column for last Sunday due to feeling like hell. I felt somewhat better than hell yesterday, and decided to pull this together now rather than wait until next Sunday. I have more new music from the black realms that I’d like to recommend, and will try to fold them into a different kind of round-up later this week. What you’ll find below are songs from four albums slated for release early next year and a mid-2018 promo EP that I’ve just discovered.
DER ROTE MILAN
Der Rote Milan‘s 2016 debut album Aus der Asche was an intense blending of grim ferocity and melancholy beauty, a powerfully affecting sequence of songs that makes their new album also worth close attention. Entitled Moritat, it will be released by Unholy Conspiracy Deathwork on February 1st.
The new album, we’re told, narrates local stories (in German lyrics) based on real events that transpired during The Thirty Years’ War fought primarily in Central Europe during the 17th century:
“A central character is the historical figure Schinderhannes, an outlaw considered by some to be the German Robin Hood. These stories, which take place in the southwestern Germany’s Hunsrück region, are connected to the present through themes of freedom, fear, and fighting oneself in the face of death”.
“Die Habsucht” is the new album’s opening track. Slow crystalline notes and shimmering ambient sound lull the listener into a moody yet blissful reverie at first, but the band rudely terminate the dream with a typhoon of pummeling percussion, frenzied/jolting riffing, and caustic shrieks. Filaments of melody gleam through that violent surge before it subsides, replaced for a time with beautiful strings that emerge over a heavy bass-and-drum rhythm, reintroducing that early feeling of dreamlike wistfulness… before the music boils again.
Moritat will be released in digipack-CD and red vinyl editions.

NUSQUAMA
Nusquama is a new collaboration among members of Laster, Fluisteraars, and Turia. If you know the music of any of those Dutch black metal bands, you’ll know that whatever they’re doing together in Nusquama will be well worth hearing. And what they’ve done is to record a six-track album named Horizon Ontheemt, which they’ll perform in its entirety at the next edition of the Roadburn festival. To quote from the press release we received:
“There’s a melancholic – sometimes almost resigned – feeling ebbing and flowing throughout the songs, befitting of the story behind the NUSQUAMA name. The word is Latin for ‘nowhere,’ but, more importantly, it was the word used by Thomas More to describe both the necessity of a hopeful alternative, as well as its impossibility. The story goes that it was how he referred to what would become of Utopia”.
Nusquama, I’ve since discovered, was the working title of More’s most famous book all the way up to publication, when its title became Utopia — Greek for “no place”, which also resonates in the distinction Plato drew in The Republic between the city of his birth and that other city “whose home is in words, for I think it can be found nowhere on earth”.
What I’ve heard from the album so far is the track below, “Vuurslag“. Hard-hitting drumwork and warm, vibrant bass notes provide a compelling undercurrent for a wash of scintillating guitar vibrations, whose melody indeed has an unearthly quality, with a beguiling brightness that contrasts with the fireball of pain that emerges in the vocals. The soft guitar notes that echo across an interlude in the song make the music even more mesmerizing, and there is a sense of grandeur that comes through, in which melancholy and wonder seem equally present, when the main line of the song resumes.
Horizon Ontheemt was mastered by Greg Chandler at Priory Recording Studio. It will be released by Eisenwald (CD and LP) on March 22nd, with a cassette tape edition coming from Haeresis Noviomagi. Pre-orders will be launched in January.
(Thanks to Miloš for alerting me to this track.)

ONDFØDT
The Finnish black metal band Ondfødt released their debut album, Hexkonst, in 2014. Their new one, Dödsrikets Kallelse, will be released on January 25th by Immortal Frost Productions.
“Den Sanna“, the first song to be revealed from the album, gets the pulse pounding from the very beginning. There’s a heavy pounding and bounding undercurrent in the song that you can feel in your spine, and a whirling, dervish-like quality in the riffing, along with a soul-spearing gloriousness in the vibrating lead that soon surfaces. With further intensity added by the wild savagery of the vocals, the song overpowers the senses with a feeling of unbridled freedom, though it’s lined near the end with a sense of ominous peril.
This is the kind of track that seems to end too soon, picking you up and sending you aloft and then suddenly leaving you up in the air, and falling. Fortunately, it’s very easy to just play it again (and again).
(Thanks once again to Miloš for recommending this track.)

BLUE HUMMINGBIRD ON THE LEFT
Occasional NCS contributor Conchobar wrote me about this next track by Blue Hummingbird on the Left, whose members are within Southern California’s respected Black Twilight Circle. Their name is a translation of the name of the Aztec god Huitzilopochtli, and as Conchobar wrote to me, the track below —  “Hail Huitzilopochtli” — is “as ferocious as its namesake”.
The song comes from the band’s debut album, Atl Tlachinolli, which will be released on February 8th by Iron Bonehead Productions, Nuclear War Now! Productions, and Crepúsculo Negro. It strikes fast and hard, the battering-ram drum rhythms laying into your skull as the fiery guitar work sets the air boiling in your lungs and the cacophonous, reverberating vocal tirades put fear in your heart. It’s an electrifying and utterly warlike experience, segmented by massive, neck-bending grooves and with an atmosphere that does begin to seem mythic.

OMEGAVORTEX
Omegavortex is a new name for the German black/death metal band formerly known as Ambevilence, and based on the promo EP you’ll find below, it’s a well-chosen name.
The four tracks on the EP are raw mixes of new material that will be included on the band’s debut album, on which work is still progressing, and these four are absolutely ferocious. These may be raw mixes, but the sound is extremely powerful, and the thrashing energy that rushes through the music is almost breathtaking. The drumming is fury incarnate; the riffs are a blood-boiling, mind-warping representation of chaos and lunacy; the soloing is hot enough to melt lead; the scalding vocals are terrifyingly bestial.
The technical capabilities of the performers are especially impressive when the band are moving at lunatic speed, but the songs deliver more than speed and savagery. There are potent, head-moving hooks within these songs as well as brute-force, heavy-weight rhythms and flurries of strange and sorcerous melody that give the music a distinctly occult air, and the band do switch things up enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The EP is an evil, four-track thrill-ride that will kick the adrenaline in your bloodstream to the max and put shivers down your spine. Can’t wait to hear the debut album — though I can’t imagine what they can do with these four songs in finished form to make them any stronger.

Game of Thrones Series Finale Photos: The Mad Queen Surveys Her City
If you’re sitting on any last Game of Thrones theories you haven’t shared, it’s time to air ’em out: We’re at T-minus five days to a final farewell to Westeros.
But will the series finale also mean the capital-E End for Jon… or Daenerys… or the handful of main characters still standing after the carnage-filled Battle of King’s Landing? And who’ll ultimately win control over the realm?
Good luck trying to glean any info from these new photos, which HBO released Wednesday. In typical Thrones fashion, HBO isn’t telling us much about what’ll happen by the time the credits roll — though Episode 6’s trailer seems to show Daenerys ruling over the burned-out husk of King’s Landing in the aftermath of the big fight and people like Jon and Tyrion being horrified by what has become of their khaleesi.
Thrones‘ series finale airs Sunday, May 19, at 9/8c. If theorizing/worrying/hating on the finale has become too much to bear, try to focus on what comes after it: a  two-hour, seemingly really cool behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Season 8 that will air Sunday, May 26 — aka a week after the finale — at 9/8c.
Click on the gallery above — or go to it directly here — to see the scant photos from Sunday’s episode, then hit the comments with your thoughts.

Stormy Daniels Reenacts Spanking Trump — and Sarah Paulson Is Loving It
Full disclosure: What you’re about to witness would be highly disturbing, if not for the joy it brought American Horror Story‘s Sarah Paulson.
President Donald Trump’s alleged mistress, adult film star Stormy Daniels, appeared on Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she recreated the supposed Forbes magazine spanking incident using a copy of her new autobiography, Full Disclosure. Paulson, who served as Kimmel’s first guest, stuck around for Daniels’ sit-down, and was clearly delighted by what she got to witness in person. “Please God, let him be watching this right now,” Kimmel said.
Daniels, who kept quiet during her first appearance on Kimmel following the 2018 State of the Union address, said she now had “no bleeps to give.” When Kimmel asked what it was like when she and the former Apprentice host “made love,” she fired back. “Gross! What is wrong with you?” she asked. “I laid there and prayed for death.”
Later, Kimmel asked Daniels about Trump’s alleged “Toad from Mario Kart“-shaped you-know-what, asking her to choose which most resembled the president among a display of orange mushrooms. (Yes, really!)
Press PLAY on the video above to watch Daniels’ segment in full (if only to watch Paulson react to every outrageous moment), then hit the comments with your reactions!

A Problem With The Modern World
September 10th, 2018 12:22am
I am not sure how much lyrical continuity Jason Pierce intends to have in his music, but it’s not much of a leap to think that the Jane in “The Morning After” is the same Jane he was addressing in “Hey Jane” on the previous Spiritualized album from 2012. Whereas “Hey Jane” was largely about the singer’s perception of her and her influence on him, “The Morning After” is more of a character study in the style of Lou Reed’s “____ Says” songs. Here we learn that Jane’s from a difficult but affluent family, that she’s unlucky in love, and she’s in terrible health. There’s a lot of affection in the way Pierce writes about Jane, but also a bit of distance – it’s a little like how you might talk about an ex you still have some feelings for, or a once-close friend you’ve fallen out of touch with.
“The Morning After” is a rocker, and while the arrangement has the usual sort of Spiritualized density of instrumentation, there’s a relative lightness to it that stands apart from Pierce’s usual work. A lot of that comes from a groovy lead guitar part that gives the track a stoned ‘60s vibe, but it’s also in the way the music seems to unravel around the time the horns start getting wild and skronky in the final couple minutes. You get a sense of a life falling apart, but it doesn’t sound bleak or heavy. It’s more like a celebration that gets out of hand.
