Final project for Introductory Cut and Construction. This is an 1810 Regency green velvet Spencer Jacket with a green satin lining, a hook and eye fastening down the right hand side, and a ribbon tie is used to hold the inside of the jacket.
History of the Spencer jacket - Regency era:
The spencer jacket was originally a men's garment and was used to keep women warm after the muslin flue started. The men’s spencer jacket was long with a tail at the back, the women adapted this jacket to fit there high waistline, hence why the jacket was so short, when the waistline on the chemise dropped so did the spencer jacket. The military style of the jacket was influenced by the war, as was the men’s. A spencer jacket was worn both indoors, outdoors and for evening wear, it stayed in fashion for around 20 years.
