Those Useless Trees — The Valley Oak
Tumblr media
A couple of days ago my friend Mike and I decided to go for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park. Having celebrated a friend’s birthday the previous night into the following morning, a good moderately strenuous ramble seemed like just the thing. We were both awed by the park’s stunning vistas as well as its many magnificent valley oak trees, the largest oak species in North America and a species found only in California.
Tumblr media
Inside the Malibu Creek State Park
The 3,324-hectare park, although opened to the public in 1976, of course, has a much older history. The first humans to arrive in the area where likely the Chumash, who established the village of Talepop (or Ta’lopop) within what’s now the park. About 3,500 years ago — thousands of years after the Chumash settled the area — the Tongva arrived from the east and the Malibu Creek, which drains the Santa Monica Mountains, became a sort of border between the two nations. Downstream the river flows into the Pacific Ocean at an estuary the Chumash referred to as “U-mali-wu,” meaning “it makes a loud noise there.” The Spanish, who arrived in the 16th century, recorded the name as Malibu.
Tumblr media
Languedoc?
Although neither Mike nor I had ever been to the park before, we’d both seen it in many films and television series. The striking Goat Buttes, in particular, have served as a popular setting in Hollywood fictions. Before reading a sign informing us that the outcroppings were in the series, M*A*S*H, I was reminded by the chaparral-covered prominences of a childhood summer spent in Languedoc. After learning that the semi-arid oak landscape had been used to evoke green, temperate Korea for eleven seasons of the long-running Korean War comedy, I was struck by how unlike the scenery reminded me of any I’d seen in Korea, which I visited last summer. Of course, come to think of it, the cast of that show’s hairstyles seemed suspiciously ’70s for a war which took place from 1950-1953.
Tumblr media
Coast live oaks on a hill
The valley in which we stood was carpeted with brittle, yellow grasses and scruffy oak trees. Most of the oaks in the oak savanna were coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), also known as California live oak, those familiar oaks which during the rainy season fleetingly give the landscape of rolling hills on which they often grow the appearance of the Shire. Elsewhere in the park, there are stately sycamores and the southernmost grove of redwoods. There are, naturally, many varieties of native fungi and fauna as well, and during our visit, we observed a small herd of mule deer, various lizards, a covey of quail, a couple of rabbits, a California tarantula, a gracefully gliding heron, a red-tailed hawk, a flock of pigeons, and several other birds which I didn’t recognize.
Tumblr media
Some of the oaks obviously unlike the others. They were taller, their silhouettes patchier, their branches droopier than the dome-like coast live oaks, the canopies of which spread out like gauzy green umbrellas over the gently rolling hills. As a child growing up in Missouri’s Little Dixie, I roamed the forests and knew my red cedars from my red maples, my black walnuts from my bladdernuts, my corkwoods from my dogwoods, my pawpaws from my possumhaws. I don’t remember learning most of their names and characteristics, though, and because of that, I hoped — however unrealistically — that I’d over time somehow simply absorb a similar knowledge Southern California’s trees. Having now lived in Southern California longer than anywhere else, I have unfortunately found that I have to make an effort to learn them.
I observed the oaks that were not coast live oaks. Whereas the leaves of the coast live oak are small, shiny, prickly, and look a bit like those of a holly shrub, the leaves of these oaks were lobed and looked almost leathery, faintly fuzzy. The leaves were clustered rather than spread across the branches’ tips. The bark was sort of silvery brown and almost uniformly wrinkled whereas the trunks and branches of the coast live oaks appear contorted and gnarled. It was clear that these were not coast live oaks — but I was no closer to identifying them than I had been when Mike had asked me what they were and so I turned to PlantSnap, an app which has, since downloading, successfully identified about 30% of the plants I’ve used it to recognize. It also identifies fungi — but with a track record like that, I wouldn’t use it for foraging unless I was completely OK with a painful death. This time the app proved successful, however, notifying me that the tree was most likely a Quercus agrifolia, or valley oak (it was) or, perhaps, a staghorn fern or loquat (it was obviously not). Valley oaks are also known as robles, as in Paso Robles.
Tumblr media
I was struck by the appearance of the valley oaks acorns, which were considerably longer than those I was accustomed to. They provide food for, among other animals, acorn woodpeckers, California ground squirrels, California scrub jays, and yellow-billed magpies. Historically, they were also an important food source for the Chumash, who never developed agriculture as they were able to live comfortably off of what they foraged and hunted.
Tumblr media
Mule deer eating valley oak leaves
The woody parts of the valley oak support California gall wasp, red cone gall wasp, and Chionodes petalumensis. As we approached a beckoning oak woodland, we stopped to watch a large family of mule deer, one of whose members spent a great deal of time standing on his hind legs and helping himself to the leaves of a large tree.
The roots of the valley oak have intimate symbiotic associations with many of the region’s mycorrhizal fungi which are essential to their survival — and one of the main reasons Southern California should favor the planting of native trees over imports like the pepper trees, goldenrains, jacarandas, bottle brushes, &c which, although drought tolerant, are simply incapable of slotting into an ecosystem which evolved over millions of years without them.
The valley oak is endemic to California, where its range stretches along the valleys and foothills of San Diego County in the south to Sikiyou County in the north. They live to be up to 600 years, which means that the oldest trees were alive during the fall of Constantinople, the invention of the printing press, the domination of Central Asia by Tamerlane’s Timurid Empire, and closer to home, the rise of the Inca and Aztec empires.
Until it fell on 1 May 1977, the tallest valley oak was the so-called “Hooker Oak,” which stood until then in Chico. Because its trunk had a massive diameter of 8.8 meters, its age was at the time estimated to be over 1,000 years old. However, once dead it was determined that the tree owed its girth to the fact that it was in fact two specimens, both of roughly 325 years of age, which had long ago grown together into one. It appeared in many films where it proved a natural in its many roles as a tree.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), co-starring the Hooker Oak
The current tallest valley oak is the so-called “Henley Oak,” a specimen which towers 47 meters above the floor of the Round Valley in Covelo. It is named after Thomas J. Henley, a one-time Superintendent of Indian Affairs notable for opening the region to European-American settlers in defiance of a federal order which had promised the land to Native Americans, resulting in a great deal of regrettable bloodshed between indigenous Californians and immigrants. The tree is believed to be more than 500 years old, meaning it sprouted from an acorn and was possibly producing its own well before the first Spanish galleon, San Salvador, sailed along the coast.
Tumblr media
The Henley Oak (source unknown)
Mike and I turned back after reaching Rock Pool, and again we crossed the valley featured in M*A*S*H. This time, surprisingly, I did find myself somewhat reminded of Korea — or at least of Korean (and Chinese) landscape painting. By this time, the sun had set and the gold hour was transitioning to blue. The oak woodland seemed to be climbing up the base of the improbably steep sandstone hillsides. Tipping the scales of perception, perhaps, was the presence of a Korean family attempting to take photos of a toddler with the scenery as a backdrop.
Tumblr media
Korean landscape painting? Oak woodland at the base of low mountains
I sometimes have a physical sensation of being pulled into the woods and the longer I looked at the trees, the stronger the pull seemed to grow. I had to fight the urge to enter the forest because the park had officially closed the moment the sun sank behind the horizon and currently, there is no overnight camping because in June, 35-year-old Tristan Beaudette was shot to death in the tent he was sharing with his two young daughters. Since then, rumors and other reports of gunfire in the park have emerged both following the murder and stretching back to 2016 and there’s an ongoing investigation.
Tumblr media
Vacant campsite under a canopy of oak trees)
Hopefully, the murderous gunman will be caught and peace and campers will again return to the park. It looks like a really wonderful place to pitch a tent for a weekend, perhaps do a bit of forest bathing, or even just contemplate the scenery. As we continued toward the exit, the crescent moon (which had hung in the sky throughout our day) was now shining brightly and bats were flitting about in search of a meal. We hurried our pace and left the park without incident.

Jazzy midcentury modern by Covina Bowl architects asking $1.5M in Long Beach
While the midcentury architecture firm of Powers, Daly, and DeRosa is best known as the team behind such fantastic Googie-style bowling centers as the Egyptian-themed Covina Bowl, the Long Beach firm also designed single-family residences, including this fun family abode at 1062 Tehachapi Drive in Bixby Knolls that just hit the market.
Completed in 1954, the single-story home presents a fairly buttoned-down exterior to passersby, though its cascading paved walkway and stylized-block screen offer a hint to its more playful nature.
Things loosen up considerably inside the house, which follows a U-shaped plan with three bedrooms and two baths at one end and a guest bedroom or office and bath on the other.
Along with glass walls, cork and flagstone floors, mahogany paneling, built-in furniture, and two fireplaces, the 2,569-square-foot home’s notable features include a fiddle leaf fig tree growing from a planter built into the living room floor and a rock fountain and koi pond that extends from the living room outside to the patio.
The grounds also contain a solar-heated swimming pool, an outdoor shower, and an above-ground hot tub.
Per the description, recent updates include high efficiency zoned HVAC units, new plumbing, new electrical systems, new roofing, and owned solar panels. On an 11,363-square-foot lot, the property is listed with Nate Cole of Coldwell Banker at an asking price of $1.499 million.
Open houses are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Steel Frame of Wilshire Boulevard Temple Expansion Takes Shape
After breaking ground last November, the steel frame of the $75-million Audrey Irmas Pavilion has quickly taken shape in Koreatown.
Located at the corner of Wilshire and Harvard Boulevard, the expansion to the Wilshire Boulevard Temple will house cultural, religious and community events. The three-story, 55,000-square-foot structure will consist of a chapel and terrace, a grand ballroom, a catering kitchen, meeting rooms, performance spaces and a rooftop sky garden.
Architect Rem Koolhaas and his OMA partner, Shohei Shigematsu are designing the pavilion. The modern, trapezoidal building features a west facade that slopes away from the historic temple, which was built in 1929. The building's skin was inspired by the interior of the sanctuary dome.
The project team also includes Gruen Associates, who is serving as executive architect, and Studio MLA, who is serving as the landscape architect.
In addition to hosting religious and cultural activities, the building will also be home to The Annenberg Foundation's initiative for purposeful aging. The pavilion will be open to the entire community with events promoting wellness, social engagement, financial education and more.
The Audrey Irmas Pavilion is expected to be complete by early 2021.

Official: Pipe-bomb suspect had hit list of targets
CURT ANDERSON and MICHAEL BALSAMO Associated Press
Law enforcement officials aren’t sure whether they’ve discovered the last of the pipe bombs mailed to prominent Democrats and other opponents of President Donald Trump. They’ve said the packages were staggered, and more could be somewhere in the U.S. mail system.
What’s more, an official tells The Associated Press that the man suspected of sending the bombs kept a list of elected officials and others who investigators believe were intended targets.
The disclosure of the list came as 56-year-old Cesar Sayoc made his initial court appearance in Miami federal court Monday, and after bomb squads were called to a post office in Atlanta about a suspicious mailing to CNN that was similar to the pipe bomb packages recovered last week.
The official said authorities had recovered soldering equipment, a printer, and stamps similar to those used on the package bombs after arresting Sayoc last week in Florida. Authorities believe he was putting explosives together in his van.
The official also said authorities have been scrutinizing Sayoc’s social media posts. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity to the AP.
The FBI said via its Twitter account that the recovered package in Atlanta was “similar in appearance” to the bubble-wrapped manila envelopes authorities say were sent by Sayoc to intended targets from Delaware to California, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Joe Biden.
CNN President Jeff Zucker says all mail to CNN has been screened offsite since last week, when a series of package bombs began appearing around the country. Among them were two apparent mail bombs sent to CNN.
At least some listed a return address of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former chair of the Democratic National Committee.
She represents the South Florida district where the former male stripper, pizza driver and strip club DJ lived in an old van covered with bumper stickers praising Trump, disparaging Democrats and CNN, and showing rifle crosshairs over liberals including Clinton, commentator Van Jones and filmmaker Michael Moore.
Sayoc was arrested Friday outside a South Florida auto parts store after investigators said they identified him through fingerprint and DNA evidence. He faces more than 50 years in prison if convicted on all charges. None of the bombs exploded and no one was injured.
At Monday’s hearing, federal prosecutors said they will seek to keep Sayoc jailed until trial as a flight risk and a danger to the community. A judge set another hearing for Friday on whether to grant bail to Sayoc and to discuss when he will be sent from Miami to New York, where five federal charges were filed.
Shackled at the wrists and ankles in a tan jail jumpsuit, Sayoc became weepy at one point, but said little at the hearing.
Defense attorney Daniel Aaronson urged people not to rush to judgment.
“Right now, we know very, very, very little,” Aaronson said. “We do not know all the evidence the government has. You have to keep in mind he has not been found guilty of anything.”
The FBI said it believes the package intended for CNN headquarters in Atlanta that was discovered Monday is similar to those that Sayoc is accused of sending. Law enforcement officials have said they believe the packages were staggered and more could be discovered.
The New York Times said in a staff memo that it was notified by the FBI on Monday that one of its editors was on a list of potential targets of the mail-bomb suspect. Later that day, an envelope addressed to the editor raised concerns, but New York police determined that it was a false alarm. The editor was not identified.

Balsamo reported from Washington.

Rondo doing cardio in recovery from surgery
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Rajon Rondo says he has been doing cardio on the basketball court as he recovers from surgery to repair his fractured right third metacarpal.
Talking to reporters for the first time since suffering the injury on Nov. 14 and undergoing surgery the following day, Rondo was in good spirits and discussed what he's been cleared to do.
"Still able to do a little bit of cardio," said the veteran point guard, who is averaging 8.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds. "I just got back on the court as far as, [the doctor] allowed me to sweat a little bit more. But I still can't do anything upper [body] yet. But I can run and use my legs."
Rondo later added: "It is all about perspective. It's not that bad an injury as far as being out 12-13 months... [four to five] weeks is nothing compared to what I've been through. Young [or] old, if you have an injury in particular like an ACL [it would be worse]... [This] will be alright."
After the surgery, the Lakers said Rondo was expected to miss four to five weeks. However, Rondo has refused to let the shooting-hand injury stop him from continuing to be involved. He has been active as almost a player-coach, joining the coaches' huddle before timeouts during the Lakers' win in Miami last Sunday and tossing left-handed passes to Michael Beasley while keeping his right hand in a splint in his jacket pocket during pregame warm-ups in Cleveland on Wednesday.
On Friday morning, Rondo spoke to reporters with his right hand uncovered but explained that he didn't do anything in shootaround other than give his teammates moral support.
"Just the same," Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma said of what he's seen from Rondo post-surgery. "He's just not on the court. He's always in the film room, always talking to people, always has something to say about whatever the other team is doing and he's always willing to lend a hand out there."

In Chinatown, couple plans to convert office building to brewery
In Chinatown, couple plans to convert office building to brewery
Architects Orange is designing the new spot at 15k sf property
1201 North Main Street (Credit: Loopnet)
In the latest sign of gentrification in Chinatown, an office building could soon manufacture and sell beer instead.
The owners of a 15,000-square-foot property at 1201 North Main Street have requested to convert the building into a brewery, according to documents published Tuesday.
The property is currently being used as flex office space with rental rates asking about $35 per square foot per year. It’s found near the L.A. State Historic Park, and a few blocks from Metro’s Chinatown station.
Married couple Alise and Rudolph Cicatelli bought the property for an undisclosed amount in 1988, property records show.
Details regarding plans for the brewery remain scant. Architects Orange, based in Orange County, is designing the project, and filed the application on behalf of the owners.
Chinatown has become a hotbed for development in recent years. Late last month, Atlas Capital Group secured approvals from the Planning Commission to build a 725-unit project dubbed College Station. The dense project had been in the pipeline for several years, and drew concerns among locals fearing gentrification in the neighborhood.
Much of the recent development has been fueled by a pro-development rezoning, passed in 2013. The Cornfield Arroyo Seco Specific Plan set guidelines for developing the 660 acres straddling Chinatown and Lincoln Heights, making it easier for developers to secure approvals in those largely undeveloped areas.

One positive, three negatives from Kings' 101-86 loss to Lakers
One positive, three negatives from Kings' 101-86 loss to Lakers originally appeared on nbcsportsbayarea.com
It wasn't pretty. Not at all. The Kings couldn't hit a shot on their home court. They looked taxed mentally and in the end, the fell to the Los Angeles Lakers by a final of 101-86 on Saturday night.
De'Aaron Fox continued his breakout sophomore season, but there wasn't a whole lot else to like as the Kings stumbled in front of their home crowd.
Sacramento currently stand at 7-6 on the season after the loss to LA.
Here is one positives and three negatives from the game.
POSITIVES
Swipa The Snipa
Coming into the league, there was concerns about Fox's ability to shoot from the perimeter. He's done a nice job of quieting those conversations early in Year Two.
Against the Lakers, Fox attacked the rim on multiple occasions, but his shooting from long range kept the Kings in the game during the first half.
Fox knocked down 3-of-6 from deep and is now shooting 41 percent from 3-point range on the season. He shot with confidence and was one of the few Kings players to put the ball in the bucket.
On the evening, Fox scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebound in the loss. This was the seventh time this season that Fox has cracked the 20-point plateau. He managed the feet just five times in 73 games as a rookie.
NEGATIVES
Dribble, Dribble, Dribble
When the Kings are at their best, they move the ball all over the court and find the open man. That is not the style of basketball they played against the Lakers.
The Kings over dribbled and tried to play hero ball all evening. The results showed up in the box score. Not only did the Kings' offense come to a complete standstill, but they finished the night with just 11 assists and 19 turnovers.
The ball got sticky and it cost the team any chance of coming away with a win. The issue looks like an anomaly. Sacramento came into the night third in the league in assists per game at 25.5.
Either the Lakers figured out some magic pill to stop the Kings' ball movement or the home team had a rare bad night on the offensive end.
Bricks
The Kings haven't had any issue putting the ball through the hoop this season, until Saturday evening at Golden 1 Center. Coach Dave Joerger pointed to mental fatigue following the game and he's likely on to something.
Against a sub-par defensive team, Sacramento's ball movement came to a standstill. They forced shots, over dribbled and turned the ball over.
On the evening, the Kings shot just 34.8 percent from the field and 24 percent from long range. They turned the ball over 19 times and scored a season-low 86 points.
This wasn't the brand of basketball that the Kings have played through the first few weeks of the regular season.
Cold night
Buddy Hield has been played extremely well to start the season, but he struggled against the Lakers. He managed to post 12 points and added four rebounds in 25 minutes of action, but he struggled to hit a shot.
Known for his ability to knock down a shot, Hield hit just 3-of-17 from the field against LA. The Lakers' length on the perimeter appeared to bother the Kings' leading scorer.
Even when Hield found open looks from the perimeter, they clanged iron. Hield came into the game a 45.5 percent shooter from behind the arc, but hit just 1-of-6 from 3-point range in the loss.

Bridal trends: 5 international labels with a rock style
Of the trends observed in recent bridal fashion weeks for the new season, lace wedding dresses are all the rage. Refined items made with georgette or guipure lace are combined with other fabrics such as silk crepe, organza and tulle. Sometimes, spectacular floral embroidery is added or frills, belts, lace, jackets, capes and numerous other casual details for a bride. Here are five international brands that draw their inspiration from a contemporary rock spirit:
Maison Rime Arodaky
Rime Arodaky evokes to perfection the style and look of a bride which incarnates the indefinable Parisian quality of “je ne sais quoi”. Created by Sonia Rykiel, Rime Arodaky uses icons from history with a breath of aesthetics that is natural, rock and timeless. All its models are custom designed in its Paris workshop and last year the designer opened her first showroom in Spain, in Barcelona, to exhibit her latest collection 017 Mystical Love and the iconic models of the label.
Kaviar Gauche
This Berlin-based wedding dress label has in recent years become a favourite of young people. Its creators, Alexandra Fischer-Roehler and Johanna Kühl, use simple and elegant models, with more detailed elements and filigrees embroidered in 3D to create delicate contrasts. These dresses designed for the modern woman are produced with the care and attention given to high fashion items. Although Kaviar Gauche currently only has one store in Germany, its collections are sold on its e-commerce site. The couple recently presented its "Sans Souci" collection in Paris.
Laure de Sagazan
This one is a pretty Made in France label. Elegant, casual and Bohemian, the items produced by Laure de Sagazan have a style that is at once loose and sober - loaded with subtle details. Laure de Sagazan, a fashion design-school graduate, worked at ba&sh before launching her label in 2011. It designs custom dresses in its Paris workshop in the 10th District. Laure de Sagazan has already exhibited in New York and distributed its collections in Miami, Vancouver and San Francisco. At the beginning of the year, the designer signed a capsule collection of wedding dresses with Monoprix, dominated by white and gold as well as elements essential for the big day, such as outfits for children, ceramic stoneware plates and a cushion embroidered with cotton.
Flora
Flora is an Israeli wedding dress label, based in Haifa and founded in 2010. Created by designer Rinat Asher, its items are spectacular and luxurious, combining the classic, contemporary and nobility. The fabric for the dresses is imported mainly from Europe. Lace is used exclusively to maintain uniqueness and originality. The models combine layers of carefully worked fabric with lace and embroidery to create a vintage antique style. Since 2017, the brand has developed outside Israel, and luxury dresses are sold in premium stores worldwide.
Yolancris
This is one of the most prominent Spanish brands and is particularly marked out by a casual rock style. The creations of Yolanda Pérez always bear the imprint of inspiration drawn from music, film and literature that “liberates the woman” allowing her to rediscover herself. Yolancris makes clothes for all women, including wedding dresses that are ribbed, mini and sexy to be worn with thigh boots, as well as long dresses with lace and organza. Her most recent collection of wedding dresses, presented at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, is influenced by the concept of liberty evoked through experimentation, individuality and difference.
