“The sun is horrid. I do not approve of it, it should not exist.” Not that whining about it is going to make anything better but it made them feel a little better and that was enough for the moment. They turn to peer at her, looking like some sort of avenging angel shrouded in glare with the sun beating down on her back. She reminds them of Lilith with burning wings of light like this.
Instead of answering they just roll over to poke through the supplies in the technical, looking for where the binoculars have gone off to. Upon finding them they’re quickly handed off to her since they can’t really use them anyway, then they slide out to join her on the shaded side of the vehicle.
“We need some bandits, never thought I would say that. They would have some gas.” Normally bandits were nothing but worthless annoyances but right now they really needed some to show up. They’d make some sorry excuses for Vault Hunters if the sun managed to off them when nothing else had managed yet.
She couldn’t, nor would she, blame them for complaining about all this. Compared to how it was underneath the tarp, the heat outside is positively terrible. It’d be hard to say if they could take fifteen more hours of this, or even a quarter of that, with how bad it was already.
Despite that, Maya manages to flash a thankful half-smile as she takes the binoculars from them. It’s only marginally harder for her to convince herself to clamor up onto the flat roof of the technical, but she does so in time. Up there, she’s under a whole lot more direct sunlight, but she didn’t have much of a choice.
❝ We need some bandits, or we need a whole lot of luck. ❞ She mutters from her perch, situating herself so she can scan the horizon. The only stroke of luck they’d had in this whole trip was that when they came to a stop, it was at the very peak of a large dune. From up there, she could see pretty much anything in the valley.
Maya’s silent for a long time, focused on inspecting each and every dune in the distance. So far, all she’d seen was sand, sand, sand, and as expected, the occasional spiderant. She can’t help but sigh in frustration after awhile, bringing a hand up to rub her eyes and wipe her brow, before she starts again. In all honesty, she was about to give up and start disaster planning.
❝ This... isn’t working. There isn’t anything for god damn miles. At this point, we’d be better off— Wait. ❞
Just as she’d opened her mouth, there, much further in the valley, was a moving dot. It was just a spec initially, but the more it comes into view, the more hopeful she gets. There’s an audible click from the binoculars as she zooms in further, and then an inordinately excited laugh from her as she confirms what she’s seeing.
❝ I guess I spoke way too soon; There’s actually a technical out there! ❞

The merriment from Mordecai’s expression faded a little. It didn’t take a genius to see the way she looked at him, the slight down-tilt of her eyebrows. Pity wasn’t the word he’d put to it, not anymore. They hadn’t really had the chance to just… sit down and talk, had they?
“S’fine. One hell of a way t’get my attention, though.” He half-chuckled and did his best to get them up the stairs of HQ and into one of the dorms upstairs. To be honest, he was a little flattered that she even wanted to hang out with him after… everything. He’d become a little ornery as of late, so prickled and pickled that the others had chosen to leave him alone. “Dunno if it was th’best move, considerin’ you’re not gonna remember much of this tomorrow.” He eased her onto one of the beds and took a seat beside her. “Not too good at holding liquor, are ya?”
@cloud-kill
Each movement she made up the stairs required a rather intense amount of focus, something that showed in the way she was practically glaring down at their feet. Whoever invented rakkale ought to be hanged. Well, if they weren’t already.
❝ I’ll... admit, I maybe din’t plan this out very well. ❞ She returns his half-chuckle in kind once they were at the top of the stairwell.
‘Maybe’ sure was one way to put it. As he sat her down, she silently cursed herself for thinking any of this was a good idea. Maybe one day she would stop listening to half baked thoughts her brain conjured up. Not today, but one day.
❝ Umm... No. ❞ She flops backwards with a laugh, laying her arm over her eyes, ❝ I don’t drink a lot. ‘s not really my thing. ❞

Why oh why had Zer0 agreed to go on this trek? Probably because it was easy, they could nap in the technical a bit, and keeping Maya company was never a bad idea. It was just poor luck that had them stranded out here under the baking sun, with no water in sight and no real way to keep cool long term. Fifteen hours was a hell of a long time to be stuck out under the baking sun and the suit Zer0 wore was not really helping in the overheating department.
The temperature they could manage actually, it was the drying out that was going to be the problem for them. Too long in an atmosphere like this can damage or kill them via dehydration alone.
While she fusses with the empty technical, Zer0 sprawls out in the shade, blanking out in the heat for the moment. There was little to be done except wait; either a bandit technical showed up which they could either steal or drain, or night fell and they could go hunting for something to assist. As it was, they could do nothing to improve the current situation.
“Just leave me out here, go on and save yourself now. I am a goner.” Bit of melodramatic moaning but they really were slowly cooking in here. Keeping cool is rather difficult when you’re covered in kevlar and armor plates.
To say Maya felt bad for them would be an understatement. She was, after all, partially responsible for landing them in this situation. A frown crests over her face as she leans up against the side of the technical, tarp still lifted just the slightest.
❝ You know damn well that i’m not going to let you fry under here. ❞ Concern fringes her tone, ❝ If anything, i’m going to end up keeling over first. This sun is ridiculous... ❞
Her upbringing in cool, windy mountains really didn’t help in this situation. She wasn’t built to handle this much direct sunlight, but it wasn’t as if she had any choice. Her only options were to keep looking for a way to get off this dune, or pray to whatever god was listening for a miracle. So far, neither were working out very well.

❝ Listen, are the binoculars back there with you? I want to see if I can climb up onto the roof of this damn car and look around again. ❞
If she was lucky, which she usually wasn’t, she’d spot something other than sand and spiderants.

★ Starter for @numericalassassin
    90 hours.
That’s how long it took for Pandora to complete a single rotation; 45 hours of day, and 45 hours of night. It was probably the most difficult thing to adjust to, even moreso than the lifestyle the planet demanded. Two non-Pandoran years had passed since Maya first arrived on the planet, and she was still fighting with the challenges that extended rotation presented.
As it were, those challenges liked to manifest in very cruel ways, such as in today’s case.
Crossing The Dust was never an easy feat, but having a Technical and a little bit of company made it easier. Her and Zer0 were tasked with locating a very rural testing facility for experimental supplies, ones that would keep Sanctuary in the sky for longer. Without a fast travel, they’d unfortunately just have to leg it in the vague direction of the co-ords and pray. It was a boring job, but one that they’d thought would be easy... Until the Technical ran out of gas.
So now, here they were, stranded in the middle of the desert with no way to get moving. When nightfall hit, they’d be able to go search for some new wheels, but that wouldn’t be for another 15 hours at least. 15 hours of having to sit around and try to not die to heat exhaustion...
Maya took to poking around underneath the hood of the vehicle, double and triple checking to make sure nothing else was the problem. Turns out that learning some basic mechanics from Ellie was a worthwhile effort. The sun beating down on her back eventually got to be a bit too much, so with a sigh, she shut the hood and stepped back.
❝ Everything else seems alright but... God, why didn’t I bring that extra gas can. I feel so stupid. ❞ Another sigh, and a wipe of the brow, she steps around the vehicle and into the relative shade it casts on that side.
Tumblr media
❝ Zer0, are you still alive? ❞ She asks, lifting up the tarp that was covering up the flatbed, ❝ Don’t tell me you’ve gone and cooked to death under there. I really don’t need another thing going wrong out here. ❞
