The Spillway Swimming Pool Feature Explained

We’ll be writing a new article every week until Summer starts, and every week we will cover some of the most popular swimming pool features you can incorporate into your custom pool build. This week we’ll be going in-depth into the “Spillway Swimming Pool Feature.”

The Spillway

The spillway is a classic swimming pool feature that allows one water body to spill or cascade into another. Some examples of spillways you may have seen are the features that enable spas to spill into the main pool area. Sometimes the simple features are the best ones! Not only does this create a calming visual effect, but the sound is truly blissful.

The Stacked Spillway

The Stacked Spillway design allows the water to cascade down a stair-like design. It’s easiest to imagine water spilling down a flight of stairs; these stairs tend to be much smaller in size compared to regular size stairs, though. Negative Edge Spillway

One of the best spillways, in my opinion, is the Negative Edge Spillway. With this feature, you utilize the environment and the surrounding area of the property in most cases. It works best when the pool gets constructed on a slope. The higher the pool is built on the hill, the better the effect. The whole idea is to make the spillway look as if it’s spilling into infinity. That’s the other name to describe this spillway too, which is the Infinity Edge Pool Feature. The photo we’ve included will give you a better idea of just one of the ways this ultra-modern pool feature gets utilized. The Negative Edge Spillway doesn’t necessarily have to use environmental height, either. Some designers use this design to create a mirror-like effect that is breathtaking. When you combine the Negative Edge Spillway with beautiful lighting, this feature is comparable to a work of art, rather than just a swimming pool feature.

So, if you’ve ever heard of the infinity swimming pool design, you’ll get the gist of the Infinity spa design feature. The infinity swimming pool feature works best when another body of water sits below it. The body of water allows the mind to imagine that the water is ultimately flowing into it. It’s not always necessary to have a large body underneath the infinity edge, but it sure does add to the effect. The Negative Edge Spa Spillway utilizes the swimming pool as its body of water. It can look spectacular when done correctly.

Reflection Spillway

We briefly touched on the swimming pool feature above. Considered a Negative Edge design, and it is pretty amazing when done correctly. It’s comparable to a mirror when the water is undisturbed. This design allows water to overflow on all sides, which gives it its mirror-like reflective quality.

What to Expect When Considering a Pool Build in Southern, Nevada – Code

It’s January! Summer is right around the corner! Now is the time to start planning and building your custom swimming pool with Clarity Pool Service of Las Vegas. We’re Southern Nevada’s premier pool contractor and pool maintenance service, and we want to help you build the ultimate swimming pool, even if you’re on a set budget.

The first hurdle you’ll want to get past is zoning. It’s a good idea to know about your zoning and laws before embarking on the journey to build your dream pool. Here at Clarity Pool Service, we want to make the process as stress-free and painless as possible. We’ve compiled some of the Clark County (Southern Nevada) Building Code that might help as a reference when researching your home zoning and applicable laws.

22.20.010 – Adoption.

(A) That certain document, three copies of which are on file in the office of the County Clerk of Clark County, being marked and designated as the “International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, 2018 Edition” (referenced herein as the ISPSC) published by the International Code Council, together with all tables of contents, definitions, articles, tables, indexes, examples and appendices, is hereby adopted and made a part of this chapter, the same as if it were fully set forth herein, except as amended by the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and by this chapter.

That certain document, three copies of which are on file in the office of the County Clerk of Clark County, being marked and designated as the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, together with all tables of contents, definitions, articles, tables, indexes, examples and appendices, is hereby adopted and made a part of this chapter, the same as if it were fully set forth herein, except as amended by this chapter.

Name. The Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, as adopted and amended by this chapter, is known as the Swimming Pool and Spa Code of Clark County. It is reference herein as “this code.”

Conflict. In the event there is a conflict between this chapter and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, or a substantive difference in the meanings of wording included in a topic or subject area common to all three documents, the wording of this chapter shall supersede the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Residential Code and govern.

In the event there is a conflict between the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, or a substantive difference in the meanings of wording included in a topic or subject area common to both documents, the wording of the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 International Residential Code shall supersede the ISPSC and govern.

(Ord. No. 4608, § 2, 8-21-2018) 22.20.020 – Administrative provisions.

The provisions of Chapter 22.02 known as the “Building Administrative Code of Clark County” shall serve as the governing rules and regulations for the administration, organization and enforcement of the Swimming Pool and Spa Code of Clark County.

(Ord. No. 4608, § 2, 8-21-2018) 22.20.030 – Violation and penalties.

It is unlawful for any person to erect, install, alter, repair, relocate, add to, replace, use, or maintain swimming pools, spas, or water features in this jurisdiction, or cause the same to be done, contrary to or in violation of any of the provisions of this code. Maintenance of any swimming pool, spa, or water which was unlawful at the time it was installed and which would be unlawful under this code if installed after the effective date of this code constitutes a continuing violation of this code.

Any person violating any of the provisions of this code shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor. Each such person shall be deemed guilty of a separate offense for each and every day or portion thereof during which any violation of any of the provisions of this code is committed, continued, or permitted. Upon conviction for any such violation such person shall be punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. Whenever in this chapter any act is prohibited or is made or declared to be unlawful or an offense or a misdemeanor, the doing of any such required act constitutes a violation of this chapter. Any day of any violation of this ordinance constitutes a separate offense.
