my dear siblings in arms last night we gained an unlikely but welcome ally for the mitch marner defense squad
he showed up in a cloud of mist then leapt into hand-in-hand combat vs. the leafs uncles who want to do a variety of things to mitch, ranging from cyberbullying him out of town to "healthy scratch[ing] him for 2 months so he wants to leave" (an actual idea someone thought to post publicly).
without further ado, i present: [cue gladiator soundtrack] Jfresh.

some additional observations:
if u look at the timestamps for these he was fully in the trenches battling from 3pm-1am.
his calm replies make the uncles look even more obtusely deranged than they already are
he may be doing this with the ulterior motive of trying to get mitch on the penguins and honestly....let's fuckin go

Just watched the marleau interview. Why am i just discovering this now??? Also why am i crying so hard??? The way mitch was genuinely surprised and looked like he was going to cry oh my baby
YES. It’s the way Mitch has no expectations of anyone ever saying nice things about him. It’s the way Marleau’s voice gets so quiet and gentle, like he knows he might spook Mitch off just by saying something. It’s the way both of them get tears in their eyes. God it breaks my heart every single time.

I'm not even a Leafs fan (or a Marner girlie! I like him fine but he isn't one of my main little guys!) but I've noticed how he's been treated by the fanbase, the media, the coaches (looking at you Babcock) for years and been absolutely appalled by it. I do think there's a strong element of misogyny underlying it all (and probably some homophobia), you're right and you should say it and I want to read that essay.
it's honestly ridiculous, and it's the same criticism that gets aimed at any hockey player who is smaller than average, except it's magnified due to it being the leafs and being toronto. he's always been treated this way, like people try to rewrite history and say they were fine with him before the contract but it's not true. babcock didn't even WANT HIM DRAFTED, but thankfully he wasn't the one making those decisions.
it got worse after the contract, but my thing is always that people don't realise where he was at at that time. he was still a rookie, under team control, and facing down years of being coached by babcock. babcock's contract only expired at the start of THIS SEASON. which means a young mitch was facing seeing a large portion of his career being coached by a man who didn't like him, wouldn't put him and auston on the same line, would take any opportunity to humiliate players he thought weren't good enough, like... I would've held out for the money as well.
the language people use for mitch is absolutely coached in homophobia as well, which comes all the way back to misogyny, because the worst thing these men who hate him can think of is being perceived as feminine. as weak. as less than a man in all the stereotypical ways. they'll throw homophobic comments at auston and willy as well, but they don't go full tilt misogyny because those two dudes are bigger, not as smiley, and they don't see them as being weak in the same way they see mitch. (which is wild because auston is the softest man in the world (affectionate))
these men see mitch as being weak, small, and too soft. they don't see the kid who fought his way to playing professional hockey despite being told at every turn he was too small. they don't see the kid with the lifelong passion for the leafs. the kid who always wanted to wear the logo on his chest and still wants that more than anything DESPITE all the criticism and hatred he faces. they don't see the kid who had to tell his dad to stop talking to him about hockey because he knew he'd never be good enough for him. they don't see that mitch is, actually, one of the strongest hockey players in the nhl for all he's been through to get to where he is.
they like to blame the contract and how much he's being paid, but that's an excuse. they hate him for not playing into the stereotype of a hockey player, despite being an ontario boy through and through. they hate him for being him, and staying faithful to who he is despite everything that has been thrown at him.
it would've been so easy for mitch to give in and become the person they all want him to be, but he didn't. he stayed true to himself and his kind and loving nature, and the fact that so many people don't appreciate that and would rather smear him, says more about them than it does about him.

I think I wouldn't even care so much if the way people criticized Mitch wasn't always so strangely personal and almost demeaning? Fine, if it's actual criticism of his on-ice play but he gets psycho-analyzed in a way I've never seen before, and the terms that get thrown against him are almost misogynistic in nature? He's a whiny princess, a bitch, spoilt when he shows emotion and frustration- because you need show emotion, you need to show you care but apparently, not like that. If you're Nathan MacKinnon you can yell at officials and teammates and break a hundred sticks, and that's all alright because MacKinnon plays hockey the right way. The masculine way. He's not a bitch, not like Marner, who they dearly wish they could call a slur probably
It's actual criticism of his on-ice play but it's always splicing it when you point out no, actually, Mitch leads the team in playoff points, no, actually, Mitch got the game-winner on the only game this team has won in the second round in twenty years, no, actually, he was not the one who should have been covering Pastrnak on that goal and you just think he shouldve been because he noticed no one was there, etc etc etc. Like I have a popular post going around Right Now about mitch not being able to grow a playoff beard but people look at that -- they look at him -- and see weakness, femininity, a myriad of traits to be demonized and done with !! It's sickening !! It is sick !!

Just hoping mitch gets a hug tonight. Seeing all the morons on twitter bash him is rough 💕
(On a somewhat selfish note one of the morons suggested trading him to the pens. While I disagree about trading him, the idea of a new Resident Baby Sunshine on sid or geno's line with kyle behind the scene is tempting 👀)
I’ll be honest I am a “get Mitchy out of Toronto” truther. I think the team and the majority of the fans will never like him or support him, and it’s painful watching him give everything to his hometown team only for them to shit on him year after year.
My hot take is he would thrive in Florida. Paul Maurice seems like the exact kind of supportive coach he needs, he’d be reunited with his friend Matthew, and their whole culture seems so fun and happy and team oriented in a way that just suits him imo.
Barring that, as a kraken fan I would LOVE if we found a way to acquire him this offseason. We are in desperate need of a playmaker & scorer like him, a consistent point per game guy you can count on defensively and offensively night after night. We would love him sooooo much!
And yes, Pittsburgh would also be an incredible choice. He’d get to wing for Sid, he’d get to make a huge difference in that team, and I can’t imagine he’d hurt the power play. Acquiring him seems like it would actually do all the things the Reilly Smith acquisition was supposed to do.
But wherever he goes, he needs to get out. I know he has Stockholm syndrome, and he’s been broken down enough by Toronto media to think nowhere could love him as much as Toronto, but they don’t love him there. He NEEDS to leave to find happiness.

I subscribe very heavily to the idea that mitch's stockholm syndrome/intense anxiety during playoffs (which causes him to make some mistakes that leafs fans just tear into him for) are all related back to mitch's really intense total asshole of a father paul marner. He really takes the "im living vicariously through my son" to a whole new level.
Does mitch need to leave? (As much as it pains me to break up 1634) I think he does. But I think he cant see that, for all the reasons mentioned above.
But just think of him turning up at PPG arena, suitcase in hand, and reading the sign out front that says "the sidney crosby home for wayward orphan children"
Yeah breaking up Mitchy and Auston would be painful. But like… hasn’t the boy suffered enough.
And yes you’re so right his dad seems full on psycho. No doubt in my mind that that whole fucked up relationship has a huge impact on the way he deals with stress and pressure and the need to perform and the perception that he’s not meeting expectations.
He needs to play in a place where the things he IS contributing are recognized and appreciated. Because he absolutely is doing a lot for Toronto in this series. The whole team has Boston ptsd and came out from the beginning like there was no way they could possibly win. I’m not sure why all of that is Mitchy’s fault?? But it’s so tough to see all the media and comments blaming him when I feel like he’s one of the few guys not playing like he’s already been eliminated.

becoming a leafs fan has been crazy purely through witnessing the shit that gets said about mitch and how he’s torn to pieces esp with the LTIR news. like it was made clear that he probs wouldnt be back before 10 games but the replied to tweets about it are so vile not to mention everyone tearing him apart over his media appearance in the past 2 days. like why does everyone rip him to shreds?
