"I don't envy her poor teacher. Then again, we put her through her paces when we were in fourth grade," Ushi says. She has always been somewhat of a teacher's pet, but there's no denying that she could get very chatty when she was younger. Plus add Scott, Stiles, and the other children in that class- yeah, they were more than a handful.

"I think the kitten'll be okay. The person taking care of the kitten for now is someone who's rescued kittens before. They just don't have room to permanently take in another one, which is why we're taking it in."

She looks back at a previous text to check for the answer to Scott's final question.

"Underneath some playground equipment. Kamado said they waited for a while to see if the mom came back, but they had to go to back class and didn't want to leave it to die. Oh- she's sent two more pictures."

This time, it's of the kitten curled up in one of Kamado's arms, then hidden beneath her jacket. Kamado almost never takes off her jacket, which helps her not be too suspicious. Kamado looks like a younger version of Ushi, except with pin straight hair and a longer, slightly thinner face.

"I'm just glad the semester's almost over, that way we can actually have the time to take care of it."

" that ... sounds like a full - on disaster, " but he says it with the uptick of a smile, because he can't pretend that he wouldn't do exactly the same thing. in fifth grade, he'd rescued an injured bird from the schoolyard and kept it tucked in his hoodie until the end of his next class, then biked it straight to deaton as soon as the last bell rang.

when she shows him the picture, his whole expression softens. " probably a week or so, maybe a little less. he'll need to eat at least every three hours, and make sure they keep him warm. really warm. i'll skip last period, if i have to. " not that his attendance record can afford him that, but one more class won't make a difference. " where'd they find him? "

"Peel, please."

Chin in hand, Ushi watches Dustin work. The sun's rays stream through the window, bathing him in warm light. He reminds her of some famous statue, like The Thinker or David. But so much more alive.

"Thank you."

OPEN.

"peel? or no peel?" he's cutting up apples for the both of them to share. he personally has no preference, but it's always nice to check.

"There's a Taiwanese bakery in our town that has all the best ones. I could never choose!"

Ushi raises her hand and high fives Elle. She's so excited that she forgets that they still don't have a home to go back to.

"Thank you. I don't know about happiness, but I'm convinced that contentment is a cat napping in the sun. Warm and at ease."

"That sounds lovely, actually. I would like to try that. What's your favorite baked dish with Taro in it?" Everyone knows that Eleusine's got a sweet tooth a mile wide. It could loop around camp twenty thousand times. At the very least.

Ushi's nose crinkles as she thinks and it's, honestly, one of the most adorable things that Elle has ever seen. It makes her smile.

"Yeah!" She grins. "You've got yourself a deal!"

Huh. A slow thing that creeps up on you, and suddenly you notice it's there. Ushi's right about that too. "She is, yeah, but you are too. That's a very apt description."

A beat, and then: "I think I should have asked Jami what kind of animal happiness is." Then again, maybe Ushi knows the answer to that one.

"I'm unsure. Let me check." Ushi sends a text to Kamado and quickly gets a reply. "Looks like one of her classmates' has spare kitten formula at home, and their mom will look after the kitten until we pick it up."

Another text lights up her screen, and Ushi lets out a half-laugh, half-groan.

"Oh boy, they're going to try and hide it from the teacher in the meantime. Let's see how long that lasts." A moment, then- "Kamado won't let it get hurt. She sits in the back of the class, and her friends think that will be enough. As if anyone can miss the whispering of a gaggle of fourth graders. I bet they won't last ten seconds."

She turns the phone towards Scott and shows him the ginger kitten.

"How old do you think this lil guy is?"

he's fishing around in his backpack, looking for the notes from last night's assigned reading that he hadn't finished, but the words stray kitten are quick to pull his focus. " yeah — definitely, walk - ins are totally fine. my boss doesn't really mind. he's not gonna be there until later, anyway. " notes in hand, his backpack's tucked underneath the desk. " you think it'll be okay until then? the kitten, i mean. "

"Hi, Scott. Um, you work at the vet clinic, right? My sister just texted me saying one of her friends found a stray kitten. Is it possible for me to drop in and visit after school, or does the clinic take appointments only?"

"Taro is a kind of root. It's lightly sweet. Not quite a palette cleanser, but in that realm of flavor. I prefer it in baked dishes over drinks, but taro milk tea is still very good! But if you don't want caffeine, there are other things you can drink with boba, too, like juice, smoothies- lots of drinks go well with tapioca pearls."

Ushi's nose crinkles as she thinks.

"I've never heard of nibbits before. Maybe we should try new things together! Nibbits for me and bubble tea for you."

She smiles at Jami's words.

"I've always thought of love as a slow thing that creeps up on you, and suddenly you notice that it's there. -Which is like a cheetah. Huh. She is right."

"Taro?" Eleusine echoes. "What's that?" She takes a moment to think but finds that she hasn't heard of that particular flavor or shape or, well, you get the point. But it has to be good, considering it's one of Ushi's favorites!

"Very true. Um, I'm good with pretty much anything. Salty or sweet. But Nibbits were the first thing to pop into my head for some reason. You know those thin yellow and pinkish red chips about the size of your fingers? I'm pretty sure I liked them because there was a huge squirrel on the packaging when I was a kid. Though they also come in rings. I think that packaging had a cheetah on it."

A beat and then: "Jami said something really profound the other day, actually. She said that love is like an animal and when I asked which one, she said: 'a cheetah, duh, 'cause it comes quick!' and you know what? She's right."

EXPERIENCE: 11 years on tumblr, but longer if you count other platforms

PREFERRED ROLEPLAY TYPE: I love fluff and angst. I'm venturing into spicy stuff with Ushi, but Kamado dislikes touch so no spicy for her in her college verses. I love doing threads where there's character/relationship exploration, as well as fantasy, mystery, and adventure threads.

PET PEEVES & DEALBREAKERS: This hasn't actually happened online, but irl people constantly say that Okinawan people are Japanese. Nationality-wise, they are because Okinawa is a colony. Indigenous Okinawan people exist like the Higa girls and myself. I know most people aren't aware of that, so I'm not mad towards people who are learning. But I've had people irl call me "Japanese" just to rile me up, which thankfully has been remedied once I really sat down to them and talked about it.

PLOTS OR MEMES: I prefer plots, but I'm down for sending memes to my partners!

LONG REPLIES OR SHORT REPLIES: I tend to write at least 2-3 short paragraphs unless we're doing a purposefully short back and forth dialogue. Or if my brain won't cooperate.

BEST TIME TO WRITE: I tend to write more at night but atm I'm down to talk/plot anytime.

ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE: Ushi is based more on me, while I was trying to create Kamado as a muse who's different from me, but it always ends up a blend of myself and the character they become.

"Thank you."

Mai's words concern her. Ushi hasn't seen any monsters, and she's carrying a variety of safety and traveling charms, but that's no guarantee that monsters have stayed away.

"No monsters, Mo- Ma'am."

She's suddenly tempted to stay here forever, ignore the rest of the world and be the child that Mai's always wanted. But Ushi could never be Luke, just like Mai could never be her hanshii or anmaa. Maybe someday she can spend more time here, help Mai out, or simply keep her company.

"I'm sorry if this is overstepping, but is it okay if I take a shower?" Despite the house's warmth, she's started to shiver. "I'll make it quick, I promise."

"It's okay, it's okay." She shepherds Ushi into the home, a gentle hand on her back before she shuts the door. "You're soaked through, you poor thing. You can borrow some dry clothes. You know, I had a feeling someone would be here today, it's so strange...."

She shakes her head, chasing the twisting road of thoughts away, and leads Ushi into the house. She's grabbed a fresh pair of sweatpants and is looking for a sweater before she pauses and looks at Ushi again.

"Are you safe?" She peeks back towards the front door. "Were there monsters after you?"

Send  “  who  did  this  to  you  ?  ”  for  the  sender  to  find  the  receiver  injured  and  demand  to  know  who  did  it. Status: Accepting! @lovehoned

She didn't even make it to her own apartment.

Ushi's a crumpled heap at the bottom of the fire escape. The pounding in her ears is so loud that it drowns out Robin approaching and the beginning of Robin's question. In fact, it takes a few seconds for Ushi to even realize that Robin is in front of her. When Ushi replies, it sounds far away to her own ears.

"Sorry, what?"

Ushi stares wide-eyed at Robin- well, with the good one. Her left eye is bruised and swelling more by the moment. There's no way she can hide all this. Ushi still hasn't registered Robin's question, but she still plays everything down, because that's what she always does.

"It looks worse than it is. I'm fine. Are you two girls okay?"

Usually the two of them are attached at the hip, though there are times when Robin comes here alone. Ushi prays that this is one of them.
